I am looking out of my window this morning and can find all of these in nature, such as the light faraway mountain against the light morning sky. I see them all! Even my nonartist husband thinks it’s cool!

Okay I just learned something that I kind of knew or heard about but did not know completely and how to appreciate & apply it to my own artwork or see it applied to others artwork. Definitely noticed in some of my paintings that I have successfully applied 2-3 of these to my artwork already without planning to do it on purpose, or at least not consciously. 😉😊😁Thanks so much for explaining this principle to me and sharing this informational video with us. Oh I forgot to answer the question: I would say some dark on dark values on the bridge of the muzzle and the brow of the left eye & ear as you are looking at the painting.

Is what you're talking about called chiaroscuro?
@rachelparkervarner
@rachelparkervarner 2 года назад
Not exactly, but chiaroscuro has to do with the juxtaposition of lights and darks to create 3 dimensional form

I watched this last week and started applying it on the snowy mountain paintings I've been deep into lately. It's made a huge difference, especially where the ridge line meets the sky. My mountains are so much more glowy and don't look as pasted onto the sky. Thank you!
@rachelparkervarner
@rachelparkervarner 7 месяцев назад
Yes! It works on everything! It is such a game changer for me to at least know this. I find that even if I only get at least 2 or 3 of the pairings it's a vast improvement over only having 1 pairing.

My goal this year is to juzzzz ? my paintings with lost and found edges. Would you say the background needs to be done last to accomplish that?
@rachelparkervarner
@rachelparkervarner 8 месяцев назад
The background can be done first or last. The trick is to find a reference that just gives you these lost and found edges are, where the light on light and dark on dark edges are, then you won't have to figure that part out!

Wonderful explanation of this! I watched Nina of NVfineARTstudio right before this about connecting one's elements via values and textures, which had similar advice. Now, I have even MORE to "worry" about when painting. 😀 Even though your interest is animals (which you do magnificently) your portraits are stunning, and I think many would love to see a tutorial on those. The Japanese girl was jaw dropping. I have been there, and it is a wonderful representation. The way you handled the different aspects and drew our attention - wow! My only small nit (yeah, I know - everybody's a critic) is, for my preference, the phone kind of disrupts the cultural mood. It would be good to include for a photo, to show the dichotomy of new vs. traditional. It seems to draw my attention in the painting, as it was so different than the other elements in its modernity. Thanks you for sharing your talents with us!
@verwilliams1
@verwilliams1 2 года назад
I thought the Japanese girl was stunning. Very representative of what I saw when I was there. If I had her talent and skill level I would have painted a girl very similar. It takes me back to images of Japan.

@@verwilliams1 It certainly is stunning! Rachel is enormously gifted, and I admire her greatly. Even the paintings of her own that she does not like are excellent and far better than I could hope to produce. My preference was just without the phone.

I need to watch that video by @NVfineARTstudio - it sounds interesting : ) I liked the phone because it made this painting different than what you would expect. I do want to do more people tutorials, I just wish there was more time in the day!
