Actually that's not true. To this very day African traditional religion is practiced along side Islam and often times integrated with it seamlessly. I've personally sat with the Donso (hunter society) in Mali as they cast divination using the same binary system as the Odu Ifa while reciting Quranic verses. Conversely I've sat with Babalawo in Nigeria who recite Quranic verses whenever the odu Otura Meiji appears because, as they explained, that's the odu that manifest Islam in the world. The traditional interaction with religion for traditional Africans was very similar to the traditional Chinese, it's fluid and pragmatic. If it works, we accept it and there's no need to reject what came before because it works as well.
