Here is another Macintosh se/30 case modification, this video is part one. This time I've installed an iPad 2 display , a raspberry Pi , and a Quada 605 logic-board in the cases. The unit can also be used as a media display via a USB 2 port on the rear.
If you are wondering why I just didn't install an emulator on the Pi to run the old Mac OS, let me state once again, emulators are not my cup of tea. They are slow, buggy, cannot use the floppy drive, and are a pain to configure for the network. The Quadra (LC 475) board makes it a great little 68LC040 setup.
You can select between the three (Macintosh 605, Raspberry Pi , or display) by using the toggle switch next to the main power switch on the rear. In fact, you must select one of the three options before turning on the main power, as the toggle switch is not DC rated. However it is really robust, and it will withstand selection between the Mac, Display, and Pi, when it is used, BEFORE (sorry for the capital letters) the main power switch is turned on.
The Raspberry Pi is a model 3b with WiFi. The Quadra board has 128mb of RAM, an Ethernet card, and is using a SCSI2SD with a SD card formatted as four 2gb SCSI drives. The Quadra System is 7.5.3, but I will be upgrading that to 8.1 shortly.
The system has three internal speakers, a pair of iMac G3 stereo speakers for the Raspberry Pi and Media Display, and the single original se/30 mono- speaker for the Quadra, but of course, the Quadra can still play stereo out of its port on the rear of the Mac when using external speakers.
Here is a list of the parts I used---
Parts I Made-
1. Power Supply base plate, 16 gauge sheet metal
2. Power supply mounting bracket, 2mm aluminum
3. SCSI2SD activity LED bracket, 2mm aluminum
4. Raspberry Pi mounting bracket, 16 gauge aluminum
5. VGA cable
6. IR sensor bracket, 2mm aluminum
Apple parts-
1. se/30 cases
2. se/30 chassis
3. se/30 Floppy Drive
4. se/30 Power supply housing
5. se/30 -5v circuit from the analog-board
6. se/30 speaker
7. Macintosh II Floppy Drive cable
8. Quadra 605 Logic-board
9. Quadra 605 power connector from the power supply
10. Quadra 605 bottom case that I cut the back plate from.
11. iMac G3 1st generation stereo speakers and cables
12. iMac G3 1st generation Hard Drive tray (for LCD driver-board bracket)
13. iPad 2 LCD, part number LP097X02, with third party driver-board.
Third party parts I purchased-
1. HDMI cable, 8"
2. USB 2.0 panel mount socket female
3. Micro USB cable for Pi power (spliced to power supply)
4. SilenX cooling fan 60mm 12v
5. Raspberry Pi 3 B
6. 2 x 5mm Male power connector (for LCD and fan power)
7. 5mm female power connector for fan power
8. 3 Pole, double throw, three position power switch AC rated at 15a 380VAC (selector switch, between the Mac, Media center, and R Pi) MUST USE THIS SWITCH BEFORE TURNING ON THE MAIN POWER
9. SCSI2SD version 5.1 with 8gb SD card
10. 32gb SD card for the Raspberry Pi
11. Seasonic Flex power supply 250w
12. VGA male connector
13. BMOW Wombat, for the keyboard, and use with the Quada and Raspberry Pi.
Thank you for stopping by, and please feel free to subscribe.
Have a great week
Billy

Thank you, I take it you like the project :) I've been restoring and repairing Apple computers for a very long time, as such, I've accumulated many extra cases because I've had to buy whole computers that were broken, just to harvest them for parts. I plan on doing many more modifications in the future. I can't wait for the new M1 chip Macs to start showing up at used prices, they are perfect for retrofitting into the older Apple desktop and laptop computer cases :)

lots of ingenuity...however, there is some sacrilegious about this - kind of like turning a SE/30 into a fish tank.
@BillyTheKidCENTURION
@BillyTheKidCENTURION 4 года назад
Thank you. I used to feel the same way, however I have stacks of SE, se/30, Classic, and Classic II logic-boards that have absolutely no chance of being saved because of exploding batteries, water damage, etc. That leaves a surplus of cases and I would rather modify them into something a bit more usable rather than turn them into fish tanks. I restore these also and have a very sizable older Apple products collection, I was going to open a small museum, but have given up on that.

This is amazing! Does anybody sell these kind of retrofit projects? The use of an iPad display is brilliant and the modifications to the case to make that work are blowing my mind. I wish I had one of these, my favorite would be a Mac 512 or plus case, but I also like the SE.
@BillyTheKidCENTURION
@BillyTheKidCENTURION 3 года назад
Hello, and thank you:) I don't believe anyone is selling these kinds of retrofits, but then they really are easy to perform. Finding 128k, 512k, and Mac SE cases is a bit harder, as they haven't suffered as much damage internally as the latter compact Macs, because they didn't use the small can capacitors. I do plan on doing several Mac Plus conversions in the future, as I have extra cases. I'm glad you enjoyed the video:)

Billy! F-in' spectacular! I just stumbled here so I was hoping you would suggest another one of your vids where you show your plastic "slurry" technique in action? Thanks, KS.
@BillyTheKidCENTURION
@BillyTheKidCENTURION 2 года назад
Hello:) I plan on doing a series shortly, but the slurry "technique" , and "plastic welding" are very well documented on youtube. For the slurry, it is simply a mix of plastic shavings from a component you are attempting to repair, with a certain amount of acetone. There is no set ratio, you can make it as thick or thin as you want, thicker means it dries faster but you have joining lines, thinner means you have less obvious joining lines, but a longer time to cure, and while the joining lines are less obvious, they are more prone to breaking in the future.

Incredible build! Lots of attention to detail! Did you have to put in an audio amp for the RPI3?
@BillyTheKidCENTURION
@BillyTheKidCENTURION 4 года назад
Hi, thank you:) But it's not nearly as neat as your modifications. For the audio, the LCD driver board has an amp built in, so I just put the Pi audio over the HDMI.

@BillyTheKidCENTURION
@BillyTheKidCENTURION 3 года назад
Hello and thank you:) It is actually very easy to do, the hardest part is soldering the VGA wires to the Mac logic-board, even then you don't need to remove the connector like I did, you can simply solder them to the connectors on the underside of the board. If your Mac Classic ever goes bad and you want to do something like this, you are in luck, because of the way the chassis is arranged you have room to do many more modifications than you can with the SE, and it's a better looking case:) I'm glad you enjoyed the video:)

I'm sorry, I don't understand what you're asking? Do you mean the small metal logo on the front of the case? If so, if you look at the follow up video to this one, the logo is there. I remove the logos when I clean the cases, because I don't want to risk removing any paint off of them.

How did you repair the front bezel? It looks like new!
@BillyTheKidCENTURION
@BillyTheKidCENTURION 3 года назад
Hi, thanks:) The damage to the bezel was on the lips where they came in contact with the CRT, and the CRT mounts were broken off. To install the iPad LCD I had to remove plastic off the lip area so I could get the full viewable area of the LCD, when I did that it removed any trace of the broken lip. For removing the case yellowing, I treated the cases with 50 volume Salon Care creme developer from Sally's beauty supply.

Impressive work. I'd be interested to know how you connected your iPad screen to the Raspberry Pi. Cheers!
@BillyTheKidCENTURION
@BillyTheKidCENTURION 4 года назад
Hello, and thank you:) the Quadra hooks to the VGA port on the LCD driver board, and the RPi connects to the HDMI port on the driver board. There is also an option for composite out. If you do this modification, make sure you have a driver board that is compatible with your model LCD. Apple used several different ones. While they should all be able to use the same driver board as they are interchangeable in the iPad, when using a third party board it has to be specific to that model LCD, or rather the driver does.
