Had my Plaits for… ooh, a couple hours now, so I figured I’d tear myself from making awesome modulated noise and see what others are doing with it. I foresee very interesting times ahead…
Been using the free Plaits module on VCV Rack and love it! Such a cool wacky oscillator. That and Erica Synths Black Wave table oscillator are my current two favorite oscillators so far.
Chris Hoskins hi Chris, I’d say a lot of the plaits sounds don’t necessarily need a filter as they can go from soft to harsher sounds using the morph or harmonica controls. There are a few that benefit though, the wasp filter works well but I imagine most others would so I’d just go for the filter you generally like the sound of the most 👍🏻
Harry Vincent Okay thanks Harry, I am thinking of either going for the Wasp or Forbidden Planet currently. Love the sound of both of them and they aren’t expensive at all (especially the wasp). So much choice in the Eurorack world which is great, but often leads to hours of endless comparisons/research between different modules.
Harry Vincent Thanks so much Harry! I’m new to Eurorack and I’m currently building my first system so as you might imagine I’m full of questions and observations. Now that you said that and I compare that one with the Warps I see that it looks to be the very same layout as the Warps, just different panel and Knobs. Investigating clones had led me to finding out that some can be simple differences and some much more complex with very interesting histories. I know that some clones can be basically exact copies, except the knobs and panel. Others are completely rearranged from the original layout into a smaller HP Package. Even others do the same but add additional features and functionality over the original. For example Clouds has been very interesting. I knew I wanted one but that changed the more I investigated. The original Mutable Instruments Clouds is known to be a favorite among a lot of Eurorack owners. Mutable Instruments quit making that module. I wondered why would they quit making such a popular Modular, so I decided to ask the company. They were very honest and open and told me: “Clouds simply did not match the standards of audio quality, design and ease of use set by the rest of the Mutable Instruments' line. Mutable Instruments is known for its integrity, and continuing selling a module just because it is popular and brings money goes against my principles. Best, Émilie So rather then purchase a used one I investigated further and found that Clouds had several clones generated that were close and others that evolved into a much more powerful module. Not only did the hardware evolve, but so did the firmware. So I decided to purchase the newest most powerful version of it which I found to be the “Greyscale Supercell”. I can’t wait to put my system together and try it all out just as soon as I get this wound vacuum off my leg, LOL. Thanks again, James
I really love how versatile it is, which envelope module do you use? Would you recommend some? It sounds amazing those two. And the module with usb in what is it? You can play midi keyboard to send cc to modules?
Hi Matt, I've actually done videos on both of those topics. My envelope is on the far left, it's a frequency central looping envelope. It's a really good standard envelope with normal, bipolar and inverted outs plus it can be set to loop like an lfo and it has cv control over the overall time. It has linear and exponential modes aswell. If you have the cash then maths is even more versatile but this one is super cheap if you buy as a kit! and the module with the usb is a cvpal, it's a super cheap midi to cv converter. It's great but the reason it is cheap is will only work when connected to a computer. So to use a keyboard or sequencer with it you have to run both through a computer. I actually have something that I think will be more versatile on the way which I will be doing a video on very soon!
