This reaction was made during my live request show on Twitch. I went into this completely blind. I was still somehow able to understand there were melancholy tones to this song. It was a strange contrast of up-tempo rhythmic sections blended with sweeping dream-like melodies. Luckily the Otter Squad directed me to the music explanation video explaining the ideas behind this composition. You were right this song is about her two friends who were also kpop idols (jonghyun form shinee and sulli from fx) that sadly passed away from suicide in 2018-2019. The song talks about living in a dream like world where everyone is still happy.

I'm not sure but some IU fans are saying that the girl sliding down in the mountains represents her idol friend Sulli whom she lost to suicide and the dragon represents Jonghyun, another friend gone the same way. As you notice IU was inside the plane and she was looking at them with tears in her eyes.

I actually knew about her by watching the drama Bel Ami, i remember thinking “omg she’s so cute” so i looked it up and found out she was also a singer

Suga also produced the song, he has produced several songs for other Korean artists and won awards for them. Already this year he remixed Samsung’s theme song ‘Over the Horizon’, produced and co-wrote a song for Japanese singer Omi, and did a remix of BTS’s collaboration with Coldplay ‘My Universe’. If you haven’t already, I would recommend listening to the original version of My Universe, then Suga’s remix and listen to the difference. I would actually be interested to know which one you like better. You can find the videos for both on Coldplay’s YT channel.

I think it was such a touching collaboration he sent her a sample track she added vocal melodies and they co-wrote the lyrics together. She wrote this about her closest friends all kpop idols in different groups who died by suicide. Suga is so passionate about mental health and such a caring guy I loved how gently he produced this track. All his collabs he produces are so good and show his range as a musician. Both said how easy the collaboration was just a few days sending things back and forth. Just adore this song and MV.

You are correct that there is a contrast. IU lost 3 close friends in K-pop from suicide in quick succession. She is sad, but the machine lets her relive her memories with them, so that is the upbeat. Forever young in her memories.

It definitely is upbeat and sad at the same time! Which bts’ music does that often so maybe that’s part of the reason she chose suga to be on it with her? But it’s a layer of feelings she’s putting into this song … the loss of her friends, but deciding to leave the negative feelings about it and joy of believing that they’re finally out of pain but anger at the people that threw hate at them etc etc so the juxtaposition helps you feel all those feelings.

It's a sad song about left behind & struggling to cope with memories. Her best friends, 3 idols who committed suicide. She said her friends will remained forever young in her memories but she will go on living her live until the end. IU & Suga tackles issues about suicide that's considered tabboo in their culture. So sad 😔

I love IU 💜 she has such a good voice! She used to get alot of hate after jungkook from BTS said that his dream girl was IU, she got a ton of jealous people attacking her looks. Which is super unfair. But yeah, the boys are big fans of her, she is so good! I recommend checking out more of her

I only recently learned what it was about as well. Very sad. 😢 Also I’m watching an IU movie at the moment, My Mister. It’s pretty dark and polar opposite image from her pop persona. It’s called Eight cos she and Suga were both 28 in Korean years at the time.

You‘re right. She lost three of her closest friends by suicide. Jonghyun passed away Dec 2017, Sulli Oct 2019, Gohara Nov 2019. It was because of cyber bullying! At the end, when she asked: so are you happy now? With the sad smile she may has adressed her friends who finally found peace. While the blank face and the stare goes to the haters. I‘ll never understand why people can be so cruel.

I love this song, but like the pinned comment says, it's about such a heavy topic that I always end up feeling choked up when I listen to it :'( It's really interesting that we are able to feel the emotions so clearly for this song tbh bc like u said, it is very upbeat and seems very light-hearted, but I think there's just something in her voice that hints at the sadness and pain she feels. No idea how she did it. Never fails to amaze me.

She's a pretty good actress. I love her in the Kdrama called My Mister, she was amazing. Before I thought she was just an actress as that was where I was introduced about her and when I got into kpop I found out she's an amazing artist too

I don't you if you watch Korean shows at all but I recently dived into them (around 10 deep) and one of the first ones I saw was My Mister. It's one of the top 5 rated kdramas of all time and a masterpiece. IU delivers an Oscar-winning level of performance in her role. I thoroughly recommend it, it's the saddest but also most uplifting show I've ever seen.

yes IU. Korea's golden singer. She is an amazing actor and an amazing singer. she's been in this industry since she was 14 and now she is an established singer. Many idols also look up to her. She is so talented and an amazing person. if you wanna watch a kdrama of hers i reccomend hotel del luna.

@@anais3913 @Shelly S he is still a fan of her too for sure tho, he literally covered raindrop in in the soop episode 7 back in 2020. he sang her song lost child in his audition back even before he debuted which tells a lot, he is sincere and genuinely has been since. sadly tho because a few fans these days are immature... just a realistic assumption but he might be more low-key these days because he knows his rising status.

Well I guess it comes down to reading the lyrics while trying to take in the visuals then trying to break down the composition. Also all this was done live. Part of reacting is about taking your active thoughts and expressing them in real time. It’s not always smooth buts it’s always real. I try to keep things as authentic as possible.

Maybe it’s like BU from BTS? Because there is a story that is threaded thru out some of their MVs, the MV does not always mesh with the lyrics and meaning of the song. I find them very confusing.
