Gday everyone. It looks like it is easier to remove the snorkel by taking off the airbox door and pulling it out from the inside. I'll do a video trying that in the future. Thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe!

Did this mod along with a tusk racing air filter, big big sound difference under load and definitely noticeable performance gains as it now has the balls to pull harder and harder until about 6,500-6,800 as it can actually move the air it needs to definitely seems to pull faster and harder not by a crazy amount but you definitely feel it I think a pipe and possibly a tune would really finish waking it up will try to remember to update this comment when I add my new pipe

I have a 2023 Adventure, and it's a lot tighter on both sides of the frame tube. I ended up deciding to destroy the snorkel with a utility knife after heating up the snorkel with a heat gun. Razor, fine scissors, two vice grips, and then the bottom of the snorkel fell down into the airbox. Lovely. I'm not the brightest bulb and instead of taking off the airbox cover to retrieve the remainder I used long tweezers to bring it back up, heated it again with the heat gun, caught the air filter on fire ( a little bit ) and eventually yanked it out from the top outside the frame. Duh me. This is not a recommended method, a new snorkel is only a few bucks but how to put it back in if necessary? ;-) Don't use this method. If you get stuck, walk away and have a beer. The beer lubricates the snorkel so it comes out much easier albeit in chunks.

the sputtering initially must have been the ecu hadn’t adjusted for the change yet. Apparently the ecu is smart enough to adjust for the increase of airflow that a snorkel removal and slip on exhaust will give you. Which kind of makes sense if it can compensate for altitude between sea level and 10,000 ft above.

Hello mate I have watched your videos on the klr Always entertaining. You really give thst klr some stick. I have a couple of questions in regards to the Klr and the mods you have done so far. Does removing the snorkel have any negative effects Did the after mkt muffler give you any extra power And lastly do you have any information on remapping the ecu. I have looked at so many bikes but I keep on coming back to the klr. Oh yeah are you happy with the performance of the klr on the highway Sorry for the barrage of questions Thanks mate
@onthebackwheel
@onthebackwheel 2 года назад
Hey mate all good. I haven't dyno'd the bike, but I feel it has a bit more poke now. The snorkel should not have any negative effects. The fueling is changed very slightly, from what I know the ECU compensates for the snorkel and pipe changes. In terms of ecu mapping, there is a power commander for it and talk of an ecu flash. Highway performance is solid, not great. Tops for 100-110 kph, much over you feel like you need another gear.

@Thomas-wk5ll 2 года назад
Once again thanks so much Curtis I absolutely love watching you put the klr through it paces. I watched on today where you went for a swim and got completely bogged in the mud. The klr is much more capable than it looks on a stat sheet. That is why it's taken me so long to make up my mind about the klr. It does not make any sense on paper I.e heavy, under powered and you know the rest For value and its capabilities it's a no brainier. I'm living vicariously through your videos as I'm still waiting for ankle to heal, hence all the questions Any way if your ever on the Central Coast N.S.W pop in for a coffee. Thanks again mate

It's when you combine it with a pipe and tune you get decent gains. Very minor change with just the snorkel, sounds good though!
@beerandgasolinemagazine5581
It makes a difference if you go through water crossings. If you get too deep and water enters the snorkel it will collapse and kill the engine before water can enter the combustion chamber. The airflow restriction on the KLR is the carb. No matter how much you open up the airbox the carb is still going to flow the same amount. Removing the snorkel simply reduces the capabilities of the KLR. It's a stupid mod for stupid people. If you want your KLR to be fast then trade it in for something else.

I call bullshit. Other than air noise at the intake you will likely lose power. These things are designed and tuned by pretty smart engineers. Without other modifications and tuning after market air intakes and free modes have been proven time and time again to actually lose power. Do the research before hacking your fine tuned Swiss clock. Besides that if you must remove the boot do it through the inside of the box after pulling the filter. Not like a half witted fool squeezing it between the box and frame or taking other things apart. It comes out easy from inside the box. One really needs to think about following the advise of someone struggling so hard with something so simple. “Tada” Sorry pal but any improvement is simply placebo effect, in other words your imagination.

My understanding is that Aussie Gen 2 KLR,s are detuned with airbox snorkel, Carb needle and jetting to comply with LAM,s requirements and that HP and Torque are significantly reduced compared to US KLR,s. There is well documented ways to address this in online forums etc. It is claimed that KLR RWHP can be very significantly increased if done correctly, along with a better breathing exhaust. I suspect Gen 3,s may be similar but the EFI may be an added issue also to consider. As to doohicky- my Gen 2 has done 35,000 km without that mod. 6000km service interval adjustment of doohicky was recommended by Kawasaki dealer and has been attended frequently by myself. Touch wood this advice doesn,t prove me wrong!!!! Cool vid and presentation as always- air filter box removal has been documented in past, as best way to remove snorkel.

It's a safety device. It's a collapsible part of the intake system. If you go through deep water and submerge the air box the engine vacuum will collapse the air duct and kill the motor before it sucks water and hydro locks the engine. This guy is going to spend the next two years trying to get it back in. If you want to increase airflow just take the door off and leave it off.

Just take the airbox door off.

Also an option. Not as much protection there though and it's a massive air change

Stupidest mod I've come across for the gen 3. If you want a bigger hole in your air box for some reason (?), why knock yourself out trying to get the snorkel out? Why not just leave the access door off the box?? Just saying.

You could leave it off, but that would be a big difference to the AF, plus all the dust. Main reason is it gives a little bit of performance, the pipe added some more again too. I've mentioned it a few times, but you can remove it easily by going through the other side, my bad!
