Part 1 of my Mutant Year Zero review. Covering the traditional RPG aspects of the game. The excellent artwork used in the review is from the core rule book. The cover art is from Ola Larsson and all interior art is by Reine Rosenberg.
The review is so big I had to break it into three parts!
- Part 2 covers the settlement building and meta-game aspects of play - • Mutant Year Zero, Sett...
- Part 3 will cover the design of the book itself.

I've run Tales from the Loop and played Alien so far. Each uses the Year Zero Engine, as you said. Though there are slight variations particular to each game, which seems to be something they do. I've enjoyed it quite a bit and will be going back to it. I'm interested in trying out Forbidden Lands and Twilight 2000 (which seems to be the most extreme variation on the Year Zero Engine so far).

Yah, I have heard good things about Forbidden Lands.

Does forbidden land use the same d6 dice pools?

@@PossumMedic, I haven't tried it yet, but I believe it's very similar. I think each game takes Mutant: Year Zero and then does its own slight variation on those rules. I believe Forbidden Lands also mixes in another die-type, like a D12 or something, but I don't know for sure and don't know how it's used if I'm right.

You are correct

Yah. It’s all some variation of the Year Zero Engine. Coriolis and Blade Runner also use it.

This is definitely a fun system. It took a little while for me to gather all the different 'species'
@FloofyPoofyFox
@FloofyPoofyFox 2 года назад
Species booklets. End of Days has Mutants Genlab Alpha has the Animal People Mechatron has robots Elysium gives us normal humans. It's quite fun.

It feels stressful as I read it. But I’m glad you like it. What’s your favorite of the other books for it?
@FloofyPoofyFox
@FloofyPoofyFox 2 года назад
@@DMTalesTTRPG Honestly, End Of Days and Genlab Alpha are the two books I most enjoy. Mechatron is controversial in my group mainly because... well... in a world where everyone is struggling to find enough food, water and shelter to survive, it really throws the game on its head when you no longer need, food, sleep, water... sex.. human needs go out the window with Mechatron and while I think it makes for interesting roleplay, as the GM, you'd need to bend the rules a bit to fit them in as fairly as possible once they stack up with everyone else. They are much stronger, and I tend to avoid using them as PCs, and use them mainly as NPCs. So... to give you the short answer, I enjoy Genlab Alpha the best, but I feel it's entirely incomplete without at LEAST End Of Days for the extra classes and mutant powers.

@@FloofyPoofyFox i think the intent was to have the game itself balance them out; DMs treat them as you would treat a gnoll or automaton in a more serious dnd game, not allowing them into settlements, giving them debuffs to all speech and charisma based checks, having NPCs just outright refuse to talk to the party when the mecha is in company or even going as far as to have them AoS. in essence, theyre strong in combat, but either completely useless or a detriment to the party outside of combat. Much like my alcoholic gnoll dragon-barbarian who had the knack of being literally too angry to die (he was downed at least 12 times before level 4, perks of having two rogues and a fighter wearing heavy armor who chose a musket as his primary)

"The Rot" in MYZ is radiation poisoning.

Which printing are you basing the review upon? I have just read 2nd printing and in that armor does not offset damage, it simply gives you dice to roll, any success (6) will cancel damage.
@DMTalesTTRPG
@DMTalesTTRPG 2 года назад
Hmm, you are right! I must have conflated that with another game I read. So you you are correct, the AR is the number of dice rolled not the automatic damage reduction. REALLY good catch.

I've got a couple little quick looks at Forbidden Lands on my channel, and yes you guys, it's really, really cool!! Thnx for this Free League game look, DM! 👊

Forbidden Lands is one I would like to look at. one thing I don’t like about Free League Games is that the game is tied to the setting, and I REALLY enjoy making my own.
@retrodmray

@@DMTalesTTRPG It would be cool if you did... my availability for doing it has greatly shrank recently. It's super easy to break Forbidden Lands away from the setting with minor alterations and run it in, let's say, some good old school modules or BFRPG stuff as Hexcrawls...per the BFRPG supplement on such. You should really check it out. 👍

For me the d6 dice pool kind of feels like it's for younger players. Fit Tales from the Loop perfectly but I don't know how much I'd like it for something grittier like this.

It fits rather well, actually. So much so that the thought of playing it stresses me out.

@@NefariousKoel Adding to that, Mutant: Year Zero is based on a much much older RPG simply called Mutant which was released in 1983. Mutant: Year Zero and that family act as prequels to the older RPG.

Ok, so this game is made like the Alien RPG, by a sadist that loves killing off characters slowly and painfully.

It’s the game which originated the engine that Alien RPG uses, and…yah, the grit and stress is real. Wouldn’t say it’s sadistic.
