This is another video of one of my DIY builds of a Mutable Instruments Eurorack Module - the Tides version 2014.
I mainly wanted to share the information, that the firmware upload to the chip is also possible via the process described by MI with a .wav file.
Initially, I did not know, that this is also possible, when using a Blue Pill Development Board.
So that makes the build and the update process easier, especially for uploading alternative firmwares.
For Tides (2014) there are at least 2 firmwares available:
Sheep (available at the MI GitHub page: pichenettes.gi...)
Parasite (available here: mqtthiqs.githu...)
Just as for my other clone modules, you find all information about the build on GitHub:
github.com/TOI...
Enjoy.

Great work here mate. Just a note - the panel gerber in the Tides github folder is actually the Frames panel gerber.

Thanks a lot. Stupid mistake. Fixed it.

Sounds so interesting. Added to the must build list 🤪

Dude, just discovered your channel but you have been absolutely smashing it with these builds! Cannot wait to build one of these, as well as your through-hole Yarns for myself! Keep up the great work! P.S: Do you happen to have a store selling your PCBs and/or kits?

Thanks a lot! Very kind. Indeed, I am planning to work on a few more clones. But I do not have any plan to sell PCBs. No time, this is just a hobby. But I want to share it, so others can do it, too. I think, we owe MI a lot to have made it all open source, and I do not want to make money out of it.

@@TOILmodular Nice! We do owe a ton to Emilie's work, and I'm really glad you're contributing back to the community with your renditions of these modules. My humble suggestion for a future clone would be Streams, it too is based on the STM32F103.

Nice work but why did you go for those SMT trannies and caps? They could of been through hole too 😉

Well, there are cost and practical reasons for that. Those 100nF bypass caps are needed all the time in any module. So it made sense to me to get the much cheaper SMDs in a larger number. Similar for the MMBT3904, which are also quite common in the designs. I also thought about switching to SMD for resistors. But to my surprise they are not cheaper than THT, and you would have to buy a lot for many different values. In terms of practicality, the SMDs are easier to desolder. I made a lot of mistakes in PCBs, so I frequently desolder many components for reuse. I also got used more and more to SMD soldering those parts, and they do not take so much space on the boards.

Hallo , I noticed that you renew the Gerber Files 2 months ago ,Is theres a problem with the previous PCB,s ? because I have a problem with my build , (I think my PCB comes from the previous Gerbers) , the mode button has no response ,and I have no output , maybe the PCB's are my problem ,or maybe my blue pills . I have ordered new blue pills , maybe this is my problem , or not , anyway , I checked everything several times , and everything should be OK pfff. I'm hopeless many thanks for your wonderful work. Grtz Didier

Hi Didier. Yes, there was an error in the previous version. But I do not think that it is related to your issue. You can quite easily fix that. U forgot to connect the switching connection of the input jacks for Clock, Freeze and Trigger to ground. You can just use a resistor leg to connect those connections to the ground pins of each jack. Still, I do not think that this would cause that there is no output at all. I would suggest that you exchange the op amp ICs and see if any of them is not working. Cheers, Daniel

Hi TOIL, I believe I have a successful build, however I cannot seem to enter calibration mode - holding the mode button for a second does not force all LED's on. The calibration process is covered on github, but not on this video. Any idea's ?

Hi Texy. Did you connect loose cables to the FM and Level inputs, as described in steps 2 and 3? Without that you cannot enter the calibration mode.

@@TOILmodular hi Yes I did. I tried multiple times but cannot get into cal mode at all. And I can’t find a video showing how to do it. I can’t imagine it’s anything other than holding the mode button for a second, even if no cables are connected at all?

I checked once more. But I could not find any reason, why you should not be able to access the calibration mode. I found another issue with the jacks for the Clock, Trigger and Freeze, which should all be normales to ground. I corrected the files on GitHub. You can easily fix it by bridging the sleeve and tip switch connections of those 3 jacks with a short wire. However, that is not related to your issue, as I also checked that myself. Maybe you can try and erase/flush the microcontroller once more.

@@TOILmodular I have a number of 64Kb blue pill modules, from a couple of sources. I can get all LED's on at the same time after pressing mode button for a few seconds, however the status of each LED is dependant on the mode and range before pressing ad holding the button, so not 100% sure it is in real cal mode. So when it is in cal mode, are all 3 LEDs fully on, or can they be flashing ?
