It's impossible not to think of Kuchar's raw and unsubtle conducting style as a throwback to the days of insane screechy Russian recordings. Rarely have the expressionistic and nightmarish qualities of this music (in Rimsky-Korsakov's undeniably superior arrangement) been brought out more savagely. Just listen to the sheer intensity the orchestra delivers at 04:59 or 05:54.
Besides all the noisy banging, Kuchar keeps maximum tension in the central episode (03:27) and perfectly captures the poetic atmosphere of the epilogue (07:01).

Insane performance of a marvelous piece (thanks to Rimsky-Korsakov). I honestly love almost everything in this music, but especially the orchestration. The last part with harp, followed by the clarinet and flute solos is gorgeous.

Classic piece, one of the first that got me interested in orchestral writing. This recording is amazing too, I can't believe how clear and synchronous all the accelerandos/ritardandos are.

It sounds to me like the orchestra is barely holding it together, which somehow makes the performance sound even more tense and exciting. Kuchar is one of those conductors who can make "second tier" orchestras sound world class.

@@MisterPathetique if you want a similar sound, I highly recommend Svetlanov's recording of Balakirev's Islamey (orchestrated by Lyapunov). It's so gripping, and the orchestra actually can't hold it together in a few places, but I feel that only amplifies the wild nature of the piece.

@@composerjalen Oh yes, Svetlanov is kind of an animal. Some of his recordings are absolutely insane (even though they sometimes border on vulgarity). I especially love his white-hot interpretations of Tchaikovsky. I never heard his performance of Islamey but I'm going to.

I’m not gonna lie, but, The Night on Bald Mountain music used creativity arranged by Rimsky-Korsakov.
