trigger warning one of the books deals with domestic violence which can be traumatic for some. if you wish to skip that part, use the timestamps at the bottom and skip the discussion about "when i hit you".

Great video! The Idiot is also one of my favorite books. I feel like I was one of the few people who really enjoyed its slowness! I also loved seeing the mundanity of college, signing up for classes, etc. I think it inspired a love of education in me, too. Another book that I read at the beginning of every semester to inspire me is Educated by Tara Westover, I don't know if you've read it. It's a memoir, so less literary, but I still find it very powerful (just a warning: it also deals with domestic abuse). Looking forward to reading all the other books you discussed! I always trust your recommendations. The will to change has been on my tbr for forever, I really need to get on that. But bell hooks are always so expensive to buy, and my library never has them. Although I spent way too much money on books anyway, so that's kind of an excuse haha I'm sorry you had to experience Intimate Partner Violence. I know it's chliché to say, but I think it's really courageous to be so open about it. I hope you have had, and still have, the time and space to heal. Hope you have a fun time off!

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who enjoyed the Idiot! I've seen a lot of people complain about it so I wasn't sure if liking it was an unpopular opinion. I've also read Educated by Tara Westover, I should probably give it a re-read as I don't remember it well. I love that you read it at the beginning of every semester, what a lovely tradition! I highly recommend the Will to Change, I think you would like it, although I will say that it is quite a beginner friendly book so I preferred it as an audiobook (I don't recall if you listen to audiobooks or prefer reading books). I feel very fortunate as the Toronto Library has a fair number of bell hooks work (although most of the audiobooks have a long wait) but I ended up coughing up the money as I liked this one so much. Thank you so much, when I initially started this channel I didn't feel comfortable sharing more person aspects of my life, but we all go through our various challenges, and I hope that sharing more on here will help other people in some way, shape or form. I feel like I've healed as much as I can on my own, and I'll now start working with my therapist - sometimes nice to get a professional's recommendations! Thank you - I can't work to have some much needed time for rest and relaxation. I hope to spend the majority of the time reading lots of books lol. Thanks as always for the lovely, thoughtful comment. I hope you have a lovely day and weekend!

The first life changing book I thought of for me was Childism: Confronting Prejudice Against Children by Elisabeth Young-Bruehl. In this book Young-Bruehl uses a psychoanalytic framework to suggest there is a prejudice against children as a group which is comparable to racism or sexism. For me personally, this book really contextualized a lot of thoughts and feelings I had when I worked in elementary (special) education; at the same time it also made me think about my childhood differently.

Wow thank you so much for sharing, I've added this book to my tbr. I'm very interested in the rights of children and child welfare, and had considered focusing on this area in my future research so I will definitely give this book a read. I noticed in the book's description that the author discusses the Nicomachean Ethics which is one of my favourite books - very interested to see the relationship between the two. Thank you again so much for the lovely comment and for sharing this fascinating book. Have a lovely day! xx

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on When I Hit You and also some of your personal experiences. It was one of my books of the year, when it came out. And I agree with everything you said and can definitely relate to that.

You are very welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I'm glad to hear you've read When I Hit You, I haven't seen too many people talking about it on Booktube and I thought it was excellent. Have you read any other work by that author?
