I would like to see more Japanese phrase videos, because I enjoy them. I would like to see one about conversation phrases: Hello, how are you? (I had attempted to learn those myself several years ago. Unfortunately, I have recently realized I had been mispronouncing the phrase the ENTIRE time.) Sigh...anyway, keep up the good work!!
I THINK trying can be enough sometimes. As long as you aren't down right being rude, I'd imagine most people would be understanding. Maybe it can vary though. I think please and thank you is pretty universal. There is a number of little things that one wouldn't think of though... That is exactly what I worry about too! Learning a couple of phrases like in this video is pretty helpful, as well as maybe bowing. Most people SHOULD be understanding of foreigners.
For the last 3 weeks, I was in Japan with my girlfriend. We are both from germany and took some japanese lessons before our vacation, and yeah, sometimes even trying to speak in japanese felt like that the people were somehow impressed that we took the effort, so dont you worry about offending anybody if you are not properly speaking the language, the people really appriciate the effort. btw: we were treated so nicely everywhere we went, both people and country are awesome.
Japanese people give foreigners a lot of slack. Especially when it comes to being socially clumsy or even rude. The strict politeness culture only comes into play with japanese people themselves.
1:38 - how many people 2:28 - do you accept credit card 2:58 - do you have an english menu 3:23 - do you serve vegetarian/vegan/halal food 4:23 - this please 4:47 - what's your recommendation 5:18 - how much does this cost 5:52 - i have a __ allergy 6:46 - is there __ in this 7:24 - please take the __ out 8:13 - is this spicy 8:48 - please give me __ (can i have some __) 9:23 - excuse me 10:09 - check/cheque/bill please 10:38 - thank you for the meal
This was one of the very best video's. The combination of you explaining and Maiko doing the pronunciations was FABULOUS. Do more of these. Maiko Says it, I try and say it, my wife corrects me. It's BRILLIANT. If i pronounce a word wrong my wife just gives me a blank stair and goes, What was that? Then giggling says, did you mean...... then i just say Karaoke the american way and she runs away holding her ears. :-)
@@PaolofromTOKYO Tomoko thinks, Other shopping, or getting directions.I think things like Gomennasai for when you do something dumb by accident.. Or basic politeness things. LIke When to say Douzo to offer for someone to go before you. But also what about an Important Kanji or other kana. LIke Tsunami shelters and stuff. OH OH Where is the Western toilet? :-) That one is important.
@@PaolofromTOKYO Came here to say this too, great video. :) And as Randy said, just daily things which makes the life for both sides easier. Thanks for all your effort you both.
There's no better way to learn these phrases other than from you two. Especially Maiko who did a very adorable and as authentic as it can be translations and how to say it precisely. I agree on the high pitch voice, i've noticed that everytime women speak.
Great job! Other ideas for key phrases: checking into hotel, talking to taxi driver, navigating in a store, at a train station or to a bus driver to get to where you need to go
My 19 y/o daughter was *embarrassed* cuz I used the word *Kawaii* but I calmly explained I'm learning Japanese ✌ Now I'm gonna forward her this vid😁 Arigato for the phrases, very useful
I just took my family of 6 to Japan a few weeks ago. 4 of us are allergic to various seafood things. Thanks to you guys I could navigate the Japanese restaurant and none of had any allergic reactions--one shop owner even asked me why my Japanese was so good! arigatou gozaimasu!
OML, Maiko hime sure was wonderful this episode:) All she needed was a fan! You two should do more of these kind of videos. Maiko did a superb job by repeating the phrase several times and slowed so you can hear each syllable. Maiko should be a teacher:) Paolo, you were marvelous as always...☮🐱
I'd also really appreciate a video explaining how some small shops work, sort of regarding what they commonly say - like shops with the ticket system or common phrases cashiers say ! I'm going to Japan next year and am a little nervous because I still don't know how many systems work, and my Japanese is still pretty low quality lol
I second that when I was in Tokyo I find it hard too. Then I went to Kyoto it's like 360 degrees almost all the places I went and even local passerby to ask for directions spokes English with no problem at all. I was really surprised Tokyo being the capital made me assume they are more easy to approach using English but instead Kyoto is.
Your video was so helpful. . Maiko is a cute n wonderful teacher. She was super clear and the way she pronounced and the manner she used those phrases... . Thanks so much. 💐
Hey Paolo! This is so useful, I’ve had fears over ordering food in Japan, especially as I don’t like seafood. Is there an easy way of asking for none seafood recommendations on the menu? Thanks!
Well, other than okonomiyaki joints, most restaurants in Japan don't do special orders. What you see on the menu is what you get. So obviously, avoid sushi spots or anything that will specialize in sea food. If you go to an izakaya or any other restaurant that isn't strictly sea food, just take the menu and pick out what you like.
Since I’m Japanese I never watched this video but was curious and watched it now. I have to say, Maiko looks SO pretty! Her yukata and makeup are definitely on point 😍✨
Thanks for another awesome video! Learning phrases is really important for people travelling to Japan. Ordering food to me, is one of the most daunting things. I struggled a lot figuring out what to say. I wish I had this video when I went last year!
Im japanese. Complement: When you come to japan and eat in restaurant, I hope you to say "itadakimasu(いただきます、i-ta-da-ki-ma-su) before you start to eat. This phrase means you thank for everyone who involved your meal.
Funny story about #7 from a friend of mine who studied Japanese in University: During the unit about shopping, the professor had all of the students break out into groups and roleplay a shopping scenario. Midway through, the professor stopped every group, because they were pronouncing the words wrong. It was at that moment that he learned something very fascinating: Kore wa Ikura desu ka = How much is this? Kore wa iKUra desu ka = Is this caviar? Too many of my friend's class (himself included) were putting emphasis on the second phrase and not the first. Lesson learned, and a little laugh along the way!
I guessed the excuse me part correctly i went to an authentic sushi restaurant in LA with a predominantly Japanese staff. I know sumimasen is excuse me so I raised my hand and said sumimasen, later during the check the waitress never showed up. Probably expecting me to say okaikei onegaishimasu lol
Paolo! And maiko! My name is chabbypoptokyo nice to meet you guys! Awesome video! I myself is from tokyo. Been here for 5 years now and li love it! This video is really helpful for new comers to tokyo thanks for sharing ❤️🇯🇵 love maikos expression! So true!🤣🤣🤣
These were helpful. I want to avoid being 'that rude foreigner' when I visit so it was great to have Maiko breakdown the pronunciation like this. Now I just need to learn/memorize how to say 'Sorry, I don't speak Japanese. Can we speak English?'...I always learn this phrase (replacing Japanese with whatever language) in the native tongue of places I visit...at least that gives them the chance to say no, instead of me just barging in with English.
1:38 - how many people Nan mei sama desu ka? This was an excellent video. The way that you broke down the phrase and with Maiko say it in different manors, spoken and slowly. Dōmo arigatōgozaimashita どうもありがとうございました
But when you ask them questions like “ what do you recommend”(in Japanese). They are going to respond back in Japanese. it’s not like you understand...
Amazing!! Could you please do another one for making reservation on the phone? I heard that many popular places (especially for sushi) require advance RSVP, how would you do that as a non-speaker?
Honestly I think most tourists should just stick to English. Most responses you get will be totally confusing if they think you sound anywhere near a level to comprehend and if you at least speak English (slowly) they'll realize you don't understand Japanese and will treat you like a 5 year old.
2:13 - how many people 2:38 - do you accept credit card 3:06 - do you have an english menu 3:32 - do you serve vegetarian/vegan/halal food 4:39 - this please 4:56 - what's your recommendation 5:21 - how much does this cost 9:23 - excuse me 10:21 - check/cheque/bill please 10:47 - thank you for the meal
Maiko really hits home on that dom fetish I have. Like in ijiranaide nagatoro-san. Just getting kicked in the balls and talked down to like I'm downright retarded really tickles my crundle.
I know this is old, but I was hoping you still had the light pink T shirt you're wearing in this video from your Merch store. It's not there anymore :(
I have allergy for caffeine and most people don't get there is caffeine in things like matcha, tea, tiramusi etc. Gonna be hard to explain lol. How do I say caffeine in Japanese?
Thank you very much for your this video i appreciate and it's very helpful and nice .If it's possible could you please make a video like how to answer room service phone calls in the restaurant?Thank you again
LOVE YOU MAN! YOU ARE MY HERO!!! I'm going to visit Japan soon, it's been my forever dream to visit it but I was so lost I didn't know where to start searching until I found your channel, I've learned so many things from your videos. Thank you for all of your efforts, your channel is just so perfect! Each video you made is so amazing, filled with fun, GREAT information and well-edited. You seriously helped me a lot, thank you again! + Maiko-san you're soooo pretty
I really want to visit Japan, but my wife has gluten intolerance. Is there an easy way to spot what is safe for her to eat there? Is being gluten free difficult in Japan? What would you recommend?
Woah in my country it is REALLY RUDE to call the waiter. Here you need to ALWAYS wait even if it takes them a long time. I will definitely feel really bad yelling sumimasen :D
how many people? nan mei sama desuka? nan nin desuka? do you accept credit card? kado tsukaemasuka? do you have an english menu? eigo menu wa arimasuka? do you serve vegetarian / vegan / halal food? bejitarian / bigan / hararu taio shitemasuka? this please? point and say: kore kudasai what's your recommendation? assume wa nandesuka? how much does this cost? o-ikura desuka? i have a shrimp / egg / peanuts / gluten allergy ebi / tomago / pinattsu / guruten arerugi desu. is there meat in this? kore niku haitte masuka? please take the shrimp out ebi nashi de onegai shimasu is this spicy? karai desuka? can you make it spicy? karaku dekimasuka? can i have some water / beer? omizu / biru kudasai excuse me sumimasen check / bill please okaikei onegai shimasu thank you for the meal gochiso sama desu
Very useful video. Love when Maiko-Chan tilts her head left or right to emphasize the key words. Paolo should repeat after her and tilt his head, too! Kawaii! 😆 🙏💛🤙🍧🏝
Hi everyone I have a very random question, is it possible to buy a sakura mobile SIM card in a store in Japan? Or can you only buy it online and let it be delivered to a place you want? Does anyone have experiences?
I must purchase Maiko the wind up Japanese doll who says random Japanese things in 3 different speeds all the while tilting her head. That's on my bucket list next.
the polite sounding parts are like paragraphs long I would just like a Japanese friend to accompany me if I go to handle all of this but thanks great great great video really liked it if im on my own I will use it
This guy is weird . He goes around intruding on people’s lives and gets married online in a office and thought it was cool........so we will say what we want . Thanks
Pretty much sums up our experience eating out in Japan, we ended up helping another traveler couple to translate (they are vegan) despite not knowing Japanese other than the few basics you have shown in the video. Very helpful and useful video.
