I have the extreme pleasure and privilege to have the opportunity to talk with Andrew DeCristofaro, Hollywood Supervising sound editor.
Not only is an a seasoned Hollywood audio professionals but one of the nicest guys you could hope to meet.
Andrew gives up precious family time to talk with us about what it is that goes in to and makes up a Hollywood movie soundtrack, what we hear and why.
Enjoy this brilliant discussion.

Excellent video and i always enjoy these kind of informative chats. I love the audio part of movies (maybe because i used to be a Audio Engineer) and especially Atmos so to hear people like Andrew talk about their work/passion is always so inspiring to listen to 🙌 Hopefully we can hear more from him in the future.

When they set the levels to 85db, what are the signal levels set to? -30dbfs?

You said it…grateful. Thank you! Any reason why I should consider 9.1.4 for my home cinema? Sounds like mostly the front-wide would not be used for movies?? OR would that be more for my up-mixer? I have a Denon x8500H

Great video. Such a shame to hear that we get a watered down experience still on physical media. As the highest quality readily available to a home user, most of which stay with physical for the best experience why is it still a lower level mix? We are the ones still keeping physical alive because we want the best we can get.

Actually you can get this high quality. If you have a Barco Residential Freya or Nerthus projector, along with a Bel Air server etc. you can access such higher content via DCP. Yes, its not cheap, but then neither is the gear you'll need to get the best out if it. And tbh, if you go this path along with products like Trinnov, MadVR, Wisdom Audio etc. you will really get the most out of such content (in reality all content). The reason why you are not getting this normally is that most product purchased for home cannot perform at this level. So they dial it down to better suit.

@@dreamav8161 I understand that. And understand the reasons why they initially made the decision. But enthusiasts are the only ones buying 4k disc's so why not reinstate the higher quality audio. The complaints about sound levels would be coming from those without a full HT setup, they have all now moved to streaming

so ,if my speakers are properly calibrated. then at -10db volume in avr ,would play the movie at 75db ?

No not necessarily

@chandan6119 10 месяцев назад
@@HomeTheatreEngineering ya ,it also depends on what volume the movie is mastered. But i want to know , generally at what volume level will we get 75db(95 db peak) in home?
@HomeTheatreEngineering
@HomeTheatreEngineering 10 месяцев назад
@@chandan6119 no idea. what is the sensitivity of your speakers and the amp power and distance from the speakers?
@chandan6119
@chandan6119 10 месяцев назад
@@HomeTheatreEngineering 91 is db sensitivity at 11 feet distance and around (60 watts per channel) denon 3700h.

It would play the movie at whatever it was recorded at. Playback levels from source is different than level matching. If you calibrate with a -30dBFS pink noise and level match to 75dB (or use a -20dBFS and level match to 85dB) it would be the same and correct...where it would play back the sosurce correctly at "max" on your AVR.

Id love to ask him..WHY..does every single electronic device have to make loud beeping sounds? Every phone , laptop, server, tablet , past and future , in Hollywood make stupid childish beeping noises? Drives me nuts. In real life no device past or future makes noise. Not laptops or consoles etc Only kids toys make beeping sounds 😅

I will ask him for you.. but I guess it comes down to the directors insisting on it and not the sound folks
