I see others have also recommended Elton John’s “Don’t Shoot Me, I’m Only The Piano Player” and I have to agree. I mentioned previously that all of his early 1970’s albums are outstanding. But “Don’t Shoot Me” is one of my favorites, “Daniel” and “Crocodile Rock” were the singles but “Blues For Baby And Me” just knocks me out. The thing about Elton was he wasn’t just knocking out singles, there really isn’t any filler on his albums. Pretty much any song from any of his first ten albums (yes, ten albums in about five years) could have been a hit single.
Going to add my vote for Elton’s Captain Fantastic album. It’s magnificent. The closing tracks of “We All Fall in Love Sometimes” and “Curtains” will melt your heart and of course the superb “Someone Saved My Life Tonight”. He was still very much at his peak here in 1975.
One of my all time favorite Elton John Records, (and I have just about all of them on CD) is "Don't Shoot Me, I'm only the Piano Player!" I loved every song on that album so much I memorized every song and can (or could.....memory's going to hell now...LOL) sing them all back to you (and could kill any one I could find at karaoke nights). They really cheaped out on the Amazon vinyl reissue, printing the lyrics insert very badly on cheap paper with horrible colors, but at least the music sounds alright. There might be a FEW of his later albums I wouldn't care to get on vinyl, but most of his early to middle career pressings I certainly would (I only have two so far on vinyl) Another pressing you might not have heard of is "Empty Sky". Fantastic songs, but only a few made it onto the radio. Great video, as usual, Melinda! Till next time!
Please check out Elton John’s 11-17-70 album. Very early Elton with just piano, drums, and bass. The sound is fantastic, and if you’re into bass guitar, Dee Murray shows why the band didn’t need a guitarist for this gig.
I purchased the "Carl and the Passions" twofer when it first came out. Back then, the Beach Boys were no longer considered cool by a lot of music fans, and that probably affected the record's sales. Anyway, if I remember correctly, the Beach Boy's plan on each upcoming new record was to pair it with an old album and release them as twofers. But I believe they only did it that one time.
My Reprise is pretty well worn at this point - along with the cover. I think this one was in the cutout bins a month or two after release. And gotta admit, they were running on fumes after Brian's meltdown.
I'm so glad that they did this one. What a treasure. I'm also glad that The Beach Boys are celebrated now. Perhaps they are the greatest American rock band of all time? They are definitely high on the list. Thank you and take care.
@@MelindaMurphy Yes, they were my favorite band during my grade school years in the mid-'60s, probably because of my love of car culture and model car building. I moved on to Hendrix, Zeppelin and the Who in high school, but never lost my love for the Beach Boys.
I've been using Avalon as a demo disk for ages - I have an SACD version of that as well. I was a big Roxy Music fan back in the 70's, and had pretty much written them off after Flesh + Blood. They really went out on a high note. One I can recommend highly is Dead Can Dance _Into the Labyrinth,_ although the original 4AD UK pressing had some not so great vinyl, and the MoFi version tends to go for about $500 - the UK pressing $150 in VG+. It's not for everybody, but the instruments and ambience are out of this world.
Into the Labyrinth was my first Dead Can Dance album and still my favorite. I first got it on cd and within the last year I picked it up on vinyl along with four more of their albums. All of them were $30 and under and I believe still available.
As a 60's aficionado on music, one of the best vinyls I loved was The Rolling Stones "Their Satanic Majesties Request". The record was their 1st unique experiment with a psychedelic sound and featured a three-dimensional picture of the band on the cover by photographer Michael Cooper.
This video got me thinking. Based on many of the albums I've seen you showcase, I think I have a recommendation that you've never heard of. It is something I discovered when it first came out in the mid-70's because I was a hi-fi salesman in a store that also sold vinyl. It is Stomu Yamashta's "Go". It is definitely a concept album and to listen correctly you start with side two and listen all the way through the entire album. The players are ALL top notch and even include Michael Shrieve on drums (The killer drummer for Santana at Woodstock and now a serious jazz drummer) as well as Al Dimeola, Steve Winwood, Klaus Schulze and Rosco Gee. Most people would categorize it as "weird" jazz music, but it's one of my favorites from that time period. It needs to be listened to in full and with the lights low and eyes closed. With or without your adult beverage of choice. With a good system it will send you past the solar system riding on the back of Voyager. You can sample the whole thing here and start with the song, Space Requium. Enjoy!: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-g53zcpaXT8o.html
Thank you very much. I will definitely give it a listen. It sounds like top notch musicians are involved so I bet it's great. Thank you again. Take care.
@@MelindaMurphy ON the 50th anniversary of Woodstock there was a writeup of Michael Shrieve in the Seattle times. His performance on "soul Sacrifice" at woodstock was the highlight of the movie. And he was playing at the "White Rabbit" in the Freemont neighborhood in Seattle (where I lived at the time). I went there and this small club was absolutely packed (because of the article, I suspect. But I was blown away by his band, Spellbound. And his playing? HOLY COW! The guy never stopped improving. And the same can be said of every member of that band. I talked to him later and naturally picked up one of their CD's. Comically, I had not made the connection to my Go and Go Too albums. What a putz! 😋 BTW, I became a regular at the White Rabbit on his nights for a few months. It was a lot more fun when the crowds were smaller.
The 45 rpm versions do sound better because the music is spread out over 2 lps allowing us to hear more information in the grooves. The down side is that you have to flip the records over more often. You gain better sound quality but it does cut the flow of the album. Thank you and have a great weekend.
Hello Melinda ! This is an interesting subject. Although the ”must-have” records are very much influenced by each collectors taste and preferences. Also ; the exposure you’ve been subjected to surtain albums , nostalgia and pure peer pressure from common knowledge. We’ve plowed through our records and came to these 5 albums each : Annette 1. Def Leppard - Pyromania 2. Bon Jovi - Slippery when wet 3. Whitesnake - 1987 4. Dio - Holy diver 5. Rainbow - Bent out of shape Roger : 1. Sex Pistols - Nevermind the bollocks 2. Nirvana - Nevermind 3. Pink Floyd - Pulse 4. Led Zeppelin II 5. Jimi Hendrix experience - Axis bold as love We could’ve easily picked 15 each , but these are the ”desert island” choices for OUR part. They ment something special. They made a difference. They changed our perspective. In other words ; they are OUR ”must-have”s. In my case ; my sons gave me the pistols album cover as a tattoo on my arm for my 40th birthday. Stay safe & take care. /A & R.
I got that Beach boys album a few years ago and wasn't sure exactly what I had, somebody in the VC told me that was the best sounding mono pet sounds I could find and sure enough it sounds wonderful.. I think I got it in a box of free records
Love this video! All of Elton's albums from 1970-1975 are incredible, but Tumbleweed Connection is a hidden gem in his discography. It contains no "hits" but is a totally immersive listening experience from beginning to end. Beautiful guitar from Caleb Quaye, transcendent performances from Elton, and a spectacularly good recording. UK pressings of Elton's records are consistently better (same with Moody Blues). Bee Gees Odessa is worth finding!
Thanks Melinda You've put me onto a couple of artists i've never heard of I would love to buy the Michael Christiansen - Galactic Clarity on vinyl, but the postage to the UK is a much as the cost of the vinyl 😢 But the Beach House - Once twice melody I can get on Amazon Another great video & look forward to your next 👌🏻❤
Years and years ago, I was given a box of random cassettes from a distributor and I found a band/album that I ended up playing to this day. I haven't seen all of your videos and not sure if you've covered it, but They Might Be Giants album Flood is so much fun, unique, and addictive! It took me a few plays, but this album grew on me quickly. Interestingly, my wife and I often play the album while doing puzzles. Anyway, curious if you have the album and if you enjoy it? Cheers!
Melinda! Isn't the Michael Christensen AWESOME? I picked up his whole catalog after Professor Carlson talked about him a couple weeks ago! Where'd you hear about him, you didn't say...but man he is one of the best discoveries I've ever made - love every single thing he's put out! While I'm here, you need to pop over and enter my contest - tons of people are asking me when you're going to enter, they can't wait to see what obscure albums you have! Cheers, have a great week!!
You are still missing out on Elton’s Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy! I may not have a RU-vid channel to talk about it on, LOL,but believe it’s his best album. It blows Rock of the Westies away!
Hey Melinda great video! Thank you. You told me to let you know 2 things in your replies in previous videos. 1. The mono cartridge makes a Massive difference for mono records! I thought my mono records sounded great before but Holy Moly! I’m enjoying them twice as much now! It’s nice having an interchangeable headshell, so I’m able to easily switch between the two. So Worth It!!! My mono records are blowing my mind now. Now I understand the hype of mono. Also the Ortofon mono cart is Dead Silent! One thing I heard about listening to mono records with a stereo cart is that you’ll get more surface noise. Boy was that true! 2. The new 2022 40th anniversary Motley Crue reissues sound fantastic! They Do need to be cleaned first because of the laminated paper inner sleeves, but… They finally did the Crue right! They are a little dialed down volume wise, but no matter. Crank them up a notch and they sound awesome! Highly recommended. Especially nice to have a good Shout At The Devil pressing. Anyway thanks again and take care
I'm so happy for you. That's awesome. I did pick up Shout at the Devil and this version does sound better than my other reissue copy. I had to clean my copy too. Thank you and take care.
I agree Thomas. I run a second turntable with a Grado MC+ mono cartridge (because it was a pain switching out the stereo & mono cartridges). The fact of reduced surface noise on the mono cartridge is a plus. I initially bought it because I got "The Beatles In Mono" vinyl box, but I also find myself seeking out mono pressings as well. Do you as well? Nice to chat with a kindred spirit. Cheers (PS Hey Melinda, haven't forgotten you, my comment is elsewhere 😉👍😘)
@@peterx1957 I sought out more mono records within my own collection and found I have 17 other mono records besides my 3 Beatle monos. My favorites so far are my Analogue Productions Buddy Holly, Elvis and Roy Orbison. I am trying to get Beach Boys in mono though. Thanks 👍
have pet sounds on mono have the roxy music lp a good find got the elton john lp look out for roxy music albums stranded and for your pleasure got them new in 73 on the pink rim lable
@@MelindaMurphy The grooves are shaped different on MONO records and you miss out on right much of the dynamics with a stereo needle & cartridge and I never have bought one either . Anyways thanks for the replies
The Beach Boys Pet Sounds is my favorite album of all time! My Dad has all the originals and I bought the Kevin Gray Mono pressing from Acoustic Sounds and it is incredible. But I am super curious about the Carl and the Passions pressing. I will be on the lookout!
I hope you find it. It's not expensive but sounds fantastic. It's such a beautiful record. If you love Pet Sounds, you may also love Odyssey and Oracle by The Zombies. I put them on the same level. Thank you and take care.
Hey Melinda, Great video as always, I dig your content and views on what you choose for your collection. I have Tigerlily as well (copy #7556),fantastic pressing. I had that particular Elton John album once upon a time, but it was so rough I had to let it go. Keeping my eyes open for another copy. Thanks for your opinions, always appreciated and heeded.
Thank you, Melinda and Michael Fremer. Years ago, I picked up a mint copy of Carl and The Passions "So Tough" 2-fer for $5.99 at my friend Jim Dunn's "Planet Grooves" in Clearwater 25 years ago. I had no idea how significant that particular pressing of Pet Sounds was. Now I do. Carl and the Passions is The Beach Boys. This LP was released when the Beach Boys were fading from the public consciousness. Does anyone remember that The Beach Boys showed up at Fillmore East as friends and guests of The Grateful Dead in the spring of 1971 just before The Fillmore closed? Apparently, anyone who was lucky enough to have been there could not believe when in the middle of a Grateful Dead show, Jerry paused and said: "we have some really good friends here that we would like to bring them on stage and jam with" and out walked The Beach Boys. Melinda, I have recommended many LPs to you, and I have never once seen you say: "I bought this on a viewer's recommendation, and it is wonderful". So here goes: The Beach Boys - "Surf's Up". One of their very best LP's. If you buy it and don't love it, I will buy it from you. So, make sure it is in good shape LOL.
I do have Surf's Up, a beautiful copy from Analog Productions. It's one of the most beautiful sounding records in my collection. ♥️ What a wonderful surprise to see The Beach Boys at that time. I got to see them in the 80's. Thank you and take care.
@@MelindaMurphy OK. Give "Holland" a listen. That was the last of their great era. (While you are at it, include "Sunflower"). Brian Wilson once said "Steamboat" was one of his favorite songs on Holland and certainly of those penned by "bad boy" Dennis Wilson. The picture on the back cover tells a thousand tales of the state that Brian was in. How ironic, he is the only one alive. Maybe there is hope for us lost stoners from back then. But Brian had a boatload of talent, I have little to none.
Do you have any Depeche Mode? Violator is a fine album. I’ve been playing a lot of this bands records since Andy Fletcher passed away. I pretty much have everything they’ve done. He was only 62. They’re inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It’s a amazing album.
Roxy music is tough to find. I visit half a dozen stores regularly, and only one of them has had a modern release of one of their albums. Whoa, I've seen that mono pet sounds, and I always thought it was something else! There are always a ton of beach boys records out there that aren't what I'm looking for, and there are even a couple I've never seen in the wild.
That Freewheelin Bob Dylan cover . It is just a young couple in love walking down a pretty depressing New York st. Nothing should be special about it. BUT....I just get this huge emotional hit everytime i see it.It just has 'something' that speaks to the human condition. It is the greatest cover of all time and always will be.
I agree. There's just something about it. Two young people in love with their lives ahead of them. It's very striking to me because now Bob is 81 and most of his life (and hers) has played out. She always said that album cover was the elephant in the room any time she met someone new. I have actually stood in that very spot when I went to NYC. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
Interesting, I'll have to search out that Pet Sounds. I've always loved the El Macombo story. I've had the April Wine album from that show for about 10 years and love it. I will probably grab the Stones as well.
The black vinyl version has dropped significantly in price on Amazon. The concert has a great tracklisting of songs that their other concert albums don't have.
One album I have seen alot posted online and have seen at stores but never listened to is, Waiting for Columbus, by Little Feat, I finally took a listen and what a live album!! There is a new released mastered by Bernie Grundman, and it is a must have!!😎🤘
I've said for decades that Waiting for Columbus is one of the best live albums ever.... bar none! Little Feat should be in the rock and roll hall of Fame too. It's a shame that music has become political and a tiny few control that outfit in Cleveland.
Don’t know if anyone recommended Natalie Merchant’s Ophelia - no filler, amazing from start to finish. I’ve heard Tigerlilly and Ophelia is ten times better. You really should check it out.
@@MelindaMurphy Wow. I was rearranging my LPs when it jumped into my mind how you repurposed that Bob Dylan record - love that plus the snow! I opened my phone and saw your comment first. Weird coincidence. Ophelia is one on my desert island discs. I can’t stress enough how good she is on that LP.
I can remember from my earliest age of getting recommendations of what to hear. Seals and Crofts, Dan Fogelberg, , Journey { before Steve Perry, } Atlanta rhythm Section, Poco, I think you get the point. What I remember or not I never forgot those unsung heroes who shaped my musical tastes. Two people in particular are Rick Dangerfield { USN } and my brother Richard. To all those unsung heroes thank you.
Since you recommended Song for my father in one of your older videos, I went out and got it and love the album. I am recommending Snarky Puppy We like it here. It is a live in studio performance. I recommend you watch the RU-vid videos of the performance before listening to the album.
Hello Melinda, thankyou so much for sending me. You're reply after my comment. I am getting hooked on you're channel I look forward to watching it every day. I just love all the great music you're into , having been a collector for 50 odd years I can relate to how much collecting venal means to you. I think you're doing a great job, and just love you're take on all the new stuff you have. Wow I'm thrilled with you're taste in music it's very similar to mine well take care Melinda and I will keep watching you're channel as I am such a fan of it.
I scored a Walmart exclusive of Stone Temple Pilots Core Red with Black splatter and a copy of Taylor Swift's Lover Pink , Blue translucent vinyl Target exclusive...I paid 47 total for both...No damage brand new...Shocking because they are Walmart and Target right lol...STP Core Mint/New is 99 and TS Lover is 70 on Discogs...🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 I'm 😁😁
If you like the Band and Dylan and you like Elton, you'd like his album "Tumbleweed Connection" ... love the Dylan T-shirt, I thought that album was pretty good, too
Thank you! I will need to find Tumbleweed Connection. I think Elton's albums are still pretty easy to find. 🤗 I love Rough & Rowdy Ways as well. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
Hi Melinda. Always enjoy your videos. Any Elton from early to mid 70’s are real good. Going back further Badfinger Straight Up and Grateful Dead American Beauty. Tommy James & Shondells Greatest Hits.

Thanks for another great video. You should check out Elton John's Tumbleweed Connection. It's his first masterpiece and one of my favorites. Bernie Taupin's Americana lyrics were influenced by The Band.
I will definitely be on the lookout for that album. I have decided to pick up those early Elton albums when I see one in good shape. Thank you and have a great weekend.

There is a very good deal on the black vinyl version on Amazon right now. I wouldn't be promoting Amazon but since you have checked other places then it makes a good last option. Best wishes to you. Take care.
Hi Melinda, I just started watching your videos so I don't really know you and your musical tastes that well but I'm going to list some of my favorite songs and maybe you already know them but if not, you can check them out. I am just about to turn 62 so my memories are vast but concentrated on mostly Top 40, AM radio rock that I grew up with in the 60's and 70's as well as early 80's. These are in no particular order...just as I think of them. 1. Pictures of Matchstick Men - Status Quo 2. Talking in Your Sleep - Romantics. There is a 5-minute version of this on 12 inch, 45 that I have but have not listened to yet. 3. Incense and Peppermints - Strawberry Alarm Clock. 4. Nancy's Minuet - Everly Brothers. This tune was released in '63 but was not a big hit for them. It is a great song. 5. The Happening - Diana Ross and the Supremes. This song is from '67 and was part of a soundtrack album. 6. Something Stupid - Frank and Nancy Sinatra. A beautiful number 1 hit from '67. 7. Train of Thought - Cher. From her '74 Dark Lady album. I have an original copy of Dark Lady that I got in June of '74 for about 5 dollars from Kmart when I was 14. I have many more but age is catching up to me. I enjoy your videos and insight. Thank you for them, Jon in NH
I love those selections. I absolutely love Cher. Sonny & Cher was the first musical experience that I remember as a child. ♥️ Thank you for watching and for sharing some of your musical choices. Fantastic!!!
Great video Melinda 👍 I have a suggestion on a album but I don’t have it. I have the Cd. Anyway you got to check this record out the group is Black Swan. Jeff Pilson from Dokken, Reb Beach from white snake, Winger , Nightranger. Matt Starr on drums and the lead singer is Robin Macauley is fantastic. The album is called Generation Mind. You got they this. Old School Rock at its finest.
As one of those who recommend Avalon Thank you for considering it I couldn't be happier with your openness and delight with the album Enjoy! God bless!
You’d never heard Avalon or Elton John beyond the greatest hits?.. Go and stand in the corner facing the wall…. Don’t Shoot Me is awesome, but his best album is the autobiographical Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy.
I had heard several Elton albums, I just thought that the greatest hits records were a good representation of his work. I was wrong and have been buying some of his wonderful albums. Thank you and take care.
Hey Melinda , I just pulled that out yesterday ! Listen to Hold on dear brother on side 2 of Passion. It’s the last record I played yesterday so it,s still on my table ! Great video as usual. By the way those double albums were popular in the 70’s & early 80’s . Take care.
I have all the " main " Roxy Music,",records, and cassettes, original pressings as always. Elton Johns " Greatest hits," German pressings and it has all the best rock and ballad songs. I can recommend many records to you,but you'll never be able to get them in the U.S.So,no use...The Rolling Stones up to the last record with Mick Taylor were good, afterwards just recording for taking money...Nice video, take care, even if you are angry at me.🌹P.S." Bay City Rollers," " It' s a Game."
Great video as ever Melinda. I don’t know if you listen to my fav ever band Tedeschi Trucks Band??? I totally adore this band. Susan Tedeschi’s voice is amazing. Her husband Derek Trucks is a total wizard with the slide guitar. I recommend the Revelator album. It is glorious. Listen to Midnight in Harlem. Awesome lyrics beautifully sung. Also give a listen to their Moon Project albums. Four separate albums. I have all four. Take care Melinda. Thanks once again. Regards Dave
I too would have to agree Elton John's " DONT Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano player " is a must have album to get. Track after track with good blend of motion music. Try purchasing the first press version which sounds the best. Try it you won't be disappointed.
I'm sorry for the noise. That was my air conditioning kicking in. I need to find a good microphone for my videos. I enjoy The Basement Tapes as well. Thank you and take care.
Melinda a must have is Sunburst Finish and Modern Music by Be Bop Deluxe Really any Album by Be Bop Deluxe! Also any album by Camel These 2 bands you will discover to be your all time favorites! I have multiples of some of these albums and would mail you if you would like? Just let me know! Love the channel!
Hi, Melinda! I bought Carl and the Passions back in 1972 and have always loved that two-fer. I'm over the moon about the Stones at the El Mocambo, one of their best live albums ever. A couple of newer pressings I love are Three Chords and the Truth by Van Morrison and New Adventures in Hi-Fi, the 25th anniversary edition from R.E.M. Great video, Melinda!
Agree - the new Michael Christensen album is something special! But disagree - the Elton John album is in my opinion one of his worst (just lightweight/rock). But notice his album title joke - should read "West of the Rockies"... & a MoFi comment - if they are using digital (steps) on ultra analogue releases, they don't need to charge more than USD 50-60 for their releases and still making money (even if they will probably sell fewer copies in the future because of their lying/misinformation to the public)
It would be nice if Mobile Fidelity lowered their prices but in this economy, I doubt they will. The Michael Christensen album is very good. I'm so glad it's getting discovered. Thank you and take care.
There is a Nils Lofgren Acoustic live album mobile fidelity. An amazing sound quality. Nils is truly one of the great rock guitar players of all time. It is
As a Torontonian I'm embarrassed I didn't make to the El Mocambo event, then again, I was ten. One person who certainly did was Maggie Trudeau who had just become estranged from her 30 year older Prime Minister husband, Pierre. Maggie I'm sure had an " interesting " time with the Stones as I'm sure she did at Studio 54. The El Mocambo period was also swirling with Keith's heroin bust at the Toronto Airport. When it finally went to court a young blind lady testified on Keith's part insisting how kind he was making sure she got safely seated at various concerts. The decision, the Stones had to do a benefit concert for the blind in Oshawa, Ontario. I ended up having to go to high school in Oshawa, trust me, nothing of note has occurred there since. Thanks for the Dylan / Band info, I didn't know they worked together during Dylan's recovery. Enjoy the music, everybody!
Wow! Such cool information. The Stones have quite a history. So fascinating. What a show for the people that did attend. You were a bit young for it. Lol. Thank you and take care.
Great up as always Melinda. Now I see you mention Beach House. I think 'Zebra' off their third album 'Teen Dream' is magnificent. Go on Wikipedia to find out more about them. I've got some recommendations for you to try if you wish. Yeah Yeah Yeah's Bat For Lashes Marina & The Diamonds Death Cab For Cutie CSS Little Boots The Ting Tings Empire Of The Sun Pnau Young Father's (you will find their brilliant track 'Only God Knows' on the mega 'T2 Trainspotting' soundtrack. Wherein you will find another great band called 'Wolf Alice') The XX (get their first album - it will impress you) Happy Spinning & props for the channel recommend's
I can see why you'd be put off by 'roxy music greatest hits'. You'd think the greatest hits would be an obvious starter for someone new to the band but for some reason it compiles tracks from their only two mediocre albums: Flesh and Blood and Manifesto. All their other albums are CLASSICS
When I watched this video just now (I know, I’m two months late!) I had to wonder, why search out a Mobile Fidelity pressing of Bob Dylan’s Basement Tapes? The songs were not recorded in a sound studio, but literally in the basement of a house and on less than professional equipment. The album cover you’re holding says Original Master Recording. In this case, there is no master recording in the traditional sense that one expects. This album only existed as a bootleg for years until Columbia gave it an official release. Did Mobile Fidelity turn a sow’s ear into a silk purse? The songs are legendary of course, and the music is great, but I doubt whether Mobile Fidelity’s issue is worth the extra cost (is it?). Just curious, I guess!
Lol. I don't have a regular copy to compare it to. I have been picking up as many of the Bob Dylan MoFi's as I can so I grabbed this one. Thank you and take care.
funny, I listened to ODESSA for the first time last night. The Bee Gees are MUCH more than their DISCO hits which we all know and love. I've been on a Bee Gees kick lately and even started buying Barbara Streisand albums that Barry Gibb wrote, produced and also sang on. I picked up the BEST OF BEE GEES volume 1 and volume 2 over the weekend for only $4.00 each at an antique shop. Volume 2 is a German import and I don't think it was ever released in the U.S. I listened to those over the weekend twice each. I have 2 copies of ODESSA, the original 1969 release with the red flocked cover with a gold lettering which I got for $14.99 and is one of my favorite albums I own and a 1976 re-release on a regular paper cover which I bought the same day for $2.99 because the vinyl was MINT - I didn't realize until last night that the re-release is a single LP and has less songs and it was re-released due to their newfound popularity with the hits from Saturday Night Fever. So if you decide to get ODESSA I recommend getting the original if you can as it is on 2 LP and has all the songs. It's a great concept album and if no one told you it was the BEE GEEs you would think it was the Beatles or Dave Clark 5 or Pink Floyd or King Crimson because it sounds so psychedelic and nothing at all like 'you should be dancing' or 'staying alive'. I also HIGHLY RECOMMEND Barry Gibb's "Greenfields: The Gibb Brothers SongBook Vol. 1 (Target Exclusive)" which came out in February of last year. I was able to find it a lot cheaper on Amazon amzn.to/3QkCNq2 - it is an album of 14 of his Bee Gees hits reinterpreted as country songs and sung as duets with some of country music's biggest stars and legends like Keith Urban, Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton, Sheryl Crow, Olivia Newton-John, etc.and Barry Gibb's voice still sounds as amazing as ever.
I agree! Barry was a tremendous songwriter and their harmonies were gorgeous. They put out great music before and after the disco era but I really do love their disco music. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
Here's a recommendation... Wishbone Ash Argus LP once you hear this I can almost guarantee you'll be hooked and looking for their other material they are fabulous band
I have looked at many peoples posts on youtube in search of vinyl records to add to my collection. I see people with massive shelves of vinyl records in the background & I wonder if every record in view are all great to have? I have about 30 records & some of them are doubles.... just in case of damage. My issue is I cannot or won't buy a record if there's a song on an album that I really don't like. An example of this is The Beatles Abbey Road..... I just cannot buy it because of the silver hammer song, it just seems to ruin my enjoyment. Is there anyone else out there that feels the same?
Great stuff as always Melinda. Hope you gave Carl & the Passions a listen as well as Pet Sounds because I think it's a lovely record. The band was moving in a different direction at this point, with Brian less involved, and I'm not sure their label did them too many favours linking it with a classic album from the past when the focus should have been entirely forward looking.
Come on Melinda, The albums you buy are the music you love You need to quit watching those old rich 70 year old audiophile and play the music you love Not Norman Massloff The Mobile Fidelity debacle proved too a lot of people paying big money can’t tell the difference between analog and digital R&R was made for a AM radio
Haha! I love those old classic records as well as my 80's rock and hair metal. I have records for every mood. I'm one of those people that Mobile Fidelity fooled but I wasn't an analog purist so it doesn't bother me as much as it does others. Thank you and take care.
Not a good start for me. I guess there's something wrong with me but I think Pet Sounds may be the most overrated album in history. Do love Sloop John B but...
They just got worldwide attention through an article written about this in The Washington Post. The bottom line is MoFi makes great sounding recordings (mostly) so I think they’re going to get more business, though not at the prices they could get before. The casual record buyer was not going to pay $125+ for a record anyway, and will contend that the cheaper versions sound fantastic on their modest (relatively speaking) system. No one else cares.
There's so many Mikes in this community lol, pretty cool subject Melinda, I have never seen that version of Pet Sounds an interesting find thats for sure. Avalon is one of those life memories so many awesome tracks.
Haha! It's hard to keep track of all of the Mike's in the VC. Lol. Avalon is a wonderful album. I can't believe I didn't hear it when it first came out. Thank you and take care.
That's Suze Rotolo on the cover of Freewheelin' and she was Bob's girlfriend at the time. I love the way she's hanging on to him like the grinning Cheshire cat that's got the cheese. She wrote an autobiography which is an o.k. read if you happen across a copy but, in my opinion, too much about her life post Bob. With the best will in the world anyone buying the book is because they want the Dylan dirt dished and Suze is pretty much a footnote in her own story
I saw an interview where she said that Bob and that Freeweelin' cover was the elephant in the room of her life. Lol. I Iove that photo. It's one of the best album covers of all time. Thank you and take care.
I use Vinyl Storage Solutions out of Canada. I prefer the 4 mil thick dual pocket sleeves with tuckable flaps. They are fantastic! Thank you and take care.
I have EJs first three albums and they are imo, the best with Tumblewood Connection and Madman tied for first. I do like some of his later stuff but those first ones, I'll take over any he did after.
Very cool video Melinda. I will have to check out a couple of those albums. Great score on the Elton John record. Love that Tigerlily album. My favorite is Carnival too. Could put that one on a loop lol Motherland is a very good album by her as well. I think its still available by MOV Thanks for the shout out and have a great week! 🤓 Oh yes, I have fallin in love Ha!
I don't buy MoFI, so no skin off my nose. I still don't accept their apology. Glancing through the comments I don't see anyone bringing up your response to MoFi, so sounds to me that people are pretty much done with them. Decades of lying and since they were caught with their pants down, they want to just now come out and apologize? Pretty pathetic if you ask me. I agree when you said let's move on. I think I have Tigerlilly on cd, but I don't know how many I've seen it at thrift stores. I have some of her records too. (Too funny. I paused the video at 12:52 and it looks like you're mimicking that Rolling Stones cover. )
I will have to check out what I was doing to look like the Rolling Stones cover. 😲 Lol. The MoFi situation has everyone divided. Some people are extremely angry and others really don't care. I'm somewhere in the middle. I don't appreciate the deception but I still really love the sound quality of their records. We'll see how it plays out over time. Thank you and take care.
Hi Melinda Good choice of records. Captain Fantastic and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road are to me great Elton John records. I got very lucky on a estate sale. That Bee Gees record I found. It has the red fuzzy cover. So much great music I cant even choose. Have a great week!🙂👍
@@marktait2371 That's great! You can find some great records and in good shape. The art on the captain is so different. Happy for you. Let me know if you find anything else. Have a great day.🙂
Mark, wow you hit the jackpot! Good for you. It is fun finding records in different places. You never know what you will find. Happy record shopping! Stay in touch...🙂👍
Listen to some young rascals/rascals. Good stuff. The singles collection is a great set. But kind of expensive. Just start with their greatest hits. Or sam cooke. Greatest hits or live from harlem.
Melinda The Beach Boys are my first love. Even before the Beatles. I just wanted to say don’t miss Carl and the Passions. I don’t know the full backstory but it sounds like an album that Carl Wilson would have made back then. It’s fantastic. Don’t miss Dennis’ contributions either. Beautiful!
Hey, howdy! If I'm correct mono was the way to go when there were little compact record players and the speakers were close together. When technology separated the speakers stereo was born (not to mention quad.) Peace on earth.
I agree! Stereo was a great innovation. Listening to mono records gives us the experience of hearing a record the way the record was originally intended to sound. I personally enjoy both versions of many albums - especially 60's rock. Thank you and take care.
