I had the great fortune when I was 16 to be on a 747 within a few months of it's being put into service. I was flying Lufthansa from Boston to Frankfurt Au Main. This, of course, was back in the day when flying was fun, and something special.I asked the flight attendant if it might be possible to visit the flight deck at some point. "I don't think that should a problem. I'll talk to the Captain and when he's ready I'll come and get you. In the meantime why don't I take you to the front of the plane so you can ride in style."Not only did I get to sample 'the good life' free for the rest of the flight; I guess the drinking age disappears above 25,000 feet. She came back and escorted me to the flight deck. I got to see the sunrise from the cockpit of the biggest airplane ever. It was, and still is one of the high points of my life. After I left the flight deck, the flight attendant showed me back and put me in a first class seat. She offered me some champagne but told her I was only 16. "We're at 35,000 feet. I think it's safe." Ahh! By the way my top 4 favorite planes are the 747, the CV Coronado 990, the Constellation, and the Lear jet 24. I was treated like a king. I remember it as if it were yesterday! Thank you Lufthansa so much for making a treasured memory!

Back in the 70s in the Navy I got a ride in a 47 along with food and drinks galore. The Captain allowed me to check out the cockpit once we got up to cruise. Man those were the days. That flight just didn't last long enough.

Like astronauts ... the right stuff ... such a Pro! It is so satisfying to watch someone like this guy do his job. He's taking in EVERYTHING, glancing back and forth, watching, listening, etc. It's just cool to watch. I have my private pilot's license, but just single engine land and rotor craft add-on, but still ... 750,000lb + (depending on variation -100 to -800), it's incredible!

I got to fly a 747 simulator at the Pam Am school in the early 90's at MIA It was one of the most exciting things I ever got to do. I flew with a 747 pilot who let me sit in the captain's chair and we did takeoffs and landings on runway #9 at Miami Intl until I was exhausted, you really think you're flying the plane. what a rush.

I have only flown 747 in simulators but, strangely enough, have found them easier to fly than the smaller lighter birds. It seems to be all about preparation and even a short final is possible if well planned - just take the old Kai Tak runway for example with a hard right bank on final.

I realize this will need insider knowledge. To me as a layman it looked very normal. Also wondering how a short landing requires any more skill considering the abilities of the plane will be known very accurately and I'd assume be used to their best anyway. - Hit the runway early enough at the ideal speed to get nose down soon, then brakes and reverse thrust. - And it looked like there was still plenty of runway left for relaxed taxi.

They are only doing their job, nothing unusual here. And 2500 meter runway is not very short for a 747 with little fuel. 747s landed daily at Oslo, Fornebu in the eighties on its 2200meter runway. Weather perfect here, no sweat. And of course they are calm, if they weren't they should find another job. I admire them taking the responsibility flying all those passengers though.
