In Svitzerland we say “Ohrwurm “ for this kind of Song. It is catchy- You hear it once and you can’t get it out of your brain. The repetitive 🔁without ↗️↘️ makes it easier to hum along . And voilà- it is in your brain for a long time. Since I like Taemin's voice, it's not a problem 🙂

I was waiting for your reaction to this sooooo much! I feel the moment between the classic (piano bit) and the "hip hop" section mix very well in it and made it harmonic, which is not very common in kpop these days, and as much as it's surprising to hear taemin do these kinds of things, it's also refreshing AND relaxing at the same time, while the rap part and the dance put an aggressive tone on it, I LOVE the contrast sooo much and it might be the song of the year for me!

Hey there! So I'm a dance choreographer and analyst and I 100% understand what you guys were saying about how the track doesn't quite have any "stand out" moments, but when I recently took a look at the choreography in isolation and analyzed it, the format and sequences of the choreographic structure of the formations and dynamics within the content, was VERY well done.. Honestly some of the best I've personally seen from Taemin's choreography portfolio.

I've been waiting for this, particularly the piano reaction because it kept sounding SO SIMILAR to something and I couldn't place it. The closest I got was Mozart's K.310 sonata in A Minor, 3rd movement... I feel validated that Sean said the piano passage was similar to around 1800 at least

Yeah, I think music-wise, the song is pretty constant but what makes me like it so much is because it gives Taemin a big chance to put his personality in his voice and intonation. I think it what drives to song forward

I think taemin is what makes this song so special. The beat itself doesn't change too much to emphasize taemin constantly change tone, registers and flow. It shows how he's really come along way from someone who was relatively quite at debut to someone who can carry a song on his own

I totally understand what Sean was saying about repeated progressions. Classical musicians have a lower tolerance for them, because they've heard them before, but somehow the repetition didn't bother me at all in this song. I guess there was enough difference in timbre, rhythm, melody, and choreography each time that I didn't get bored. And Taemin in cool outfits. But I could listen to this just with the audio and still like it. There actually is a bit of variation each time with the ending of the progression - sometimes the last V chord isn't there or is delayed. Note: In the review of this video with Taemin and Minho, Minho also says the post chorus sounds like a duck.

you put it in a good way. I can relate to often wanting more from a song (and I think I could like this song more if it showed more varation). But something with this song when I do listen to it I’m not complaining I’m really enjoying and living in it. Not a musician but I didn’t know why this song for being so repetitive is so special other than the fact that it just fits my usual type of craving as I enjoy intense songs that fill you up with emotion.

I think the repeated progression emphasizes the atmosphere of feeling trapped/an oppressive environment, and the slight variation are kind of like attempts to escape or a struggle to emerge as an individual, to get out of this oppressive and limiting box represented by the repeated pattern

Must be tough for Taemin to outdo his previous gems on every comeback. I got a big shock hearing it first time in his Beyond concert. Didn't like it much. After watching the MV though, I understand the style he's going for and the song grew on me after every listen. The piano part is the one that draws me in mostly. Very brave and bold of him to choose this song as the title track. It's very different from his previous works.

i was surprised you react to this since the song doesn't change much but a lot of what makes this enjoyable for me is: 1. an unexpected genre for taemin 2. the vocalisation 2b. the pitched doubling 2c. rhythm stuff (like vocal rhythm and bass/percussion, taemin's been dabbling in trap beats more since black rose and im intrigued by his take on current pop tropes) 3. performance and even though i don't agree with Sean's comments (for my ears the piano progression is one of my fav things about the song), it makes total sense to me from the perspective of his ears

Think Taemin himself is the element that makes it special. 😊 Like if it'll be performed by others we'd actually see how ordinary the song is, but because it was Taemin it felt different, artistic, and special.

Although this syncopation is repeated again and again through out the whole song, I'm so obsessed with it and find it so beautiful as a melody, that I don't really mind it's repetitiveness! But in the end, I think Taemin is the one that elevates his songs the best.

Yeah I absolutely agree with both Umu and Sean this time. There isn't anything that stands out in the song like Sean said, especially compared to the other kinds of songs they react to. But like Umu said, I'm not a classical musician and the piano bit is super cool to me. I'm also SUPER addicted to the song lol. Great review! Love you guys♡♡

Maybe the chords and tonality don't vary overmuch because mentally when you can't take advice of people around you or even your own, you are incapable of breaking out of the death circle of the situation you're in? I have a feeling that it was done on purpose.

Ha! I agree with you. Everything Taemin does has a purpose. The same way that each clips or scenes were handpicked by him to complement the lyrics and show the story he was trying to tell through the MV. And the fact that he said Advice is actually connected to Criminal and IDEA calls for a much deeper analysis of what the song is about.

This song and the entire series is utterly brilliant. Yes they are decently simple songs but not when you combine the song, choreo, storyline, and arc of it all. He's telling a story and if each piece was too complex the story would be lost. He's figured out who he is, where his strengths are and he's combined them beautifully. To have that accomplished at such a young age is actually extraordinary.

I love kpop but I often find it pretty one dimensional. Taemin is anything but. And my favourite thing about him is that he is both a genius artist... AND a child. Which I suppose is often the same thing.

That sounded derogatory, but I mean that when he's not performing or in professional mode, he's got this beautiful exuberance about him. He's used to being the baby and he reverts back into that sort of carefree headspace pretty easily so his personality is an interesting dichotomy.

Taemin always has a specific sound that makes his songs unique while also doing something new and innovative. Seriously no one is doing it like him in terms of his performances, great vocals, and having absolute bops.

I think the beauty of taemins songs is that the song could be basic and his vocals just takes it to the next level. To be honest I’m so glad that is was such simple progression because he had so much vocal range (those chords in the chorus omg) and creativity with syncopation, dynamics and especially with his rap.

I was hoping you reacted to this song. The first time I listened to this I thought it was weird but somehow Taemin pulled it off. Now I can see it has a lot mainstream elements. Anyway I love it and Taemin's performance is as always crazy good. The MV is art.

I love everything about this song. Advice sounds so weird to my ears but in a good way. I don’t really like repetitive “anything” but surprisingly I didn’t even noticed it here. For me, what elevated this song and made it addictive is the piano melody, which I love, and Taemin’s tone and vocal delivery. MV storyline, the styling, visuals and effects, lyrics, the background vocal, and choreography are, as per Taemin’s usual, superb!

The classical piano reminds me so much of Beethovens Moonlight Sonata. It has a similar "melody" and a just like a harmonic twist to it. Am I the only one haha? 😂

now that i'm used to the song i understand their point of view but when i first heard it i literally cried. something about that progression and the way those sounds were floating in the background through the entire thing just got to me. i then also proceeded watching the mv like 30 times in a row so there's probably something off with my brain but there is something about this song too

I love this song so much 😭 my favorite thing about Taemin’s music is half to the most of the time, his music sounds almost dark eerie and sinister yet elegant and airy, and that’s what makes it addicting. The song is literally engulfing you by pulling you in different directions, it kills me🧍🏽‍♀️

I was WAITING to see you guys react to Advice🥺 I was thinking is the piano from Corpse Bride like the main theme of the movie? Because it sounded similar to it almost if they sped up the movie's main theme. I don't know I may be wrong but the piano is super familiar 😅

With all due respect, as a fellow formally trained and educated musician, I think your guest here is really missing the joy of this piece. I understand you are musicians so your focus is going to be on the music, and he clearly has his own area of expertise, but there is a lot more going on here than just a chord progression and melody. I think it's a shame there's no apparent weight given to the lyrics, the production, the visuals, the dancing, the persona/performance, etc when it comes to assessing this. I have no problem with people disliking things I like and backing it up with interesting and coherent critique, but this honestly felt lazy on the guest's part. It didn't even seem like he wished to be there. As a viewer, coming to a "reaction" video, my honest critique is you might want to think of inviting guests who are more dynamic and engaging to your viewers, regardless of whether their reaction is positive or negative. Not doubting or criticizing his talent- he's clearly a very skilled musician with extensive theoretical and historical music knowledge. But that doesn't automatically mean someone makes for enjoyable or engaging watching.

I love how Taemin involves Piano in his performances & albums. I enjoy listening to both classical and pop and seeing my favorite artist combining both is just so treat for the eyes and ears.

I love Taemin, I love Advice, but for string instrumentation, you should check out H.O.T. - Outside Castle. It released on 2000, They are the founder of K-idol era, and the leader made the song himself.

I like the intro piano where the chords change per beat and then in the 3rd bar they add the syncopation (also noting they went to the relative major of the key) to change the feeling and then back again to a chord per beat. (Settling down again to the minor key). High praise to the producers❤️❤️❤️❤️
