Richey had to have committed suicide. I once said the same thing about never wanting to commit suicide then turned around a few months later and attempted. People's moods change. Then you got him giving that gift and withdrawing large amounts of money ... Just definitely seems like he was making final preparations.
Yes maybe but that was way more money than what he would have needed for what he ended up doing. Where did the money go? Gas, books, and a night at a hotel? That doesn't make sense to me.
@@josephbartholomew the circumstances around suicide often don't make sense because the person planning on commiting it is not operating normally... but then again, who knows. he might've really ran away for all we know. we'll probably never know for sure, sadly.
2:10 he’s talking about life getting miserable, parents dying, grandparents dying, struggles with finding anything new in life and the interviewer is like: :) :) :)
What did you expect Paul King to do? He had to try and make the interview upbeat, he probably felt utterly awkward. He even said "...we find the Manics in a "reflective mood". It's quite clear that Richey was in a really bad place at these NME awards (probably Feb/Mar 94). I think it was the April time he went missing for a weekend then he attempted suicide in May 94 (apparently he had hacked his wrists quite badly). Such a shame cos Richey was sooo cool. I was a Richey obsessive. Even named my son Richard James in 1998.
That's funny, I didn't notice and that was the exact same look on my face when I was listening. Not that it's funny, but more so it's amazing to hear such a polar opposite outlook on life than my own so I'm like "Thank God I don't feel that way 😄."
Connie Converse comes to mind with this, she’s one of the earliest examples of the Singer-Songwriter genre apparently. She had recordings from the 50’s that were discovered decades later and released in 2009, but she’s been missing since the 70’s.
Connie Converse and Jim Sullivan were both musicians in the u.s and both drove off in Vw Beetles , one in 1974 and one in 1975, never to be seen again, I made something on this, just type in the following title above …. Permanent disappearance of 2 musicians
The dude interviewing Richie about life getting bland is smiling while listening to a detailed description of depression and it’s both relatable and terrifying
I’ve only seen that clip of the interview but you can see it in a lot of interviews how the interviewers don’t listen to the actual conversation or they have a certain agenda / aim for it, so the conversations don’t go past their own premeditated purposes. If a interviewer who was present in the conversation had heard that you’d think they’d question further into the meaning & thoughts behind what he said
That's Paul King from MTV Europe and he probably smiled because musicians in the 90s told a lot of emo stuff they didn't really mean. In hindsight Richey sadly meant it exactly that way. Don't blame Paul King, he is a nice bloke.
It’s one of the most fucked up things I’ve ever seen, honestly. And I’ve seen some shit. How utterly heartbreaking to have someone stupidly grinning at you while you reveal your deepest pain. That guy needed someone to mess that smile UP.
@@eily_bNo, he’s not. Nice people don’t act that way, no matter how much emo doom they’ve heard. Nice people don’t grin like utter assholes while others talk to them about sadness.
Richey Edwards case is HEARTBREAKING. 💔 I think we all know what most likely happened, but the alleged sightings make me hope he's living a quiet, happy life somewhere.
If he would be living today.. pretty sure he would came out as bipolar. Back then they call it manic depression or mistaken it with schizophrenia and treat it wrongly. With antidepressants such would trigger pshytocic manic phase. Insomnia, spending money, impulsive reckles behaviour, hyper sexuality etc.. followed by hard depression and sui%cide....
I am a huge Manics fan and Richey was one of my idols growing up. The man was a mess and I really don't think there is a chance that he didn't commit suicide. The Holy Bible is one of the best albums of all time.
@@babygirrrl5147 We are either children of the light or children of the dark. It's possible he just vanished and gave up the fame and fortune to live for God. I don't know. I'm reading the Bible as we speak trying to figure things out
Danny Kirwan, who was an early member in Fleetwood Mac, was a very underrated musician in the band (often overshadowed by Peter Green), had a similar demise, basically fell off the face of the earth. Mick Fleetwood even put a missing persons report on him, trying to track him down. He ended in and out of mental institutions and homeless shelters until his demise about a decade ago.
Thank you for not showing Richey’s full ”For Real” photo ❤️ As someone who was a big Manic Street Preachers fan, almost the same age as Richey and is now almost 50, it feels sad to hear someone so young thinking that when you get older you can’t find new things to get excited about anymore. Young people are just so short sighted sometimes and it’s so sad. There are so many things I could never ever believe I would one day enjoy, when I was in my twenties. Life never runs out of new things to explore. Forever young, Rest In Peace Richey ❤️
I don't want to look up the background information of the "for real" photo because I don't want to stumble across the picture (to respect his privacy), so may I ask what the photo was? Was it of the word "4Real" engraved in him or...? Rip Richie
I kinda wish I had died in my 20's, I don't think I was meant to live as long as I have and the universe is punishing me for living into my 30's and I'm miserable. Maybe some people are better dying young
King Geedorah is pronounced GEE-do-ra, with the accent on the first syllable, because it’s a reference to a 3-headed monster (hence the album cover) from a 1964 japanese kaiju film “Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster”, which is also the fifth film in the Godzilla series. that’s the way it’s pronounced in the film and that’s likely how DOOM would’ve wanted it, being as he probably watched the original and got inspired by it to come up with that stage name. hope this was helpful :)
@@tylerramos7633 it’s the japanese pronunciation; because of how stressed/unstressed syllables work in japanese, there are instances (like this one) where that middle syllable kind of drops off when pronounced, like in words like sakura (pronounced almost like “SAK-ra”). there is sort of “uh” sound in there, but to foreign listeners it’s hard to catch, hence why DOOM said it that way. at the end of the day, both pronunciations are practically the same and are both accurate in theory.
I don't know if i do believe it, but that Richey theory is honestly one of the most believable "this artist faked their death and are still alive" theories I've heard.
Yeah because he’s interviewing YET ANOTHER miserable musician, who’s not saying anything new or original, but playing the part of ‘wounded artist’ to a caricature level.
Richey Edwards was responsible for one of the darkest and most harrowing musical accomplishments ever, The Holy Bible. Wherever he is, hope he knows what a legend he is.
I've never heard of Jim Sullivan, but I wonder if he decided to go explore the desert near a supposed UFO crash site and ended up getting lost out there and died. That happens way more often than you might think. People who have never been to a desert before decide to go exploring, and don't understand how treacherous it can be. Everything looks exactly the same and dehydration comes up on you so quickly, it is way too easy to get turned around and lost, there have even been remains found of people who died of exposure just a mile away from civilization and safety.
I mean really, and theres MANY musicians who live private lives, which is why they aren’t in regular news. Shiloh could totally push out some more work, and still remain private
That richey edwards quote is both sad and very agreeable. Everyone can get pushed to the point of committing violence to themselves or someone else. None of us are strong enough to avoid that with enough pressure. That's why you need to get rid of things that push you to that point instead of just trying to tough it out
Another one I can think of: a Japanese ambient musician called Tetsu Inoue. No one seems to know what happened to him after he stopped producing music in 2007.
There's a Japanese artist called Takako Mamiya who recorded one of the best Citypop albums ever, called Love Trip. Thing is, after it released, she disappeared into the annals of history. Nobody knows what happened to her other than that she retired immediately and got married. Apparently Love Trip did poorly at the time before it became beloved now.
There's some new facts. Confirmed by Kitty Records director Shiina Kazuo, she is alive and well. Proof: vanpaugam.com/blog/what-happened-to-takako-mamiya
I find these types of cases very interesting especially Richey since I never heard of him until a few months ago and started listening to the band. Please consider making a part 2.
Richie Edwards pouring his heart out about his existential turmoil, whilst a vapid interviewer grins, holding a mic in his face - a perfect representation of 90s MTV.
I have another musician that disappeared, Sue Hanel Sue Hanel was regarded as “one of the most ferocious noise rock guitarists” and was a well known figure in the NYHC/No-Wave community. Sue was also held in high regards by fellow musicians like Thurston Moore and Bob Bert of Sonic Youth. She joined the band Swans in ‘82 and she worked on their debut album, Filth (doing the guitar for tracks 2, 3, & 9), and their compilation album Body To Body, and then mysteriously vanished after going to the hospital in ‘89. She wasn’t pronounced dead at any time nor is there any record or obituary of her. There’s no record of Sue dying at the hospital visit, though it was reported that she went because she was really sick and the hospital food made her even more sick because of her diet of booze, drugs, and junk food. To this day no one knows the whereabouts of Sue Hanel, not even swans who last worked with Hanel in ‘84.
@@DDTV_ZA yeah it’s a very interesting story, since it’s a niche culture people don’t seem to mention or know about Sue Hanel so her mystery is left to the side
Connie Converse and Jim Sullivan were both musicians in the u.s and both drove off in Vw Beetles , one in 1974 and one in 1975, never to be seen again, I made something on this, to see it just type in the following title above …. Permanent disappearance of 2 musicians
Your life matters to me. There are other ways to be free & solutions for you to not feel pain anymore. You’re not alone. I’m always here if u ever need to talk.
If that's what you truly believe, please get help. Yes, people we love will die, but that's a fact of life, and grief is the price we pay for loving people. Many people can, and do enjoy life past their working years because they find purpose in other things. Even with health problems (which you don't need to be elderly to experience), many people find life to be a precious gift they're not willing to give up on before their time. I hope you can recognise your gift 💙🩷💜
I don't agree with that at all even though my life is objectively more miserable than that of 90% of the population, especially this idea that there are less books to read, less music to discover, when you manage to keep looking forward after 30 and not only look back on the stuff you liked at 20 you'll never get bored.
Shiloh Dynasty was actually going to finally reveal herself after much convincing from Jahseh and they were going to do it on one of his upcoming music videos for I'm assuming one of the songs she was sampled in and they were going to finally reveal her in the music video but Jahseh was killed and that further scared Shiloh into seclusion even more because the one person who came super close to getting her to finally reveal herself was killed. Not only that but it got her into a major depression when Jahseh died as they were close friends. Sad sad tale.
To add to the list - Connie Converse that went missing during the 70's, though not as much is known about her personal life or music. Still, one of the first known instances of a singer-songwriter during the 50's
I LEGIT think bout richey edwards every day wondering if he is alive or what really happened its scary to think of how many different ways it truely went.. sooo talented and such a smart guy...
I think it's generally believed that either his plane was shot down by Nazis or was accidentally shot down by the British and covered up because they didn't want to admit to mistakes during war that would decrease morale.
He's somewhere on the bottom of the English Channel for certain, but how it came to happen isn't quite as clear. The most probable hypothesis is that the direct flight path his pilot probably took was through a 'bomb disposal' area where returning bombers dumped unused bombs to reduce the chances of a bad landing becoming a disaster. One American in a B-17 told several people that he saw a small plane below their formation as they dumped their bombs, and that he was sure it was a Noordyn "Norseman" (the type of plane Miller was in) because he learned to fly in one. Another person in that formation filed an official 'sighting' report of a small plane below them had been hit by one of the falling bombs which broke a wing off. Attempts to correlate the times of these events seem to make it unlikely as there's a 10- 20 minute disparity. The plane's engine may have quit due to carburetor icing which was a known problem with the Norseman, and the pilot apparently wasn't very familiar with the Norseman which was the only plane available to Miller at the time. There would have been plenty of time for a "mayday" call on the radio and plenty of stations were listening but that wasn't heard. There is some speculation that the plane's radio was inoperative due to parts being taken out to use in a more important aircraft; a common practice during the war. All that is certain is that they were seen leaving the English coast and were never found to have crossed onto the land of France. The Norseman was largely a wood and fabric plane which would likely be rotted away, and the engine and most big metal parts are common for other aircraft; only the engine serial number could identify it now, and that's probably corroded away by now too. Many hundreds of planes have crashed into this part of the channel so the odds of finding it are as close to zero as you can get. Glen Miller was the master of the big-band sound and listening to his music is a pleasure; one of the tightest bands ever.
I know you were joking in the beginning, but people who really commented that stuff about your hair being distracting is weird asf. I never even noticed it until you said that, I just think those people got some weird issues going on if they are tripping off of that.
As soon as you mentioned Scientology I was like mystery over. The fact that the head of the cult, or excuse me “church,” has had a missing wife for over 10 years makes me believe it’s the same case here.
Shelly is probably still alive. Dave (the leader after Hubbard died) is notoriously vindictive and emotionally cruel. He likes to mentally torture and physically endanger as a form of punishment, and endless toil is his style far more than death (look it up, but be warned it’s really rough. The Sea Org is basically a horror movie, especially when you’re being punished). She’s likely hand copying Hubbard’s words in a vault somewhere where it doesn’t matter if she can run her mouth out in the desert, and she will probably be there until her body gives out and she dies. People keep looking for her at their “base” in inland CA and the surrounding areas. The likelihood she’s there is low as Dave spends his time there and that’s where they do their media projects. I’d guess she’s probably at the bunker where Hubbard’s stuff is being recorded on metal plates out in the desert in the middle of nowhere in the Mojave. Plenty of drudge work and if she were seen, no one would recognize her. But that location is almost completely under ground so that’s not likely in the first place. He believes he’s got her for a billion years, and he’s going to run out that clock watching her suffer. The police say she isn’t missing, but as so many police in the area moonlight as Scientology security, I’d take that with a grain of salt. I don’t think she’s missing. I think Dave knows exactly where she is and keeps her exhausted and worn down so she won’t change her mind about being life long and run or bounce and talk. What she knows is dangerous, but not any more dangerous than she’d be as a body showing up after all this time. That would only serve to validate Leah Remeny.
@@nharber9837 COS has proven they can produce her essentially on demand for welfare checks which is why the police said to stop calling her in. They produce her on demand she, as an adult says she wants to be there and it's fine if the "other people" stay around and frankly that's the end of the story as far as police are concerned. She needs to give them an in otherwise they can't do anything because she's under the law, a grown adult. I have zero doubt she's being abused but you're right they're probably keeping her in a state of being constantly run down so she doesn't really realize she's there against her will.
I agree. Shelley is definitely alive and “working”. She’s likely at Gold Base near San Bernardino. I also agree that DM seems like a vindictive person who enjoys torture. Remember that Shelley was the golden girl before David was anyone in the “Church” and his ego is well known.
If you're interested in another case of a musician gone missing, feel free to look for Daniel Küblböck. A former popstar of DSDS fame (the German equivalent to American Idol) who also starred in one of the worst movies of all time, Daniel the wizard. He vanished on a cruise ship five years ago and is presumed dead.
Wow, I vaguely remember that guy from back in the day. Unfortunately by far not the only person who fell from or otherwise disappeared from a cruise ship.
At this point it would be dumb for Richey to come out of hiding, considering he would probably be arrested since faking your death is literal fraud (if that's the case, not saying I think it is)
Christina Mocenchie found out in Scientology they believe millions of souls are attached to your body and you have to get rid of them. Freaked out about what Scientology was really about and they sent her wherever they sent Shelly miscavige, married to the leader of Scientology who has been missing since 2007
Vinnie Vincent (ex KISS member) I remember "vanished" in January 1998 when his wife died and his solo album cancelled, and he wasn't seen in public until 20 years later in 2018.
Great to see someone cover this. Perhaps my favourite lyricist of all time when I was a teenager living in about 5 miles from his home town. A really undercovered story on youtube.
what i wanna know is why so many people got SO pissed over how YOU choose to let the strands of dead keratin sit on your head. how desperately do you want to ruin your emotional health by getting angry over *THAT?*
I really love the Incredible String Band so I’m glad you included Christina McKechnie in the list! The band made amazing psychedelic music that was at the same time highly sophisticated and home woven. They were genuine British hippies and might have experimented a bit too wildly with drugs and religious ideas. Mike, Robin and Rose are all doing well but I fear Christina might be another one of the acid casualties of the 60’s. Maybe she never really left the surreal world the other just briefly visited.
I'm sorry to say I think it's very unlikely Richie is alive. A sad truth is that I live in town with a bridge and a river that is the towns number 1 suicide spot, it is actually saying to say "I hop they haven't gone to the bridge" when thinking of someone who's in a bad mental state, who's not been seen for a while. Sadly now with mobile phones and such it's easier to trace people, many have jumped the bridge and their bodies have not been recovered sometimes for months. As they can get stuck under the water. This is most likely what happen to Richie, I find suicide tragic but also somewhat selfish as families then have to live with that. But if Richey did take off all those years ago, and has lived peacefully away somewhere then it was an extremely terrible and selfish thing to do. To leave everyone to live in limbo all these years. I think the most likely outcome was that he did commit suicide and his body unfortunately never surfaced and obviously won't now. If you just listen to him in interviews, he was an extremely depressed person who could not listen up, he clearly developed no coping mechanisms which everyone needs to fight depression and he was severely underweight and looked like a walking skeleton. His car was being lived in with pictures of his family for god's sakes. No one can really tell me they think that he escaped and ran away somewhere. He was clearly sducidal and possibly trying to figure talk himself out of it in that car, before he finally couldn't take it anymore. It's sad but ultimately I don't think anyone can really believe he ran away.
One thing about Richie that people often overlook, and only say this because I too deal with it,is that he was overcoming addiction, and he didn't want to go back to it. Most understandable, like the singer from Linkin Park, and I hate but do believe that he jumped the bridge. I believe he saw it as a better choice than making other people around him suffer his addiction with him. Horrible choice, no hope in suicide eternally, but I don't and can't judge him. "If You Tolerate This" is a beautiful song, and sad at the same time. A deep truth lost without looking at the past in a proper way.
As a teenager, the Manics were my top band I had all their cds. It was quite a shock when he vanished. I knew from the music press he was mentally ill but I was still disturbed me he just walked away from friends and family. I had never come across such a thing before.
found Jim Sullivan a couple months ago on spotify and was listening to Lonesome Picker. It resonated with me, and now knowing a bit more of his backstory makes it hit a little harder.
I remember watching the news at uni the day edwards went missing. If u are depressed seek help. I was struggling myself at the time. The strangest thing is that the girl was never identified maybe she was an imagined girlfriend
Yeah, Jim Sullivan was pretty good, especially the eponymous album. Seems to be influenced by the late Gordon Lightfoot. Thanks for bringing him to my attention!
Remember an early 80s British Metal band WITCHFINDER GENERAL? Their lead singer Zeeb Parkes (NOT his real name!) has NOT been seen or heard from since the band called-it-quits in '84. The other members have never been able to locate him! When Witchfinder recorded a reunion effort in 2008 they had to recruit a new singer.
Not one of my favourites perhaps but years ago i got really ill at a festival and it ended up they were the only band i saw all weekend and they and they were brilliant live
It's amazing how far the awareness has come for those struggling with mental health issues. There's so many more programs to help people and overall the general public are empathetic towards those struggling with it. Compared to just a couple of decades ago where anxiety and depression wasn't taken nearly as serious as it is today. Tragedies of the past have taught us if we treat those struggling with mental health issues with care and empathy and with therapeutic services horrible things don't happen nearly as often.
King Ghi-dorah is how you say the monster but Doom spells it different as King Gee-do-rah. You know it is in the first song when he says "King Geedorah take me to your Leader"

Scott Smith, the bassist of 80s Rock band Loverboy, vanished after a wave struck his boat and swept him overboard. He was presumed dead, but he was never found.
I'd like to personally know what happened with Davey, from the band AFI. Around 2017 he had paired up with the band from No Doubt to form a superband called Dreamcar. Their songs were fricking amaing, and they were doing media as if it was about to be the start of something massive...... and then there was a long silence, and their website shut down, and I can't find any articles on why the band isn't active anymore. They just disappeared.
I don't think there's a lot of mystery there, Davey's got a bunch of features and a couple of other projects that have only ever put out one album and Dreamcar only had one track that got a modest amount of radio play. Sometimes projects don't come together and it took No Doubt over a decade to come back with another album the last time they did, maybe they'll randomly come out with something in a few years.
Davey is still around. AFI just did an Anniversary show in LA. Blaqk Audio, another of his side projects, has released a few albums. I just don’t think AFI is at the top of the priority list for a lot of them, since a both Kade and Adam have kids now. ^_^
The Shiloh one isn't weird. Not everyone wants to be famous. Sounds like she's a Kurt Cobain type mentality. Loves the music, hates the celebrity. Once you're famous, you can never become unfamous! And I see a lot of my musical heroes get harassed by fans...
