Never really understood the whole Pocket Hole controversy. I think it is just ridiculous when people say "pocket hole joinery isn't REAL woodworking." What is funny is that I took a woodworking class in college and learned absolutely zero. The teacher never showed you what those huge industrial machines were for, we were just expected to know how to use them. It was such a turn off. One day I was watching TV and the Kreg Pocket hole jig infomercial came on, and I was intrigued. Once I started using it, and building really sturdy furniture with it, I started to update my tool arsenal. I just ordered an Armor jig, it appears to be a very cool tool. When you build a nice piece of furniture for a friend or loved one, they don't inspect it and say "Oh my God, you used pocket holes, I don't want this thing!" They could care less how you ended up with the finished project. Great video, thanks. Oh yeah, another tool to have if you want your stuff to really start to look fancy, schmancy is a palm router, and it's big brother the plunge router. So many cool things can be done with those tools.
Yes the state of our woodshop classes in my area are subpar at best from what I can tell. I agree on the pocket holes for sure. They are a useful tool in any woodshop and especially for a beginner
Thank you sir! I watched your channel for the first time and it really helps me a lot. I've been buying tools for 6 months already due to I'm going to have my own workshop. That's been my dream since I can remember. I'm from Costa Rica, so that is the reason I had never watched one of your videos, I speak Spanish. But now I've become a subscriber. Pura Vida!
Thank brother! Some would say that I needed to add hand tools but I think they are more of a preference depending on what your building. What do you think?
@@PenaltyBoxWoodshop I would say that most hand tools aren't for beginners. But that's just my opinion. Its all preference I suppose. I didn't have any hand tools for a long time and I think if I would have started out with them I would have probably gotten frustrated and stopped haha.
I didn`t intend to make use of this woodworking book, *TopFineWoodworking. Com* but rather curious about it. I had been truly amazed right after trying it. It never disappointed me in my wish to acquire more information about the art of wood working. Many topics were covered, including everything from wood types to developing your workshop.?
I'd say skip the miter saw for your first workshop and focus on the table saw instead. Then I'd go with some hand tools like some chisels and a regular old handsaw.
I actually don’t think that would be a bad idea for some. I would rather see someone on a budget concentrate on a good Table Saw. I love hand tools but thought that I would leave those for another video. For me I had to ease into hand tools and learn as I went what I would need the most. Thank you for watching!
Nice video. I'm a fan of a router table. I went years with only a table saw and router table. Eventually I added the miter saw. Couldn't agree more with pocket holes. When used appropriately they are great. I know some think they are cheating. But I also have my own CNC. That's really cheating. It's only really cheating if you don't have the skills to do it by hand (in my humble opinion).
Old Guy Woodworks thanks brother! I agree a router table is an extremely handy tool! Yea, pocket holes are great when someone who is just getting into woodworker. Heck, they are great for people who have a lot of skill. All depends on the situation and the build.
Nice video Jesse! Router table and some decent chisel’s & hand planes for sure! Garage sales and estate sales are awesome for finding handtools that still have lots of life left in them! 👍🏼
Jess I know I watched tis video before but since I get so much out of them from you I thought I watch again. Sure enough I learned something I DoD nog know and that is variable speed orbital Sanders . This for that. I have an idea for you that there isn't much about on RU-vid.
