The best way to defang the right wing is this: have a referendum on immigration & asylum policy, and work to achieve the results of that referendum, whatever it is. If the result is pro-immigration/pro-asylum, then the right wing is not the majority. If the vote is anti-immigration/anti-asylum, then that's the majority and everyone else has to deal with that. It just seems like the best strategy is to officially gauge the temperature of the country with an actual, official vote of the people, and then work from there.
Referenda have unexpected consequences. Brexit was sold as anti immigration but it turns out as opposed to relying on short term single migrants we now have to attract whole families to fill in the gaps in our work force. So we now have increased immigration.
