Loving your videos guys. Never even been closer than 1000 miles to a musky, but I look at what you guys do over there, and take what I can and adapt to Scandinavian pike fishing. Nice to see you using ABU's, i live 400m from the factory ;)

Scheels still has a couple of the Revo Toro S for the clearance price of $169, if you are looking to get another one or two before they are gone.

Hey guys. I haven’t purchased musky rods for several years, having owned and still using Musky Innovations, St. Croix, Fenwick and Tackle Industries rods in MH and H actions. My TI rods are their first telescoping models, and have performed without any issues. That said, after upgrading from early Abu 6500C and Daiwa Millionaire baitcasters, trying reels by Quantum, Shakespeare, Abu Garcia and Daiwa, I have been using Daiwa Lexa 300 and 400 reels in various configurations for the past 6 years. These reels are superior to my Revo Toro 50 and 60 reels. I owned these Lexa’s for 5 years before disassembling and cleaning, and they were still working fine, but I was feeling guilty as earlier reels were maintained much more scrupulously. I’ve never had to replace a worn part in a Lexa. The drags systems are exceptional, and the magnetic cast control has been excellent too. I recently purchase a Piscifun Alijoz 300 series reel, which appears to be comparable or superior to the Daiwa’s... for about half the price of the Daiwa 300’s. I will test it this season, but initial inspection tells me it will be a game changer. I got mine for about $90 on sale on Amazon. Magnetic cast control and an exceptionally strong drag.

You will like the piscifun alijoz put a full year on one last season and it surprised the heck out of me on its strength and durability.

I've been using a Shimano slx DC for musky and striped bass this year. Caught a 42 inch musky in march, no issues with the power of the drag. The fish was very sluggish because of the cold water though. I'm thinking of trying that Tranx reel next.

Do you still like the alijos? Thinking of getting the 8.1:1

@@nighttracker1472 Just got back from 2 weeks of fishing, but only used the Alijos a little, but it is built for big fish. I prefer the paddle handles on my Daiwa Lexa reels. I don't like power handles, but the Alijos can be ordered with either handle type. I paid less than $86 for my Alijos during Prime sale... pretty hard to match the value!

Great tips and takes on rods/reels! I'm gonna have to pick up a 9'6" shock and awe for bucktails this winter, still trying to decide on 2020 vs original.
@BurninEights
@BurninEights 3 года назад
Thanks Matt! If you want a lighter rod, I would definitely consider the 2020. Either way though, you're getting a very high quality rod. Appreciate you stopping by to watch the video!

@@BurninEights if I knew I was gonna fish as much as last year for the next few years I would def spring for a 2020 but I'm not super confident that will happen.

i use a 9'6 shock and awe for all my blades, even a buchertail 500. i actually use an 8'6 swat for all my jerkbaits too, its perfect for it. i use shakespear medium heavy cat rods with 4500 kk baitfeed reels for pike suckers and i just got my hands on an uglystick 40-80 bigwater casting rod with a piscifun chaos for big suckers. that bigwater is a serious beefstick.

What would you recommend for a heavy pulling bait reel (double 10 bucktails etc.)? Right now I’m looking at the Diawa lexa TW 400P-P, lexa HD 400PWR-P, the Okuma Komodo SS KDS-436P, shimano tranx 500, and the Diawa Prorex 400P-P. I would prefer a solid line pickup (in terms of spool size) and a gear ratio of 5.3:1 5.1:1 4.3:1 or 4.1:1

So the musky waters I’ll be fishing (where I’m moving) is pretty tight quarters river fishing, and I’ll be on a boat lower to the water. Because of that I bought a st Croix 7’6” heavy fast action. What reel size would you pair with that? 300? 400?

I’m looking for a all around rod what power would you go with heavy or extra heavy
@lukem2492
@lukem2492 3 года назад
Kinda depends on what brand and model your looking at because one companies Heavy is another’s extra heavy. I have a Thorne Predator Heavy that’s more like a medium heavy and the new tackle industries musky pro rod in XH that is actually a Heavy Generally tho a Heavy can throw everything from smallest stuff up to mag rubber. Maybe not ideal for the ends of that spectrum but if you can only afford one rod it’s hard to beat a 8’6” or 9’ Heavy action.
@BurninEights
@BurninEights 3 года назад
Luke is right about it depending on the brand of rod. It varies slightly from company to company. Speaking from the Chaos Tackle Assault Stick perspective, a good all around power would be the Extra Heavy SWAT. This will throw most everything, except big rubber. For big rubber we use the Extra Extra Heavy Shock and Awe. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching! - Ross

Im looking to buy a rod and I came across musky setups. Im going to be using in saltwater application for oversize redfish and large king mackerel. I have a Lexa tws and and am looking for a really light rod (as in overall weight) but im looking for about 9' to 10' in length(for casting distance). I will primarily be throwing topwater in the 2-3 ounce size that are about 5 to 6 inches in length. Any recommendations on a rod would be great.

Not yet. We've tried 9'6" rods years ago, but they just weren't for us, so we've always stuck with 9 footers since. The 9'6" rods just felt a little too long from our standpoint. Thanks for watching!
