Say what you want about Phil Collins but the man collected and amassed a huge and priceless collection of Alamo memorabilia and rare historical artifacts which he freely donated to the Alamo museum in San Antonio Texas. For this gesture and his devotion and interest in Texas history, Native Texans salute him and concider him a true Honorary Texan 🤠👍!!!!
@@V3lv3n It's a Texan thing.....(You wouldn't understand, Soyboy). Too bad you don't take pride in where you were born, which probably extends to how you feel about being an American as well)....Is that true? P.S...The Battle of the Alamo was fought for the independence of Texas from Mexico....LONG before the Civil War. Get your facts straight...Get an education you Moron 😝😂🤣!!!
@@kristinadospoy7347 he may be a jerk, but Floyd seemed to do well while he was there - but his horrible treatment (and slander) of Barrett is unforgivable
From Goldberg's Serving the Servant: For all his mixed feelings about awards shows, there were a couple of artists there whom Kurt was excited to meet. When he saw Peter Gabriel walking in, Kurt actually went up to him and introduced himself - something I'd never seen him do. Kurt walked back in my direction and told me with boyish enthusiasm, "He said such nice things about our band."
Kurt Cobain and Noel Gallagher have zero business criticizing Phil Collins, as Collins is of a different musical generation. Different styles, different eras. People need to learn to stay in their lane.
Roger Waters....Noel Gallagher....Curt Cobain....Jimmy (the sloppiest guitarist to ever play) Page?? THESE people hate Phil Collins??? Why, because he was encouraged by Hugh Padgham to release Face Value, music that Phil never really had a plan for. Or because hes one of the finest Prog Rock drummers to ever sit on a drum throne?? Because he had great success, even though he's stated on numerous occasions that when he started drumming he figured he'd be playing Big Band music in small clubs for a living. Ask Leland Sklar what HE thinks of Phil Collins...."hate" will never come into the conversation. However, "he's one of the most talented people Ive ever met, and I love the guy" WILL be mentioned for sure....and Leland has played on a couple thousand albums, so he's been involved with talent (or people who were quite full of themselves, but not necessarily talented).
@@Maesterful I think someone like you who revels in the downfall of someone for no reason other than being hateful makes you a piece of sh1t.. that's what I think
still hear more Nirvana on the radio than Phil or Genesis. Cobain's been dead 30 years too so Phil's had half a lifetime opportunity to get ahead more than him but hasn't managed it
yaboidustin2447 Before Peter Gabriel left Genesis Collins was an excellent drummer. On albums like Nursery Crimes. I forgive him for cashing in. And boy did he ever cash in.
Phil Collins was a drummer for the band BrandX on the Album Marocan Roll. Those who say he's not a good drummer or something like that 🙄🤔 better listen the Album. Maybe indeed after listening, you'll understand why people say he's faking being a popstar. It's a musical Genius.
@@timcoakley5678He never did. It was always David Gilmour who made Floyd listenable. Waters was a shit singer, a shit bassist, and all his shit lyrics can be summed up in only three words: "The World Sucks!"
@@anthonyfarshaw8619 Meh, I'd give Roger a whole lot of credit for his concepts and his lyrics -- but HE needs to give credit to his bandmates and their contributions to Floyd.
@@anthonyfarshaw8619 When Syd first led the group, his lyrics were abstract yet had meaning. He looked at the lighter, child like side of life; that was his perspective on how life was.
Still one of the best drummers ever. John Wetton said he was the best he'd ever played with. Led Zeppelin were terrible at Live Aid and it wasn't Collins' fault. Listen to his duets with Bill Bruford and Chester Thompson or check out Brand X.
Phil is awesome and has lived his live and career to the fullest. He played drums for Brand X. If you don’t know who they are then you really don’t know the most technically and talented band in the world. Percy Sledge the greatest guitar next to Eddie Van Halen. As good as him for sure. Phil is a drumming master. He could also act and write some good music. He lived to retire sitting in a chair as he sang his last performance. He’s an old man now with a great legacy. His music will live till the end of time on earth.
Musicians who got along with Phil 1) David Gilmour (they appeared on the BBC show Pop Quiz in 1981 and David’s team won but Phil respected David after David got a Motown lyric correct and then the two were photographed together at Live Aid and jammed together a few times and David called Phil a decent man and Phil called David a lovely person) 2) Pete Townshend (they got along great and played together countless times) 3) Robert Plant (Phil helped Robert with his solo career)
I'd love to hear Noel "Flash-in-the-pan" Gallagher sing even one Genesis song. Hey, Noel, let's hear you list off your hit singles... lessee... there's Wonderwall... and.. um... wait, didn't they sing "When Soul Meets Body"? No? Death cab for who? ok, well, at least you got wonderwall, there, mate. Now go away for another 30 years...
@@kristinadospoy7347 Google the Gallagher brothers. Yes one sang. The other played. They haven't talked in 15 years. Point is, clean up your own house before you trash someone else's. It's one thing not to like another artists music but to disparage them personally is really unnecessary and just plain cruel.
Phil Collins was a remarkable drummer and an incredible songwriter and singer. Seems as though his peers were jealous of his success. Most of these shots at Collins are pretty childish.
he once came in our coffee shop in Richmond, lovely feller. He had the Lemon drizzle cake and a Coffee, he paid up, sat quietly and made no fuss. Just got on with his snack and read his book. If all our customers were as civilized and well behaved, chance would be a fine thing. An absolute picture in the paddock, he was well turned out in Sky blue shirt, off white cargo pants with semi-elasticated waist and navy blue and white nautical deck shoes and may I say, he had the scent of a true rock legend.
The younger Collins was one helluva drummer with early Genesis. When Gabriel left, Genesis became a pop band and made a ton of money. I can’t hate Phil for that, but Genesis with Gabriel was a much better band.
I have some friend who met Phil in real life in Switzerland and they said he is a very good guy. Very humble, speaking to anybody he met dans la vie de tous les jours.
I don’t like much of his solo music and I don’t like much of the later Genesis music after 1981. I absolutely love his work with early Genesis and Brand X, but as a solo artist he has brought joy to many millions world wide so who that’s a wonderful thing in its self, and his WAS a fantastic drummer.
Phil was a really good and tight drummer. His work with Eno and Brand X were superior. When Genesis let him sing I think it swelled his head... thus the slow descent of his original craft. One must remember, also, Gabrial created the gating and no-symbol drum kit. Sussudio? (excuse me while I puke.) Peace on earth.
A big fan of his music but I kind of lost respect for him the way he just literally dumped the beautiful Dana Tyler ( to go back with his ex- wife) As I understand it Dana was totally blindsided and had to take a few months off to recover - I’m from the New York area and grew up watching her on ABC and CBS news 👍 What A Classy Lady❤
He was actually married two times before he married his third wife Oracene. His first one led to a very bitter divorce and his second solo album "Hello, I must be going" flopped, despite having a couple of good songs like "I Don't Care Anymore" and his rendition of the Supremes "You Can't Hurry Love". He had two children through his first wife. He married his second wife Jill and I think had two more children, which included his actress daughter Lily. They divorced after 11 years. Then he married Oracene and has a son Nicholas, who is also a musician as his dad.
All this cat fighting. Collins is a great songwriter, vocalist & musician. Just because someone doesn't do the same music you do doesn't make them any less. People just need to respect each other's musical style & approach.
I am 67 yrs old and have seen so many artist in concert. I saw Paul Mc Cartney, Oasis and many many more. I also saw Genesis several times and Phil Collins solo. Let me tell you. No one, really no one comes close to Phil Collins in live concerts. This man is phenomenal and very versatile. I don't know Phil Collins personally. And I don't know if the artist mentioned really hate him. I know Noel Gallagher of Oasis once said he hates Phil Collins. I don't know why. But I think that if artists really hate Phil Collins, it's pure jealousy. Jealous of his unprecedented talent, his enormous music skills and his great and long career. And that for a man who has always remained himself and kept his feet on the ground.
I'm a 90s kid and a huge fan of the alternative scene, Kurt Cobain, and Oasis era, but I find it funny that people are obsessed with them. I'm glad Phil Collins was just being quiet.
A lot of jealous mediocre musicians like Kurt Cobain and nazi symphaizer Roger Waters. Collins was a world-class drummer and entertainer. His music has aged well and will endure.
Singer Phil Collins is STILL ALIVE....HE IS 73....singer Kurt Cobain died by SUICIDE IN 1994....therefore, when someone leaves a comment, please make sure your comments are correct & factual....
People can have their own personal tastes, but people who can't see the talent of Phil Collins are clueless. Between 1975 and 2000 the man never stopped writing music. He is an unbelievable drummer and singer. He can sing a ballad as well as anybody and also scream and shout as good as anybody. Good artists don't need to attack under artists.
You can tell Phil Collins didn't want to do something that The people that run the music industry wanted him to do And that's why people are making up stories now Of why they don't like him.... Think about it when the last time you've seen Phil Collins?? ..... You can't black ball Someone that already made you a lot of money and gave you a lot of great music. That's what happens in Hollywood They tell you to do something Weird You don't want to do it and then they blackball you. The only difference is he's not from America. So his music lives on through the rest of the world if you peep the video.
Trey Parker should’ve made this list too. I mean he is an Academy award nominated musician for his song blame Canada on the South Park soundtrack and he has never been shy about expressing how angry he is that he lost to Phil Collins.
Lets see, Kurt, a man so unfortunately miserable he couldn't live with himself and Roger Waters, a man so miserable his band mates couldn't live with him, have low opinions of Phil Collins? I dont hold either opinion in much esteem. Phil, one of the few people to sell 100M albums as a solo act and 100M albums in a band doesn't need their, or my approval. Listen to the drumming on Apocalypse 9/8 or Squonk. Listen to the song writing on I Dont Care or the Tarzan soundtrack. It literally speaks for itself.
I had quite hard times learning "Against all odds" on the piano. Beautiful but complex chords. On the other hand, "Wanderwall" on a guitar was on 2nd take. I prefer the former filling up the space.
You won't find musicians any more overrated and bitter than Cobain and the Gallaghers, and has Roger Waters ever said a kind word about anyone, ever? Page is just pissed off that he fucked up the gig himself, and Collins was a convenient scapegoat. As for McCartney, maybe on this one occasion Phil should have kept his own counsel! Let's face it, Collins has more talent in his big toe than 99% of all the other rock musicians put together. Genesis has been the soundtrack to my life - rock on Phil!
Seen him 5 times from '87 to '07. Never gave a bad performance. And if you're quoting a raging anti-semite, who is universally shunned by everyone he has ever worked with; you may be looking in the wrong places for good judges of character.
I've never had a problem with him, maybe the criticism of how he kicked off "Rock & Roll" was valid as it's one of my pet peeves. The punters should be able to identify the song by the drummer's intro just holding the beat isn't enough. I'm an amateur musician in my seventies and remember the feeling that I got when I first played with a drummer, man what a blast it was wonderful.
I predicted at the time of the 'battle' between oasis and blur that oasis would go away because, although I was not a fan of blur, it was obvious that Damon had original writing talent unlike Liam. Phil was such an icon. A stocky, not so pretty drummer pushed into fronting a band. If not for Phil, all electronic music would sound different. Those iconic 80's drum sounds? I didn't like everything he made but when I think of how many I do, well...
I love Phil Collins, but this video reminds me of the South Park episode where he's made fun of for winning Tarzan the best original song Oscar over South Park Bigger Longer and Uncut
I don't understand Page complaining about any of the drummers there that night.. I saw the performance interestingly today.. Couldn't get to the end listening Plant's problems with his singing.. And that's a member of that band, one that, as they said, rehearsed..
Phil Collins, like him hate him? Awesome with the (Real) Genesis lineup. (Pop) Genesis was okay. Phil Collins solo music towards the end of his career I was not to found of, but it was tolerable. Phil Collins has had a good run and I am sure he is making out well on his roayalties. I only wish that when they had the Final Genesis Tour that Peter Gaberial and Steve Hackett would have joined up with them. Rogers Waters should talk, at least Phil Collins pumps out music, even if it is for Disney. How abut you Roger? Oasis or the Gallagher brothers, they are just nursery rhymes meant to played on teeny booper stations.
If Phil Collins wouldn't rehearse with Led Zep before Live Aid then Page and Plant should have had a replacement lined up and told Collins to take a hike.
Well he did turn a 70s progressive, creative and unique sounding band into a middle of the road, adult orientated, dad music, soft pop band of the 80s. I'm sure he earned a shed load of dosh, so not all bad then.
Phil Collins is one of only three artists to ever sell 100 million albums as a solo artist and part of a group. When you combine his solo work and work with Genesis, he had 51 US top 40 hits and eight number one hits (seven solo US number ones and Invisible Touch being Genesis’ only US number one hit).
Genesis were incredible; probably my favourite band of all time, and Collins is among the very best rock fusion drummers. I never took to Phil's solo music though. As much as I also love Pink Floyd, Waters can be a bit of a mouthy gobshite at times. I wouldn't expect the likes of Cobain or Gallagher to be complimentary about Collins. They operated in a very different world.
If there is a doubt about Phil Collins talent listen to Genesis Trick Of The Tail. As a drummer listen to any Genesis album from 1975 and back. Really Phil shows talent today. Yes he did go commercial but no he never sold out listen every last Genesis album and you will find some prog rock. I won't go as far to say he is as talented as Peter Gabriel but not many people are including those who slammed Collins who are not even as talented as he is .
Saw that tour at Madison Square Garden. Studied Phil like a hawk. His live drumming is even better than his studio drumming, which is amazing in itself!
I don't like him or his music. But there are a lot of people that do, and a lot of other acts that I like. It's called a matter of taste, not good or bad taste, just different. It doesn't bother me that people like him anymore than it should bother people that I don't like him.
He had some good work with Genesis, although he was no Peter Gabriel. As a producer every artist he touched ended up sounding like Phil Collins. Absolute disaster.
The title of this video is a little misleading. Page's comments feel more like they were about everything that went wrong with Live Aid, of which Collins was a part of that experience, not so much a direct shot at Phil or his abilities. Everyone else just seemed like they were expressing personal opinions of the man and/or his music, which they are entitled to. Not everybody is required to like everybody else just because they are in the same profession.
Curt Cobain didn't like Phil Collins. . . And then pained the wall. . . . TOTALLY valid point of view from Curt who was a GREAT thinker. . But now he doesn't think any more. . Oh well . . No great loss
Well, Kurt. Pardon me if i take YOUR opinion with a grain of salt. The real talent in Nirvana didn't kill himself and went on to form a much superior band called Foo Fighters. Also, I have every Phil Collins and Genesis album (among the hundreds and hundreds of groups in my collection) and no Nirvana music. I listened to Nirvana and thought it was overrated and sucked.
This is simply sour grapes, there "Musicians" who MIGHT deserve this kind of derision (Oh Aye Sis) but I don't believe Phil Collins is one of them. The man is/was a brilliant drummer with Genesis and that alone should mark his place in musical history. For those who say there is no emotion in his music, just listen to Mama for both vocal emotion and fantastic drumming. As for drumming who can question Suppers ready or In the Air Tonight? Come on folks its sheer jealousy and nothing more, particularly "music critics" who get paid for deriding people when they themselves have absolutely no talent.
Hmm. Yet everything I've ever heard from people who met Paul McCartney has been great. Maybe Collins shouldn't have asked for an autograph when McCartney was already in a stressful situation. But I guess we all have bad days.
Imo Phil Collins was a far more talented singer, songwriter and musician than Kurt Cobain ever was, I don't even think Kurt was the most talented in his genre, the likes of Eddie Vedder and Layne Staley were better singers and songwriters and I think if he hadn't have died so young under the circumstances he did I don't think Nirvana would've continued to be half as popular as they were.
Rebellious? Cobain's remarks were beyond juvenile. Gallagher's comments only show how shallow and envious he was. He couldn't be less irrelevant or more pathetic.
wow, this is brutal lol. and undeserved, IMHO. phil collins brought RnB to rock in a way nobody has (one more night, etc). not to mention his drum production waa obviously on the cutting edge of those times
I do not consider at all the opinions of mediocre musicians like Gallagher or Cubain, if I am surprised by the opinions of others. Collins is a complete musician and an excellent innovative composer, thanks to him Rutheford and Banks kept their Band updated, there are many things that I do not like about his solo career and many other very good ones within the Pop commercial scheme. As a drummer he was one of the best in the entire Progressive era of Genesis. His foray into Jazz Rock fusion with Brand X is formidable, being able to perfectly play in bands like King Crimson, Yes and Even with Frank Zappa, the work with Peter Gabriel and Robert Plant has been wonderful, the thing about Jimi Page (Hero of my youth) is totally misplaced, Page became a terrible live guitarist throughout the 80's to the point of being unable to correctly play what he himself has created and applauded throughout the 70's, Macca only continues to live from his Beatle past just like Waters with Floyd who never showed progress as a musician nor has he done anything new, Radio Waves was Very bad, after the Wall, Waters' creativity was limited to multimedia.
After Steve Hackett left the pop direction really amped up. I do like certain tracks on the later albums, but every album had more tracks that I'd rather skip.
Why did Cobain feel the need to bring the subject of race into his criticism of Collins?🤔 Perhaps he was ahead of his time, this Kurt chap. You know, before he did us all a favour, and blew said head off. Incidentally, I'm not a Collins fan, just detest identity politics and race baiting bollocks. Especially by privileged so called musicians.
I’ve always found Phil Collins to be totally egotistical. At live aid, just to fulfill his ego, he had to play at both stages across the country. Before he became the lead singer singer of Genesis, He’ll be sitting behind the drums just wishing he could take Peter Gabriel‘s place, Just watch the live videos and you’ll see. One is the biggest things that pisses me off is people think of him? And not Peter Gabriel when it comes to Genesis. I hated his records with Genesis when he sings lead.
@@andjkh Yeah but Phil was just doing Gabriel but more bland on those two albums. What really gets me is, when Phil sings, "Down, down down" on Lamb Lies Down on Broadway from "Seconds Out", That's when I left.
Phil is right about Oasis not being as talented as they think they are. And they are just as notorious for the Gallagher Bros infighting as they are for their music (maybe even more so). Cobain isn’t even fit to hold Collins drumsticks. And Page, the one who was clearly out of his gourd at Live Aid
