A must do in Chiang Mai is this 100% authentic Northern Thailand Hill Tribe tour. Unlike other things to do in Chiang Mai, this is well off the tourist radar. Watch us explore native Thai villages, cook, and eat exotic Thai food with the locals of Northern Thailand.
Many tour companies in Chiang Mai offer a “hill tribe tour”, only to take you to a contrived Thai village that only exists to serve tourists. What Thailand Hilltribe Holidays does, is offer you a 100% authentic Northern Thailand Hill Tribe tour without any other tourists with you. We were taken to two villages: the Karen Hill Tribe and Hmong Hill Tribe.
Book this tour with Thailand Hilltribe Holidays: bit.ly/2zQzOk8
First was the Karen Hill Tribe in Northern Thailand where we were able to meet a village family and cook with them. Being able to cook with a hill tribe family was one of the most unique experiences in Thailand we have had in all 4 months here! The main dishes were sticky rice cooked inside of bamboo and a mix of curries, however we were able to try some exotic Thai food when they served frog soup! Watch and see how Ryan got tricked into eating this… haha!
The next stop on our Hill Tribe Village tour was the Hmong Hill Tribe village, also located in Northern Thailand inside of Doi Suthep National Park. The Hmong village was more advanced than the Karen, and quite resembled a traditional Thai village you might have seen a decade ago. Since so many people travel Thailand each year, it’s becoming more difficult to find the “local Thailand” visitors crave to see. We can guarantee you by taking this tour, you will have a one of a kind, unforgettable experience.
Want to learn more about this authentic Thailand Hill Tribe tour? Read our blog here: bit.ly/2GlUB50
If you’re wondering what to do in Chiang Mai but don’t want to hit up the popular tourist spots, then this authentic Northern Thailand Hill Tribe tour is for you. It took us a lot of research to find this experience, since it’s not on any of the Chiang Mai to do lists you find online. We hope by watching this video you were able to get an inside look into life for a local Thailand hill tribe and are inspired to take a hill tribe tour yourself!
If you have any questions about this must do in Chiang Mai, how to travel Thailand, or the best things to do in Chiang Mai, feel free to leave a comment down below. We also have a huge list of Thailand travel vlogs you can watch to help plan your trip to Northern Thailand, Bangkok, Krabi, Phuket, or Chiang Mai.
We’re Ryan & Stacia from DeathbyVlog. Unlike other travel vloggers, we live and work in a different country each month with a moderate housing budget. Sorry, but no backpacker lifestyle here! Our channel will show you what it’s like to live abroad while exploring top tourist destinations and hidden gems. We will show you mouthwatering local food tours, provide history on each destination, and cinematic broll for all of you film lovers. Each month we rent an apartment or airbnb in a different city or country, so follow along on this journey and learn about countries around the world. We hope you enjoy our travel vlog, don’t forget to subscribe!

Love it when you get Ryan to taste new food. That is what being adventurous in travel is all about. Tasting local food is part of the cultural experience. Love to see an episode where Ryan is tasting all the local delicacies. Stacia, you need to work on this. Stay blessed guys. Cheers from NZ.

OMG, I can't believe you visited a Hmong Village. I love your videos and now I love it even more. I'm glad you mentioned about Hmong people helping the Americans during the Vietnam War. Probably less than 10% of the US population, and most likely the whole world have no clue that Hmong people played a part in the Vietnam War and sadly fleeing to Thailand.Keep up with the videos, I enjoy them very much.

I know I've said this before, but I admire u guys for paying interests in the history of places u visit. U're true quality tourists. Not many tourists pay attention to that. Excellent video. A small private tour like this is the only way to visit the Hill Tribes. Did the same thing a couple of years ago in the mountains above Chiang Rai. The little kids were the most fun. They eventually warmed up to me but at first they didn't know who or what I was. Probably the first time they had ever seen a 6 foot white animal up close.

The first time I watched a video of you, was when you were in Bangkok for the very first time. What I saw was 2 people who I thought were typical party travelers. So I said to myself "I'll give it 2-3 videos and see what's happening". BUT!!! It was not so, the interest you have in a country's culture surprised me - in a positive way. Videos, photos, music and editing have been of the highest grade. Now I'm stuck. You two - together with Kara and Nate (I think you know who they are) are my absolute favorites within travel vlogs. Just like KaN, you two are so humble and respectful to other people. OK. Must say I "tried to kill you" once in Malaysia (I think it was), but of course with the glimpse of the eye. LOL... This episode is definitely one of my favorites. I was in Chiang Mai December 2016, but only for 4 days so I didn't have the opportunity to visit any hill tribes, but next time I'll try to get there. I was also in Chiang Rai. Try to go there and visit Wat Rong Kun - The White Temple and the Hot Springs. There is so much to see there too...

Hi Andy! Very glad you gave our videos a chance. We pride ourselves on being real in front of the camera and always being respectful wherever we travel. We see far too many RU-vidrs who are just flat out fake on camera and put on an act. You’ll never get that from us. And we are very glad to know you see this as well. Thank you 🙏🏻 We also enjoy watching Kara & Nate. We started watching them when they had about 20k subscribers. Now they are huge! And in just two years. Crazy how that can happen 😮 We are headed to Chiang Rai in a week to visit the white and blue temples and whatever else we come across. Excited to see that area 👍🏻 Anyway, thanks for sticking around and being a part of the DBVfam. Great to have you here 😊❤️

It's awesome that you guys visited a hmong village in thailand, and there are about over 250,000 hmong people here in the u.s., btw hmong people get mistaken from mongolians, but we really are hmong and we hmong are more related to the chinese than the mongolians

Hi Daryl😊 We sometimes do the touristy things because if you’re visiting these countries you shouldn’t miss those major locations. But we always try to go off the beaten path as well and explore more of the things that normal tourists wouldn’t do 😊

@Jacky Phantom Hmong is a subgroup of the Miao. Same people. In China this minority group is called Miao. Outside of China, it's Hmong. Most still live in China, maybe about 15% outside of China. About 300,000 Hmong lives here in the USA.
@lifeyang2
@lifeyang2 5 лет назад
@Jacky Phantom I believe it is sinicised. And yes, I am a 2nd generation Hmong in America. My parents, like many 1st generation Hmong in America, went through hell during the war that was mention in this video............. Anyhow, the Hmong story is a sad story. Hmong began migrating out of China during the later 1800s. The Han Chinese rulers were always very oppressive. Chinese written records indicate that there have been many Miao revolts against the Han throughout history, even before the birth of Jesus Christ. The Miao were in, what is considered today Northern China, long before the birth of Christ. The Han kept pushing the Miao Southward, persecuting, and forcibly separating the Miao apart from each other and into separate groups again and again, over and over throughout history........... One reason why the Miao voluntarily began taking on Chinese last names, such as Yang, was to fool the Han that they too are Han Chinese and just speak a different dialect (for example Cantonese Chinese, or Haka Chinese, or many others that is not Mandarin).......... Today, Miao/Hmong number about 10-15 million and are a divided people with many different custom, cultures, dialects, and a diaspora. But they know they are from the same root. They always wanted peace, and to maintain a separate identity. They are a proud people who did not just assimilate and lose their identity.

@lifeyang2 5 лет назад
@Jacky Phantom Wow, u know so much. That totally threw me for a loop. Lol. You are way more knowledgeable than the average Hmong person. Most Hmong ppl know close to nothing about where they/their ancestors are from, nor care to find out. But to be fair, Hmong people have a history of lacking Hmong public education......... oh, and no I'm not saying other groups like Cantonese are descendants. I was just stating examples that there is not just one Chinese language, but I see now that you are well educated beyond that. And unfortunately, I don't know enough about the Tai kadai. I also don't think Vietnamese and Hmong are related at all............ I am impressed that you know about Chi You. This was way back when the Miao ppl were living in Northern China before the birth of Christ. And you are right. Hmong ppl do not look like Southeast Asians. They look more like East Asians. They have lighter skin tones and facial features such as eye shapes that resemble much more of an East Asian type............ I have an auntie who has Hmong eyes but blonde hair. All her children have Hmong eyes and blonde hair except one child who has black hair. I always thought that was interesting. I took a Hmong study course when I was still attending the CA state University Sacramento. We were taught the 4 main theories for the origin of the Hmong as follows: 1) that the Hmong came from Mesopotamia near the Tigris River, what is today modern Iraq, 2) that they came from Siberia, 3) that they came from Mongolia, 4) that they came from the Yellow River region and have always been in China............ Notable figures such as Francois Savina and Keith Quincy wrote many books about the Hmong people, and helped to popularized some of the theories. French missionary Francois Savina studied and worked closely with the Hmong during the early 1900s. He believed Hmong people have non-Asian origins. American Philosopher Keith Quincy believed Hmong people came from Siberia. I get confused because I really want to support the theory that Hmong ppl have always been in China, but I'm not sure because I have meet a few different Hmong ppl before who I wasn't related to, who have blonde hair, Hmong shape eyes but hazel color or non brown color eyes. And also I have my auntie and my cousins who makes me scratch my head thinking maybe Hmong ppl does have a history before China and outside of China. Hmmmm. Interesting.
@lifeyang2
@lifeyang2 5 лет назад
@Jacky Phantom I once heard that it was quite common for Miao to have blonde hair, many thousands of years ago back in the very early days. That the Miao were easy to identify because of this obvious trait. Also that this obvious trait made Miao people easy targets for the Chinese to slaughter and try to wipe out. Whatever the case, today there are only a few Miao in China with blonde hair, and similarly only a few Hmong outside of China with blonde hair.

You are just the sweetest! Thanks for all the love and support 😊 ❤️ I don’t think Ryan will be craving frog soup anytime soon haha, but SOOO HAPPY he tried it!!!! I love the story about the Chai. Isn’t it funny how men can be so stubborn, only to realize they have been missing out this whole time? Haha. Hope you’re having a great week, in the meantime I’ll work on sneaking some onions into Ryan’s food 😂

Hey guys. Another awesome, vlog! It brought back a lot of memories of my childhood days living on a farm. Anyways, Stacia, I don't know if Ryan will ever trust you again. Lol. That was some trick you played on him. :-) So, Ryan, did you really liked that Avocado/Pumpkin soup or were you just being polite? Just curious... Take care, guys!

@@staciasleight3369 ...sometimes you have to do that. :-) We had a rice farm and lots of water buffalos to plow it....and loads of coconut trees and guavas. Btw... are you still going to Philippines? I remember you mentioning that on your Batu Ferringhi Beach vlog #215. I think you said you will be there this month. Just wondering...

Hey man! Yes, I truly enjoyed the avocado dish. It was very tasty. I think Stacia tricked me to get me back for the fish incident the last time we were in Thailand haha 😂 As to the Philippines, our plans changed a bit and we are doing our best to fit it in before heading back to the US 🤞🏻
