All his issues have been sorted out from 2018 and up on all their bikes. A motorcycle sitting in the crate for four years is ridiculous, I'm shocked he hasn't had more problems

What problems, sprag clutch? I had a 2014 Rivale, not the most reliable bike I have had (not too bad either really), but damn was it FUN! It was like sitting on a raging bull. Many hate on the throttle response, but i thought that it was the fun part 😅 Thinking about a Brutale RR 2018 onwards, but also thinking about the bulletproof MT-09 2021 or so, but Agusta is just more special i think 🤗

My 2015 Dragster RR has 31000km on it right now. I do all the servicing on the bike myself, so servicing costs are not an issue. Recently adjusted the valves, replaced the cam chain and some other things. Mostly labour so no big expense for me, but would have cost a fortune to have the shop do all of that. Had the sprag clutch replaced out of warranty but free of charge (goodwill by MV actually). They also upgraded the software to shorten the starting sequence to spare the new clutch. Make sure they did the software update on your bike! Also put in a lithium battery with the new sprag. A poor (BS) battery will kill the sprag in no time. Other than the sprag, there has been no major issues. Mostly maintenance and some small things like a temp sensor that gave up. They do require regular maintenance and good care, but my Dragster certainly hasn’t been unreliable. You can often get really good deals on MV’s and they run like nothing else on earth and if you should also happen to be somewhat mecanically inclined, I think they are a steal on the preowned market.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Totally agree that if you can do most or even some of the maintenance yourself, that really makes owning an MV cheaper and easier. They can be awesome bikes if you get a good one and there are some killer deals out there - if you want to take a chance on one.

8000 plus miles on my 2015 F3 800 and it's my track bike... yes, it's freaking awesome on track. Just to let everyone know, I've had zero problems. I do maintenence probably more often than most, but other than losing a bolt on track, having to order it and it taking 3 weeks to arrive... no problems, just orgasmic fun!

Speaking of potential buyers, I am very interested in getting a 2019 f3 800.....could you make a video or speak about the ergonomics of the bike since you ride it daily? I'm 6ft 3 tall and around 220lbs, but there are no videos that I can find about the ergonomics of it. How does it feel when you ride it, what do you like, what do you not like, is there any strain or discomfort anywhere when you are on it? Great videos by the way. I look forward to seeing more about your f3.

great video! thanks for sharing. i have a 2015 f3 800, at roughly 7000 miles now. i too bought it at a ridiculous price from a clueless dealer (was used, taken in on a trade). rode it on the road for one year, then made it my full time track bike, where i feel it really shines. fyi, shell 91 is ethanol free and what i exclusively use. have to say, i have had very few issues (except for a terribly rear brake) with my bike since ive had it (i was soooo worried when i bought it about the pitfalls), and i ride the living snot out of it on track, always hovering at rev limiter and pushing the brakes to their limits. such a fun machine. not the best out there, but so unique in the experience one gets from riding it. but yeah, it's been super reliable in my books.

AMV is the clutch issue a recurring thing? There’s a bunch of MVs around cheap but I’m afraid of parts availability and stuff. I have a Ducati monster too which has a bad rep for reliability but so far it’s been very reliable.
@amv_moto
@amv_moto 4 года назад
Sprag clutch problems are common with the F3. It helps if you keep it on a battery tender but I did that and mine still didn’t last 5k miles. I thought it only affected the older silver-engined bikes (2012-2016). But I got a message from someone with a black-engined 2017 bike that had his go out, so it looks like they haven’t fixed it on the newer bikes. It’s a great bike but keep the Honda for when you’re waiting for parts from MV.

Had about the same experience with my '13 F3 675 (including the wicked deal on one sitting at a dealership for years!). Had it for ~9000km until a move determined it was no longer viable :( Was lucking to not have the sprague clutch go on mine. I did have the horn cable break multiple times. During the 6000km service I had a new "performance" air filter installed. Unfortunately after putting everything back together the bike wouldn't start. Mechanic found that from the factory a cable to some air intake sensor was never hooked up, it just got pinched together in such a way that it worked. That was a big bill for labour. Only time the bike actually let me down was on a cold morning I got a very serious sounding error display about an exhaust valve. Once the day warmed up it was all good. Moral of the story, don't rely on the italians on a cold morning.

Neighbor also has an F3. Grey engine cover 🙀. Sick looking bike. He always has problems with the rear brake. It cuts out as brake fluid evaporates. Is that a known problem? He also had problems with the exhaust valves. Meanwhile I enjoy the triple sensation on my Triumph Street Triple. No problems whatsoever, and a great bike, but I must admit, that MV does look waaaaay better. As it is more of a purebred race bike and I am still a beginner, I don’t feel tempted to buy a MV…. But OMFG. These bikes are to drool over….. Brutale, Dragster etc, they all are like works of art.
@amv_moto

Yes, a weak rear brake is a known problem with the F3 because the reservoir is so close to the exhaust and that causes all kinds of problems. Yes, they really are beautiful bikes. As long as you have a back-up plan for when it goes down (since it can take a while to get parts) it's pretty cool own to one.

@pistonburner6448
@pistonburner6448 3 года назад
Europe has E5 fuel with ethanol, however of course E5 has much less ethanol content than E10. Also that marking only means the maximum ethanol content allowed, in reality there is anything from zero to the percentage maximum of ethanol in the fuel, usually far lower than the maximum. And not all bikes are affected by the ethanol. My unscientific and unverified feeling is that bikes in hot climates tend to be affected, and in more moderate climates practically no issues. Could be that black bikes suffer more too due to the colour soaking in the heat?

Hello, I'm from Germany, this year I got a 2017 mv agusta f3 800 with 5600km. Now it's about 10,000km, the only problem I have is that I lose brake pressure every couple of weeks, so I went to the dealer twice to bleed it. Otherwise, if you have been in the hot sun for a long time and you turn it on, it becomes very loud and rough, which sometimes sounds like it has no oil. otherwise I am absolutely satisfied. :) Sry for the bad englisch. ^^
@amv_moto
@amv_moto 4 года назад
Hello. That's great news. Glad to hear you haven't had many problems with your F3. I don't have a brake pressure problem but I've heard about it. I assume it's the rear brake? Some people think that MV designed the bike with the reservoir too close to the exhaust so the fluid heats up when the bike gets hot. Try wrapping a little heat shield around the reservoir and maybe that will fix the problem. Glad you're enjoying the bike. Bleib sicher und gesund.

I have the December 2014 model of the F3 800. I bought it at 2200 km (1350miles). The first thing I changed was the battery. It was really bad. I am now at 11500km (7150miles). I also had problems with the sprag clutch since ~6000km. It started difficult but after trying it at least 5 6 times it started. I waited for winter (to bring it to the dealer workshop) but the problem dissappeared out of nowhere. It has started without problems for the last ~2500km. (No problems with the sprag clutch anymore without doing anything) I also had a few small electrical problems that I could solve myself. My problem at the moment is the exhaust valve. I've long loved MVs, from a distance. While working at a BMW/Triumph dealer I did oil changes on a couple MVs. Oil changes were straightforward and the bikes were in decent shape otherwise but during post service test rides, wow did they convince me to never get one. The fueling was horrible, throttle response was nowhere near smooth and I've owned Aprilias since 2003 and my 03 especially has snatchy, on/off throttle response and modern MVs were way worse. Never own an MV as your only bike. If you can afford 2 bikes and HAVE to have an MV, have another bike as your main ride and save the MV for a weekend toy, just my opinion.
@amv_moto
@amv_moto 3 года назад
Luckily the fueling has gotten much better over the last few years, but I'd agree - only get an MV if you REALLY want one. But make sure you have another bike in the garage - because you'll need it when the MV is in the shop.

A boutique bike means you need back up transportation. Honda’s, Yamaha’s, parts and mechanics are everywhere because they build millions of bikes. Exotic cars you must wait for parts from Italy. Many more Ducati’s are built so waiting time for parts not as bad. All bikes are reliable especially compared to the 70’s-80’s with electronics.

When parking your F3, hook it up to a battery tender. Make sure your battery is charged at all times. Put E5 gasoline in (euro 98) in your tank. All should be fine. Definitely. I had my battery on a tender whenever I wasn’t riding it and the sprag clutch lasted to 4800 miles. I’ve heard of others lasting longer and some others failing earlier. Unfortunately, almost all gas in the US is 10% ethanol but definitely good advice to avoid ethanol if at all possible.

Nothing again and changed it around 13 000 km for an F3 800 RC of 2020. On this one have done 4 000 km with only rear light off. These are awsome bikes especially on track. Just need great care : heat it up before riding, heat it down when very hot (may be hot here in Paris and I ride monday to friday all year), charge it once a month... And accept a few issues in exchange for the right to ride an exclusive bike ! Btw, all has always been taken on guarantee. Ride safe !

True. I actually mentioned this in my “Sprag clutch fail” video. I didn’t get into it all again because I wanted to keep this video short. But I got a message from someone with a 2018 F3 whose sprag clutch just failed so maybe the improved design isn’t that much better.

Thanks for this bro I've been considering this or the Panigale V2 since i cant justify having my 2018 cbr1000rr on the street anymore, just not fun not not being able to bang through the gears without losing my license lol. I think i might go for the V2 just because better tech and I have more faith in Ducati since they have a bigger dealer network compared to MV and I still want a bike with the beautiful Italian looks. Still want an F3 though maybe for a second bike because i still think the F3 looks slightly better than the Panigale

Glad you enjoyed the video. Ha! Totally understand. As much as I'd love to have an S1000RR, I cannot justify having that much HP on the street. The 150ish HP of an F3 or V2 feels like the prefect amount for a street bike. I'd agree with everything you said. I think the F3 is a better looking bike, but the tech and dealer support is better with a Ducati. I'd get the Panigale. Hate to leave you with a cliffhanger but my next few videos will definitely help explain why I'd advise you to get the V2. Stay safe.

Sure, but a Volkswagen bike is the epitome of uncool in my opinion. Just because they have 'Italian looking design' on it doesn't change the Ducati from being a German Volkswagen product. Actually them faking that stuff and passing it off as 'genuine Italian passion' or whatever makes it even worse in my view. It's not as if you need to get maintenance on a bike that often. Or if you mean to keep the bike for a long time (so you don't need to show dealer service records to buyers) any good mechanic can do the servicing really. Well, some don't have the necessary tool for the rear hub. And at least I've had no problem sending it off to be serviced even though I do understand that some don't want the additional small cost.

I bought the same bike from the same dealer for the same price. I have about 7500 miles. Had the sprag clutch issue. Also replaced the battery with a lithium ion. It was fixed under warranty but it took almost 6 months, the dealer lost the part. after it was fixed there was no other problem.... yet. I come from Yamaha's. I do miss the reliability, but the bike is beautiful. It really is a toss up. If you ride a lot reliability is something to consider. But yes, $2000 in service costs in 5000 miles is expensive. Granted, a lot of the Euro brands had the tank expansion issue with their plastic tanks and the ethanol here in the U.S. but in 5k miles you should have had the cost of 2 oil changes and maybe a chain adjustment. I put 5k miles on my 2003 Tuono in the first 3 months owning it. The only issue I had was a fingerprint sized bubble in the clear coat on the front fairing and they replaced that under warranty. Didn't even notice the wait for the part but that was over the winter while I was stationed in Boston so I wasn't riding anyway but parts did take a while to get from Aprilia back then. After that though the 03 has a few recurring issues. The starter relays like to go out, the OEM especially, there's a Yamaha/Honda equivalent that last longer but every few years it'll need replacement and I've gone through a couple Speedo sensors. Steering head bearing at around 30k miles, clutch release bearing at around 35k. My 2012 V4 Tuono I bought used at a little over 9k miles on the clock and at 12k the stator fried itself, this is a somewhat common issue, a quick search and I found more than a dozen others with the same problem on the apriliaforum and Aprilia has an improved replacement stator but have not issued a recall on the original and at 12k miles it sounds like it needs a valve adjustment by the noise in the top end while my 2003 has never needed one in 40k miles and I've seen from others who've done 100k miles with the valve lash in spec (on the older bikes with the Rotax v-twin engines, the newer Piaggio V4s are more finicky, not sure about their v twins).

I hate to leave you with a cliffhanger but if you watch my next few videos - it'll be pretty clear why not. I've owned bikes from Honda, Yamaha, Triumph, Ducati and MV. Without a doubt, I think MV has the worst customer service. It's not even close. And it just leaves a sour taste in your mouth if you ever have any issues. Superveloce vs. V2? I like spending someone else's money! I'm not sure where in the world you are but here in the US, the Superveloce is $21k. A Ducati V4 is $22k. (V2 is $16.5k) The Superveloce looks cool but I would spend the extra grand and get the V4. The tech on that bike destroys the MV - wheelie control, slide control, electronic suspension, awesome display. And if something goes wrong, Ducati will undoubtably be quicker fixing the issue than MV. Just my $.02. Good luck with whatever you decide to get!

People keep repeating old information. Well, it keeps MV's cheaper for the rest of us so I guess I don't mind Kawasaki buyers living oblivious... The parts availability issue was during the time of the old owner of the company, when the company was basically bankrupt. Oh, and 3 weeks is not a catastrophically long time to wait for a part all things considering, though I do agree that they should have a spare parts warehouse in the USA and foot the bill for express delivery. Here in Europe I had to order a new maintenance booklet after my service center lost mine, and I got an immediate response from MV Agusta HQ and they sent it immediately, left the same day.

Glad you're enjoying the videos. Hopefully they're helpful to people thinking about getting an MV. I'm 5'11" (180cm) and 185lb (84 kg) and I'm comfortable on the bike but I've ridden sport bikes all my life so I'm very used to that kind of ride. I think it's comfortable because your weight is more evenly split between the bars, seat and pegs. My daily commute is about 30min each way and I'm not sore at all when I get off the bike. The longest one-way ride I've done is 2hrs and for the last 20 min my butt was getting a little sore (the seat is firm) and my right wrist was tingling but I think I'd feel the same from any modern sport bike. In Southern California, summers are HOT (>90F/32C) and you will feel the engine heat on your legs on the hottest days. But, again, I don't think the heat is any worse than any modern sport bike. Let me know if you have any other questions. I have a couple of interesting vids on the way.

Yes, you could have this as your first sport bike - although, to start, I'd probably recommend something Japanese (like an R6) because of the reliability factor. But if you really want to start with an F3 800 you can tone down the power by riding in "rain" mode and that'll make it pretty docile. Then change the mode as you gain confidence with the bike. Having the suspension tuned will make a big difference with the comfort of the ride. I have some experience with that because I used to club race but I do want to have Dave Moss tune the bike. He's down here in LA a few times/year doing suspension workshops and really knows what he's doing. Good luck with whatever you decide!

And the tank re-lining shouldn't be listed IMO because that is your own discretionary decision (and haven't MV improved the tank design/materials since??). Really people should expect to pay $850. Not $2065. That's the cost for the 5000 miles of use. And calling the experience expensive with such low expenses and after only paying $10392 for the purchase of that Italian mechanical art on wheels???

No, it really doesn't need to be charged if you don't use it but your sprag clutch will last much longer if your battery is fully charged - which is why most F3 riders will advise you to keep it on a charger whenever you're not riding it. The harder it has to work, the shorter it lasts. I'm sure you can go weeks without riding it and without keeping it on a charger, but I'd guess you'd be replacing your sprag clutch once/year if you do that. Btw, the newer black-engined bikes are supposed to have an improved sprag clutch design so maybe it's a little better but I've heard about those failing as well. Good luck with whatever you decide to get!

Whats worse in city riding, this or an old 748 or 916 ducati? Ty
@amv_moto
@amv_moto 3 года назад
Well I actually used to ride an old 748 so I can speak from experience. The F3 would win that one - no contest. The clutch on an F3 is lighter so it's easier in city traffic. A Ducati runs much hotter than an F3 - from the engine and from the underseat exhaust, so you bake on hot summer days. And an F3 has basic rider aids - traction control, selectable engine mapping (i.e. rain mode) and ABS (depending on the model) while an older Ducati has none of that.

what's the spot on the lowest exhaust at 3:44?
@amv_moto

A welding spot partly attaching the tip to the main canister. That camera angle is from under the bike so you don't see it during normal riding.

if the bike was sitting in a box for 4 years then thats why he had the sprag clutch problem. That has been covered by MV for a long time now. And I don't see how the tank paint work is a reliability issue - more a design issue. And any battery would be stuffed after siting there for so long. I managed to "kill" a Yuasa battery in 6 months simply because it was sitting in a box in my house waiting to be fitted whilst i was ill.

Don't believe everything said on the internet. 1. He didn't specify which bikes the sprag clutch issue _used to_ affect: only the old engine versions. First of all there was an update to the sprag clutch design years ago. Then there is the fact that there is a completely new clutch design on the new engine versions. 2. He didn't inform that there is a fix, failed sprag clutches get the updated part, so if a used bike you're looking at has had the sprag changed relatively recently then it shouldn't be an issue anymore. 3. Sprag clutches failing don't usually leave people stranded, practically never AFAIK. It shows symptoms _long_ before it fails. 4. Spare parts supply issues were a thing back in the day. The company was on the brink of bankruptcy under the previous owners. Now MV has had a new owner for years, they haven't had cash problems for years, and they've completed a complete overhaul to the parts supply system specifically to address that past issue. One known fault which has been dealt with under warranty, has been fixed, and the parts supply issue having also been fixed I'd say that it's totally incorrect to call MV Agustas unreliable based on that. (And his fault had possibly been caused by a poor quality battery installed in the first place.)
