yes my kitchen cabinets are navy on bottom and white on top, I dont care of its out of date, I like it. White makes my kitchen looks big and clean compared to my original wood cabinets before
We are doing a white kitchen and I'm happy to have a kitchen aesthetic I love no matter what trends will come. It will be my first white kitchen and it's not like I'll be going to other people's kitchens and getting sick of their white kitchens lol! Do what you like for your own space :D
Me too . This will be my first white kitchen. Think if I get bored I then just paint it different color . I hate the idea paint on natural wood cabinets.
Same! New house and I’m going to paint the cabinets white. I was doing research to see if there are new styles I might like, but didn’t like the new trends in this video at all lol.
One of the top three most expensive renovations in your home is the kitchen. Stay away from trends, stick to classic lines and utilize color in your paint options and accessories. Make sure your lay out works (really important) and enjoy your space. A white kitchen (cabinets) is a classic that will stand the test of time whereas a black kitchen will be cool for a few years until it isn't. Also, a "boring" kitchen with neutral color and functional design will bring a higher return when you try selling your home.
No. It’s your house. Do what you like as you live in it. Too much emphasis is placed on the future owners. Of course, likewise, too little emphasis is placed on the possibility that your idiosyncratic design is not very desirable elsewhere. Make your home a beautiful happy place to be in regardless of the trends or classics.
No all white for me, we did sage green cabinets, black and white tile, (my house was built in the 1920s) trying to go for the 20s aesthetics. W black granite. Now my hubby is a carpenter who does the remolding in kitchens and he loves the trends etc lol he calls it job security.
I feel like white kitchens will stand the test of time, but I definitely like the idea of adding natural elements to enhance the all-white kitchen. We have wood floors that help break up the monotony of the white, and I'd like to add a natural wood top to our little bar that divides the kitchen and dining room. Other than that, keeping everything all white - cabinets, counters, and backsplash.
I’ll always have a white kitchen, never mind what’s trending, but besides that I generally prefer painted cabinets to natural wood. The color in my kitchen comes from the walls, which is easier to change if I get tired of it.
I love my white kitchen with lots of colour in dishes and accessories. I’m not too concerned about what’s in style. But, I do love seeing all of the colourful cabinets.
Since I never cared much about trends, I just designed the new kitchen for my own house to please myself. It has natural maple cabinets with shaker cabinet fronts , granite counters that are a blue wave ( a kind of pattern with the color of the maple and black and brown and white , but not too busy) with the cabinets all the way to the 9’ ceilings. Backsplash is 4” white glossy tile with a 2” charcoal accent tile 6” under the upper cabinets , since the kitchen is in the same room with the fireplace that is stacked charcoal stone. We like it.
We just did the same! You pretty much just described our kitchen. It’s beautiful with maple cabinets, shaker doors, white subway tile with gray grout, granite countertop and oak floor.
We added on an addition with a large kitchen in early 2000s. Honey maple cabinets, with slight edging on panels, tall cabinets ,with Volga blue granite (actually black with blue in the granite). Neutral backsplash natural stone. My kitchen is large and stunning. Sounds similar to yours. So maybe it is classic!
That sounds realllly intriguing….wish I could see photos. We have a VERY tiny pass-through style kitchen (in our very small house)…..and I definitely NEED ideas and visuals in front of me!! But shades of vanilla had never occurred to me…..
I have always preferred a creamy white color rather than a stark white for cabinets. You can still use whatever color choices you like. It is warmer, more inviting. Isn’t the kitchen the real gathering room for most families? Lately, I have been looking at a light taupe for cabinets, which pairs beautifully with red. Red is a nice addition in fabrics, wallpaper, cushions, because it is the color that stimulates appetite. Kitchens are very personal. To me, the most important factor in kitchens is the quality of your cabinets. And love around your table.
I think a white kitchen wit a wooden top is the most beautiful thing you can have. Add some colourful back splash and colourful containers for flour, sugar and so on on open shelfs. My dream.
Flat panels are much less expensive, and if you aren’t careful they can look cheap. I have to say, the shaker style cabinets are a classic and my favorite, no matter what color or type of wood.❤
I agree. Flat panels were very popular during the mid-century period, but fell out of favor for a few years for cabinets that had more personality. They are back again, and whether or not they stand the test of time remains to be seen. The difference is that now being tagged with "European" or "minimalist" monikers may make the difference as to whether or not they continue to be trendy.
I LOVE my white kitchen! We painted it only last year . It’s so bright. We have a busy kitchen floor because although our house (1961) has beautiful, original hardwood floors, they didn’t put them in the kitchen and dining. It’s a large, open area so I did something a bit more dramatic. Our white kitchen compliments it perfectly! You can trace trends until you’re broke and in so much debt. It’s not worth it. I love timeless instead.
I'm moving into a house with blue countertops!!! I'm totally going to embrace the look. May paint the cabinets a coordinating gray and use copper metals for the accent. I think people should do what they like.
I fell in love with white kitchens waay back in the early 2000s when I saw Diane Keaton in Somethings Gotta Give. Will always love them no matter how many people them.
Sorry buddy but we’re moving into our new house which has a white kitchen and our house that we’re selling has a white kitchen, but I agree with you about adding texture and some color.
Sorry but I hate those European looking flat cabinets, especially the shiny Formica looking ones. And the brown ones look like an office kitchen. Yuck.
Thank you! I'm so tired of white, white, off white, tan, every where. I guess I'm out of style. I guess I'll just have to wait til blue comes back and pink for my bedroom. I'm kinda a tomboy but I love my girly pink and white bedroom and don't care if it doesn't match!
My kitchen was all-wood and designed in 2006. The wood is rustic knotty cherry with no stain, they’re beautiful but with age there’s a lot of yellow and orange tones and with the floor being the same wood, it was a lot of wood. I just had my upper cabinets painted SW Aged White last week and it’s absolutely gorgeous! Warm but not yellow and it does a perfect job of toning down all the wood. It’s classic and definitely not trendy, which as an interior designer I think is a good thing and I’m sure I’ll continue to love it for many years.
Just spent 6 months designing a kitchen. Slab was my first choice until the designer came back with the price for the beautiful European cabinets.. $42k! Back to American made, painted, paneled cabinets for 15% of the price.
You should include a discussion of cost when comparing cabinet fronts. I wanted full overlay flat panel cabinet doors and the cost was 20% more then Shaker style. We compromised on having a 1/2 inch of cabinet showing around the edge of the doors to save $3600. The cabinet dealer said the cost is related to the lower demand for flat panel doors. Ours are laminate, not slab. Hope I used the correct terms. 😂
I prefer flat panel cabinets, my husband loves more detailed cabinets. I said ‘if you clean your choice to my standard weekly, we get them”, I have flat paneled cabinet doors and drawer fronts! 🤣 My uppers are a creamy color and my lowers are a medium blue and replacing the countertops with the new marble laminate and putting it as a backslash (very limited budget right now), we also put a kitchen grade sheet of stainless steel as the backsplash behind the range (so easy to clean the grease and splashes). The easier it is to clean, the happier I am!
@@hhhhoooojdjd I get it, here in the USA, shaker style and white are in everyone’s home. But for me flat panel, whether cheap or expensive, fits my aesthetic better- I do what is right for me and functional for the way I live, regardless of popularity.
In 2008 I designed my kitchen with cream color on top, brown stain on bottom and my stove has a green furniture look surround with a French inspired hood vent cover. My back splash has stone and a few metallic tiles scattered in. I’m still in love with it and if I give it time the trends will come back to my way of thinking!😉😄🥰
In the process of re-doing my kitchen right now. Will have honed black countertops and black backsplash tile laid in a herringbone pattern. Sounds dark, huh? It's actually neutral as I'm having the cabinets painted Aegean Blue. And will have under-cabinet lighting. Can't wait.
I have a portion of my cabinets painted Aegean Blue with 2” x 10” Remedy Daltile backsplash in a warm charcoal color, Zen. And it is beautiful with the rusty-hued granite that came with our home. You’ll love that color in your kitchen! I do.
@@tesstraylor57 Thank you so much, Tess. It is a difficult decision to go with a color as my cabinets have been a medium woodtone for over 20 years. But I just love this color and it helps to know that you have already done it and love it!
Love my white kitchen and so happy when I am in it! I add some pops of color here and there and some wooden accessories to accent. I can’t handle anything dark and dreary so depressing and especially in a kitchen. I guess I am not about what’s in and what’s out with trends. I just like my home to be my happy place and everyone is different I guess. Have a blessed day!
In small kitchens, white walls and cabinets can feel more spacious. I think adding color with countertops and backsplashes can be where trends can be added. I think neutral floors are timeless and can accommodate different styles. I personally don’t like flat slab cabinet doors, but that is because contemporary is not my or my husband’s style. He is a woodworker so everything has to be built by him per his specs or he won’t be content. I want painted classic Shaker style cabinet doors, the cost is so much less because the wood doesn’t have to be perfect. He wants a darker color on the lower cabinets and a lighter color for the top cabinets, I think it can work. have watched arched raised panel orange oak doors and other colors of wood raised panel doors come and go and I don’t want them again. I might make the exception for a china cabinet with neutral stained wood and glass inserts on the top cabinet doors.
I'll be painting my cabinets white, because well it's just what I want to do & already purchased the paint, but will add more natural elements with my upgrade. I can live with it.
I'll always love a soft white kitchen cabinet. Glass doors or open shelves up top, baker's rack, french country/cottage, sage, blue, yellow or pink walls, botanical theme, natural/light wood accents and little white appliances. Light wood, marble or matte formica countertops.
i've usually cooked in darker kitchens. What I like about the white kitchens is that the white reflects light. This makes it easier to see what you are doing all over the kitchen. Everything doesn't need to be white, but try to have at the very least a white (or bright) backsplash. You must consider cooking and preparing food on the counters over just the 'look.' Your body might be blocking much of the direct light. I've cooked in a lot of different kitchens. The dark ones are a nightmare.
Oh goodness! I love my white kitchen cabinets! Trends come and go ! White cabinets are timeless!!! I'm a Texas girl...just hold your breath and the weather will change just like trends! Do what you love and forget about trends!
Updating my kitchen with white shaker cabinets, white subway backsplash, and a light gray granite countertop. Stainless appliances except for my BlueStar range which is a rich red. The red is eye-catching and breaks up the monotony of the white. Plus, my KitchenAid mixer is the same color as my range, and with hanging utensils and cutting boards, the white is not boring. For me, white kitchens will always be classic and timeless. All it takes is a little bit of color thrown in. And that's color you can always change later.
I’m building at the moment, my theme is dark modern woodland: black stone counter top, light grey counters and walls with light grey backsplash, matte black hardware and handles, grey hybrid wood floors, dark grey tile wet area floors with soft grey wet area wall tiles. I want to play with dark woodland wallpapers and dark brick wallpaper. Dark brown wood furniture with dark grey/navy fabric seating. I’m also accenting with light bamboo for organisation and shelving. Black appliances and colour when decorating. I’m going incorporate greenery to go with the dark woodland vibe through plants in white pots. I’m so excited
I think white kitchens with black are beautiful and nothing beat that others colors will i get tire very soon. Colors are coming and going white and black in the right place will stand for ever. Nothing more beautiful than a clean looking kitchen. But thank you for letting us know your tastes, in colors. Good for you. 🙂
I am currently putting in a custom high end kitchen of my dreams in FL ,( but doing a dark blue custom built ins in the den .) I had done one other kitchen in the early 90s that was a white washed/ pickled pine bc my husband wouldn’t let me have a white kitchen … finally l’m getting the white kitchen of my dreams .. in my 60s . In vogue or not .. l’m happy
Right on people who said do what you like, esp. in a room you where spend so much time. I'm an acrylic artist who loves color. We've had boring biege, gloomy gray, and now antiseptic washed-out white. When it's time to resell, you can always paint walls and even cabinets. I'm into antiques and love old-fashioned blue and yellow kitchens in all their variant hues and shades. I just moved into a condo with lovely cherry cabinets, and no, I'm not painting that wood! Going with blue and yellow backsplash.
I rarely agree with you on your color choices. I totally, completely, absolutely agree with you on this one! Yes, let's freshen up the kitchens! Anything but white!
The kitchen has been the room I have been slow at thinking about my design choices. The cabinetry is custom but not my favorite. Paint or not to paint? BUT!!!...now James throws me the lifeline I have been looking for. Those slat cabinet fronts are a hard YES for me. I LOVE that idea. OMG...my hubby is going to kill me. hahahaaa
Omg - me too!! I bought a fixer upper that I’m planning on converting to a dream home for my son and I, and those cabinets are exactly what I need to add character to my kitchen!
I live in a tiny bright modern open plan apartment and I am looking to have a new kitchen installed and I intend to go with white gloss units and dark green tiles on a feature wall. I want something that looks clean, modern and is easy to maintain. I have stainless steel appliances which I cannot in all honesty change so I am going with an easy option. I want practical and easy to look after.
I find that my upper cabinets are the ones that get dirty, all the kitchen grease/smoke from cooking, I guess. And, that wood slat kitchen cupboard is gorgeous, however, would be a nightmare to keep clean in a kitchen environment. I would use it on a feature wall in the office, LR, and BDRM away from the kitchen.
ROFL I have a kitchen with flat panel doors on the cabinets that were installed in 1960. They have been through three face-lifts over the years with the current color being hammered silver grey and black appliances. Thank you Rustoleum.
That said, i do find vids like this interesting and helpful in a weird way…. To keep me from accidentally buying something “ on trend”. 🤪 I got my haircut once and my brother said something about the “friends” hairstyle. I didn’t watch that show so had no idea I was being trendy. Lol! I got it cut immediately! I just hate being “ on trend” !
❌It all depends what your aim is for your kitchen. I designed my kitchen black and white with gold pulls, and glass knobs. I chose my white for the walls and the cabinets to be ULTRA PURE WHITE by BEHR, and for my black, I chose LIMOUSINE BLACK, also by BEHR. My kitchen is amazing, full of character, with a lot of fun textures, done glass doors, etc. Yes, my kitchen is vintage looking, classic, and elegant, and yet inviting - family friendly, and this look would never go out of style. I designed my entire house, and all of the cabinets, the lighting, flooring, doors, etc., to look timeless, with an old world look, and yet clean, and slightly minimal. In my city, which is a pretty young city, my house looks different from the cookie cutters, because I went with what I've been planning since I was 7 years old, and not what's trending. Do what feels good, you'll enjoy your home better!!!❌
I agree with Nancy…..wood slat cabinets would be a nightmare! You’d spend all day just getting the dust from between the slats. Loved all the other ideas though.
I kindly disagree, I am the type that cleans my mess when it happens. And then as long as you use the right dusting equipment, it shouldn't be bad at all. I would just do a few cabinets each week in a rotation and then the task would be less daunting. But also, with all of that being said...I do no frying or anything with oil in my kitchen so they would not get grease build up to contend with.
LOVE White Kitchens!!! They are bright (cherry) fresh and CLEAN looking! What can be more beautiful and classic than that? Classic beauty is the opposite of trendy. Trendy makes me think of people who jump on the bandwagon - they apparently are unable to rest in their own style. They merely mimic others... Also white is so classic it can be done with a modern, retro or even antique style. Not so for other colors on the pallet.
I style that I think is fun and timeless is the mission style kitchen. I like the warm natural wood cabinets with glass fronts. It also goes well with green accents say in the backsplash or accessories.
Ya, I'm just fine with white kitchens. I like the clean look. I bought a used Ikea kitchen in natural maple and I'm looking forward to using it in my latest airbnb reno
When searching for a home here in NY, I found that a lot of house flippers/contractors used the HD white cabinets and just used grey everywhere. Same design for the bathroom. I never chose those houses. If I’m thinking about remodeling or renovating a home while walking through then it’s not a good sign. I rather have white walls and wood cabinets, that can easily be repainted and sanded then stained.
Interesting the US kitchen trends seem to be 5 years behind Europe. The green and dual tone kitchens were really fashionable in the 2010s. And I saw this wooden kitchens were a big deal in Nordic countries a few years back but I imagine with the scandis wooden kitchens of all types are always in.
I have a very small kitchen, so white cabinets it is! That being said, my range is red (BlueStar - it's awesome!), and I have red accents throughout. Since I call this my body bag house (forever home), I can do pretty much what I want until I pass on and the kids decide what to do with it. That means I have subway tiles as my backsplash and a gray granite with "movement" as my countertop. It's attractive, and I think it's classic enough to stand the test of time. Despite the fact that it's tiny!
Thank you for this video, very inspiring! And it calms me a bit - we renovated a kitchen and were a bit bold with colour, cream and taupe cupboardd with handles in copper colour. We wanted a backsplash with a soft green colour and chose pastel green glass, unfortunately the green colour got lighter and stronger with the white wall behind, a bit too much… beginner‘s mistake. I still like it but I was a bit afraid of the reaction of other people… if colour gets more fashionable, all the better…
My kitchen goes in at the end of the month and I've gone for dark grey.. But the more I see it I wish I would have went for the chocolate brown but I've purposely gone for a material that will be easy to change when I'm ready.
I'm a kitchen designer in the UK. I'm finding that theres a trend for less wall units, open shelves, light to dark grey units, light granite and still solid wood is still popular if not a little less practical. I've seen alot of integrated and hidden worktops and units behind pull back full height sliding doors.
I had a trendy kitchen with shelves instead of cabinets and it was a horror! No place to put ( or hide) ANYTHING! Ripped out the trendy shelves and put in sleek, no hardware cabinets and it looks great and I have a place for almost everything!😂😂😂
I have a beautiful farm like red in my kitchen with black cabinets, and i wouldn't change for anything 🥰.i actually find my house unique,i did say when we moved that kitchen stays put most white goes, except the celling and the outside that would have been headache itself.
I have white cabinets with spashes of wood and I still like it after more then 15 years! The only thing I would like to update is the backsplash tiles.
White is very versatile, you can change it up in many ways by changing the decor. Sand colored ones are the new color of 2023. I think both colors are great, and incorporating rustic woods in it. But everyone has their own taste.
We picked out cabinets for a new kitchen. Base cabinets will be a stained maple, top in a light dove gray. We haven't chosen back splash or counter tops yet but soon.
As goes for my decor in all my rooms in my home, I try to follow outside nature. My lounge faces South so my walls are painted partly a pale green to cool things down a little. My kitchen faces North so is lemon to heat things up a bit. My bedrooms are painted mostly cool, restful colours to promote sleep etc, etc so think these factors definitely have to be taken into consideration. All the kitchens shown in my opinion to not reflect true family life. Little toddlers dashing about easily crash their wee heads on all those sharp edges of tables etc . Go with what makes you happy. White if you like living inside a white cloud all the time. Give me sunshine.
I think we're going to hit a maximalist trend pretty soon. Lots of color, texture, and patterns. Natural wood, bold gem tones. Basically the opposite of what we've been seeing.
I failed to mention that I am a professional decorator doing mostly condos in Florida. Dark cabinets do not get the high rotation rental money. Its cheerful and bright here. Up north dark is exoected.
I like to think about how I want to feel in my new kitchen- which is comfortable and not blinded by tons of white! I do prefer a warmer palette, with lighter to mid tones… cream to greige cabinets, with a random hutch in pale oak, and touches of warm bronze, warm satin brass, some velvet, stone and linen. We will have windows on 2 maybe 3 sides…. hence the need to tone down the LRV. 😘
Doing a small basement apartment with dark gray laminate floors, black appliances, dark gray cabinets . Possibly white or gray countertop (not orders yet) black and gray backsplash. Dark gray and light gray walls with black furniture. Sounds dark..yeah tell me about it lol
I wish you would do a segment on small 12x12 French Country Kitchens ..... Is it possible to use a 42" square Table with 4 Upholstered chairs with Queen Anne Legs in this small of a space?
