In this episode, Bart Ehrman and Megan Lewis look at women in the New Testament and the early church and answer questions like:
- What restrictions were place on women in the early church based on their sex?
- Does the New Testament give an accurate depiction of how women actually lived and functioned during the early church?
- And should the New Testament be used as a guide for women's participation in modern churches?

I'm just gonna tell you this and I hope you listen to me very carefully, before Jesus christ, woman wouldn't be able to sit in the same place in the church with men, But Jesus christ is the first who made woman his disciples and all others only allowed men, Jesus christ is the one who made woman have fair lives with men, if not from Jesus christ, woman would've been slaves to men still, but Jesus christ came to set the captives free, And people still say bad things about Christianity, Why don't people criticize other religions also for their ways of treating, Islam for example? They hit woman to death for not wearing hijab? Why don't people say nothing about that?

This has been wonderfully refreshing to watch and serves as a fascinating insight into Paul's actual teachings. It's fascinating to discover how the verses which refer to women's position in church and society as a whole were most probably not written by Paul himself! in the Bible, the HEART (Eve) is the woman taken out of Adam (mind) so they could come to KNOW each other face to face: The sex has nothing to do with woman because it is the HEART of both sexes that need to come together again now that the END of the EGO has come: woman=magnetic energy man=electrical energy that have to BALANCE together for the EXPERIENCE of WHOLENESS (HOLINESS): Sorry nobody told anybody???? Christianity and Judaism HYJACKED the truth on how to be FREE and made them into religions to control the masses so they would not get FREE: RE-LEGION (becoming legion/MANY, again and again): remaining in EXILE!!! the MEANS FOR CONNECTING TO HASHEM are within you and you don't need religion to become free but you do NEED a DESIRE FOR MESSIAH or the ANOINTING that is within you and must RISE TO CONNECT your consciousness to God (Hashem, Christ, Allah) whatever you call that higher consciousness: NO RELIGION is going to take you there because HASHEM is a JEALOUS God and will only reveal himself to INDIVIDUALS and NOT to religions in all fairness and justice, people need RELIGION till they find the DESIRE IN THEM for Messiah, just as it is written, when DESIRE COMES, it is a TREE OF LIFE: Even as deferring the HOPE for Messiah makes the heart sicker and sicker: Pro 13:12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life. if any of you watched THE LORD OF THE RINGS (I just got around to it a few weeks ago) the ring that makes everyone evil, the RING OF DESIRE TO CONTROL all other rings, is RELIGION: I saw it immediately: ONLY THE PURE IN HEART can handle religion without it destroying them: That ring had to be taken back to the FIRE in which it is forged by a pure heart (FROTO) because everyone else wants to CONTROL OTHERS with religion instead of helping them to be FREE of it and thereby free of EVIL that religion DEFINES but never overcomes, never ever ever: the DESIRE for Messiah is Elijah (his God is YAH) which resurrects your conscience (MOSES) that is drawn up and out of the water by the ANOINTING (Christ, Messiah, the OIL OF HANNUKKA that must rise in you to cleanse your heart (temple) that Hashem wants to live in: Everyone wants somebody else to do it: don't waste anymore time giving your attention to people (ALL RELIGIOUS LEADERS) who themselves are NOT ANOINTED so they can't really speak from that CONNECTION (dveikut, yichud) with Hashem: if any of you watched THE LORD OF THE RINGS (I just got around to it a few weeks ago) the ring that makes everyone evil, the RING OF DESIRE TO CONTROL all other rings, is RELIGION: I saw it immediately: ONLY THE PURE IN HEART can handle religion without it destroying them: That ring had to be taken back to the FIRE in which it is forged by a pure heart (FROTO) because everyone else wants to CONTROL OTHERS with religion instead of helping them to be FREE of it and thereby free of EVIL that religion DEFINES but never overcomes, never ever ever: just looked up Froto and it means "A RUB" and again, I see the ANOINTING that must be rubbed on the INSIDE of the head (SKULL, KETER) so the anointing can cover the earth (your brain) like the waters (LIVING WATERS is the anointing) cover the sea (subconscious): There is so much to get through by just learning how to RAISE THE OIL within, or raising MESSIAH IN YOU, that religion makes it seem you are doing something when you are spinning your wheels round and round, but not HIGHER AND HIGHER like Jacob's LADDER:

Very disappointed in this discussion: That the quote in Timothy was inaccurate, and that the quote (in that one letter) was incorrectly attributed to Paul were revelations of relevance to me. As some commenters here mentioned, I too may now be seeing Paul in a more appreciative light. However: 1) Hoped that the interview would argue more than just these two samples of suppression of women’s roles subsequent to Jesus’s death , i.e., make a comparison to biblical text that references Jesus’s actual interactions with women within his lifetime. Perhaps none of these gospels are reliable (?); but from my recollection, they, as recorded, seemed to reveal how much Jesus held women in high regard.). 2) I am a heterosexual woman who wishes to experience a paradigm where females in positions of power do not support surrendering to a discourse about their sexuality (i.e., the goddess Diana forfeits one breast so arrows for her bow will better fit her form, a prime minister is called “the Iron Maiden”, and more). I had no interest in recognizing the female pastor (“with a wife”) for her sexual preference. It was not only irrelevant information to me in the context of a conversation about women’s role in the Christian church, but in fact supported the same old interpretation of female power I’ve seen in the past: Prior to having pernission to be perceived as empowered, a woman must first give away or lose an intimate part of herself (her sexuality). The guys are allowed in the club without having to “show us their panties”; as adults, we know that is inappropriate and none of anyones business. (Don’t care if the woman pastor had a wife).

It was a power thing. When spinning and weaving was only for the family, it was women's work. When cloth became monetized, it became men's work. When computers were the size of rooms, their corporate owners hired women (after a quik IQ test) to program them. When computers were liberated and programmers became free agents paid for the actual economic value of their work, the programmers became almost entirely male. Women are permitted to take to the pulpit because too many men no longer see it as a source of authority, or power ot status or wealth.

While Mary M seems only to have been mentioned once in connection with his actual ministry, but if you don't count LISTS of names of the apostles, she's named more often than almost all the apostles in close connection with Christ: as travelling with him, financially supporting him, being at the crucifixion, burial and resurrection. Hello Diana, I’m glad that somebody finally replied to my inquiry. It seems that Dr. Ehrman chose to remain tight lipped on the matter. I understand that he is under terrific pressure from the powers that be to do a terminology switch from “Palestine” to “Israel”. He wants to do it quietly and without publicity because a lot of publicity may raise doubts about his academic credibility. If he caved in to manipulation on this matter we can’t be sure of the number of times he caved in previously. It seems that falsification of history hasn’t taken place only during the early history of Christianity but during our time and under our own eyes. Special interest groups have put their own spin on the historical narrative throughout history something which makes deciphering factual history an impossible task. One point I’ like to bring to your attention Diana is that Dr. Ehrman terminology switch took place long before the current war in Gaza and that he never claimed to be neutral on the Palestine issue.

Thanks for these clarifications! I do not understand what this thing about sexual orientation is, or why people are mysogenists. People (ALL people) are people first (and children of god) and that is the most important thing of all. Everyone deserves at least respect, better even love, if you find it in you. I am very happy to live where I live (Germany, by the way) and that same sex marriages are a very normal thing. People can talk openly about that at work (at least where I work). And I am happy for each person who finds personal happiness, no matter if in a relationship (and regardless of gender) or otherwise.

@ElinT13 this children of god idea has to be rethought. We share 98.7% or near of our dna with chimps, 50% with a blade of grass, etc. We are children of our ancestors that survived natural selection over the last milliion + years. Another idea, courtesy of Hubble, is that god created the world and then waited 13.7 billion years to demand that you worship him

I’m from the UK and in school we learned a little about the Romans, then it went to 19th century onwards with the wars etc. I was always asking about Ancient Greeks and China as I had been bought some books on Mythology and it’s just such a niche subject sadly. Luckily I ended up doing Philosophy as a degree, specialising in Eastern Thought. Then Mythology as a Masters Degree. It’s a crime I don’t think I even heard/read the word Mesopotamia until university!

Congratulations on this wonderful podcast. I have been learning a lot! On the subject of this podcast, I would like you to take a closer look at Jesus' relationship with women. Was Jesus effectively in favour of equality? Let's look at this passage in the gospel of Matthew 22:23-30 (the same account appears in Luke 20:27-36) 23 That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. 24 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for him. 25 Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother. 26 The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh. 27 Finally, the woman died. 28 Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?” 29 Jesus replied, “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. 30 At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. Why did Jesus miss this opportunity to denounce the status of women as men's property? Why did he not denounce the unjust way women were treated, passing from hand to hand, from husband to husband, with no right to decide how or with whom she wanted to live her life?

I feel like the role the Bible played in our patriarchal society and history, was very under played. The concept that main stream christianity is just Bible zealots taking the religion too far doesn't hold up for me. I wasn't raised overly religious but in church and even though we didn't agree with the Bible, we knew what it said about women, or homosexuality. We were taught to say, it's not us who judge, but God. This feels like apologetics a little bit.

Earnestly wondering here … does the repression of women in the church stem from a deeper disdain for physical existence (or self hatred), particularly on the part of men? I wonder if there’s a connection between Greek fleshy-icky feelings and women as the embodiment of this the fleshy-icky principle.

I think so too, but I think plenty can also be set at the feet of the influence of Judaism (and it's predecessors) and many contemporary cultures and societies in that corner of the world during the Bronze and early Iron ages. One need not look to hard in the writings of the old testament to see women were often thought of as unclean and subject to constant ritual purity requirements and repression.

Thank you, Jess and Doug. I wonder then how much of the Jewish piece Doug mentioned might be an import, perhaps from the Greeks or the Babylonians during their respective periods of dominating the Levant.

If you look at how trauma functions, you can see that sometimes people who have experienced abuse can go on to manifest the same abusive behavior towards others. My read on Paul is that he was very much in line with the grifting preachers we see today. Your Greg Lockes, your Robin Bullocks etc. etc. These people tend to be narcissistic and controlling, sometimes even violent. If we apply this abusive cult leader model to Paul it's not hard to see how the people who took up his torch, whoever they were, could have been emulating the same kinds of attitudes and behaviors he expressed. And, given that these types of cults tend to attract people who are already exploited or vulnerable in some capacity, it's not too much to imagine that they brought a lot of their own pre-existing baggage to this messed up dynamic. I see tell-tale signs of trauma all over the new testament. We'll never really have a full grasp on the reality of the situation back in the first century. Heck, we don't even know where or when Paul died nor who carried on his work after. There's a hundred year gap between Paul and the earliest church fathers. But I think we can and should do more than take these characters at face value.

The nuns in some cases have served the priests as they were his brothel and then be put under an oath of silence. The babies conceived could meet with a tragic end. All in all, why a woman would want to be Catholic is not by choice but being raised thinking this is the One True Church from childhood.
