A very good conversation. I've always loved esoteric notions and I'm currently re-reading Mystics and Mutants, such a great book...and I must concur on Dr Strange! The Mystic Maestro is probably my favourite character in the comic book world. I still have all my original comics that I collected in the 70s, 80s and 90s.....that sole character led me to so many other occult books and thoughts. I'd say that a character created by a Randian recluse and then later channeled by the likes Englehart etc was as much of an influence as Colin Wilson, Crowley, Blake or Thomas Taylor to me. I'll finish this all by saying that I really loved this conversation and subbed to your channel....Cheers! P.S. Blake and Kirby as two like minded visionaries, absolutely! Even when I first became aware of these two did I see the similarities. And a gentle nod to PKD...what a strange, yet compassionate individual, he was....ok, over and out!

Brilliant. I am particularly interested in the esoteric truth of the Scarlet Witch as she is quite a real being in our own reality and timeline too--Babalon (Whose merciful avatar might well be Magdalene, who shares a saints day with medieval St Wandrille, July 22, same as the heliacal rising of Sirius; both saints sacred colour is red, interestingly, and St Wandrille is a patron of architects...Magdalene, too, had a lover who was a superpowerful artificially created humanoid being, who was murdered by a power hungry tyrant...).

I will also add--Superman was also based in part on Moses. A baby destined for greatness, sent away to live with strangers of a different people when his culture was destroyed, becoming a great liberator. Many comic book writers and artists in the Golden Age were Jewish mystics speaking truth to power!

Interesting thoughts- thank you for sharing 😊 yes, I believe Dr Kripal mentions that the Spider-Man mask does bear a resemblance to the greys in the book. Also, the Superman stuff is spot-on, as well 😊

And regarding 'radioactive spider bites'--has one not noticed that the Spider-Man mask looks quite similar to the iconic 'Gray Alien' as featured on the cover of Communion? There is even a part in the (admittedly ridiculous, over-the-top) Chris Walken Communion film, wherein young Andrew Strieber screeches at what he says is a spider in a moment of foreshadowing, only to follow up with "You know, maybe it wasn't a spider." The 'radioactive spider bite' was Whitley's Visitors. Gray Genes create Jean Gray. X-traterrestrials created the X-Gene.

Great combination of topics. Thanks. I’d love to know if Dr Kipal or yourself are familiar with the Indian text the Katha Upanishad. Like many hindu myths it is available as a comic through Amar Chitra comics . The story of Nachiketa follows a boy who is sacrificed by his father, spends three days in the underworld, has a dialogue with Yama the god of death where is is granted three wishes. The boy asks about the true nature of the soul and is tested three times before being given an answer and returning from the jaws of death. They say the story is old, between Buddha and Plato perhaps but has motifs that turn up in to their places . I haven’t heard anyone comment on this story in comparison with other myths but I’d love to.

Thanks for watching Lauren. Indian religion and their texts are not my strong suit, but I can ask Dr Kripal. At the very least I'm sure he's familiar with the original text.

@@WABTpodcast thanks. It might align with his and your interests. If you google “Nachiketa comic” you can get a pdf through archive. I’ve been reading Lucian. So so funny. My four year old loves the tornado to the moon part.

Wrong. Neither Steve Ditko nor Stan Lee indulged in drugs of any sort. It's highly documented. Steve Ditko was an adherent to Objectivism and a staunch conservative.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Kerwin- you're quite correct in the case of Ditko and Objectivism. However, aside from creating the character, he stayed with DS rather briefly. Steve Englehart definitely indulged in psychedelics (as did Thanos creator Jim Starlin) and I'd argue he had more to do with doctor strange's formation. As JM pointed out as well, the character did resonate with the counterculture rather quickly. I think the point of our discussion was more that we are in a particular culture in which paranormal experiences havr to manifest in the pop culture language of the time. Ditko may have seen himself as a staunch Randian, but he was not immune to imbibing the occulture undercurrents of the day and age. And the mystical, visionary, and paranormal do not have to go hand-in-hand with imbibing substances.
