Awesome demonstration of timing, zanshin, posture, heijoshin, and reishiki! Although I practice MJER, I can really appreciate the fine details demonstrated here. May this serve as an example of what someone can accomplish through diligent training.

Every part of this demonstration is bad save rai and noto! Fine supremacist ritual and novel choreography, but no practical study of kata theory and praxis!

Sad when classical Iaidò has too be seen in a multi purpose gym, still one ascertains the essence of discipline and true spirit of an art still required in modern life.🍻✌️

Beautiful video. The motions are slow and precise. One can learn a lot from watching this video.Practice slow and precise so that you retain precision when you must have speed.

John Taco: You Tube has a poor post so I'll respond to you anew because I can't find your "modesty" comment. Sasaki Kugaro pointed out how modesty can very much be shallow, vulgar, and deceitful. Erstwhile consider the case of Mohammad Ali because in the face of bigoted and racist America if he had not insisted he was "the Greatest of all times" very few would consider it today. As the Japanese koans point out Waves and Cherry Blossoms are short lived, who will remember their passing?

+Michael Powell If I recall, I was pointing out how rude one of the commenters was being, vis-a-vis some obnoxious egotism. The video is great, and I'm glad you shared it. Also, your point is well taken. :)

My thoughts exactly. After the initial draw, which I understand as a means of blocking your opponent's draw, the rising to your feet ends with essentially an ukenagashi, a block and attack combo, the attack of which is a men cut, to use a kendo term. I am not nearly crazy or arrogant enough to think that I know more than this master; it's sufficient to say that I was taught differently.
@gggfx4144
@gggfx4144 9 лет назад
+Oscur Destal This is like an 8th Dan option for how to perform the kata. This was demonstrated by Ishido Sensei in the UK this year; the scenario is the opponent is coming on fast, you need to avoid/block their attack then get your sword in their face fast enough to push them back and keep them from being able to take a swipe at you. The usual style is the Ukenegashi deflection with 'kime' (a pause with the deflection) with a step back to make space and leave room for the opponents momentum. However in this version the block is narrower which allows you to get the sword back faster, it obviously carries more risk though. I would stick to the usual version for day to day use!
@MicPowell
@MicPowell 9 лет назад
+gggfx More like a beginners option! Too many schools teach Gyaku To as beginning in Ukenagaeshi which is absurd because there is neither an "evasion" or a "heavenly sword"! In this demonstration the overhand draw is no less absurd. This kata under Eshin Ryu became " reverse sword" which is stupid, the idea is Reverse Attack and the proper moves date back to Shinto Munen Kata starting with a tachi nuki!

+powell is always good for a laugh, +gggfx has an interesting explanation but if you step through the frames at that point of the video, the explanation and given purpose do not agree with what he is actually doing. If indeed that were the purpose, it's a bad idea what he is doing. There has to be some other explanation. There is a lot of things he does in this video that I take issue with, but since MSR is fractured it's hard to say why he does some of the things I see here.

@RegTarg011
@RegTarg011 9 лет назад
+Michael Powell You do know he was talking there about himself? -.- ..and his 'amateurish ideas' as younger man. Calling sword kata to be without practical merit is rather 'amateurish'. Musashi wasn't a martial artist or a samurai, he was a ronin thug who lack any edict or honor for martial arts, that of course dose not mean he wasn't a great man, become even greater in his old age ones he grasped the concept of edict and honor and knowledge. Sword kata are perfect way for mussel memory, and that is there precise roll in martial art's, nothing else. So talking down on them is rather low of you. W/e your skills might be.

Sword kata are perfect way for mussel memory, and that... First of all your argument makes no sense seeing that Musashi never got any serious wounds, second not anybody can be a Ronin which implied a Samurai without a retainer. Third Musashi wasn't a Thug, but a Bugeisha which I do dis approve of but it is not criminal. Fourth I never argued that proper kata are amateurish, only that the way that they are treated as cultural supremacist ritual and choreography are amateurish!
@MicPowell
@MicPowell 9 лет назад
PS the idea that Kata are mussel memory, I assume you meant muscle memory is also foolish. Kata when proper have themes just like Zen Koan and the study of Kata in the context of the system can lead to an enlightened perception far beyond rhetoric and dogma!
