Your theory about being test or 'proto' molds was so close! The molds were never prototypes for the leasing companies. These molds were planned discs that didn't quite have the desired flight for MVP flagship brands. The Torpedo was a prototype for what eventually became the Reactor. Those that follow MINT will remember the "Alpha" went on a long hiatus. The original Alpha was not compatible with MVP's new production machines, so it got retired. Same reason why the AMP and Shock were retired, among other molds. Unfortunately, for the consumer, it's much better PR (and NDA compliance) for MINT to say the mold was "retooled" than "sorry, MVP can no longer make it". Overmold technology is not just about a top/bottom like other brands. Multiple discs share the same 'core' (Proxy & Envy, Signal & Relay, Pyro & Reactor, and so on). MVP can create a prototype, of a rim, then attach it to a current core. The injection points, where the overmold attaches, are left in the 'open' position to let the polymers flow to the edge (like Streamline). If it doesn't work out they lease that rim configuration. None of the leased discs share an overmold with flagship discs, only with each other. This is why none of the Remix, TSA, or MINT molds have embossing on the underside like the flagship brands. TSA has some putters with embossing, but those are not manufactured by MVP. Why is Remix a thing? Production time and material shelf life. The raw polymers can only sit so long to remain viable. MVP cannot waste machine time to produce 2000 discs when a leasing company calls. If there is an excess of raw material, over-runs can be made. Minor example: MVP produces 10,000 Torpedo in different plastics; Plasma, Neutron, and Proton. TSA doesn't need any 'Aura' but does need 'Ethereal', they pickup the Plasma and have them stamped "Pathfinder". MINT on the other hand doesn't need 'Apex' but does need 'Eternal' and 'Sublime' but the Plasma is already sold to TSA, so they take the Proton and stamp "Mustang". The last of the run (Neutron) is sold on Amazon as Remix "Torpedo". This is why you rarely see any of these companies restock all their plastics at the same time and why there is such long periods between runs. Why Amazon? Logistics (packaging, shipping, website, ordering, returns, etc.) Selling to a consumer cheap on Amazon yields nearly the same profit as selling a couple thousand, of a mold, to a leasing company. Video Idea: I think we would all love to see a comparison video of the Torpedo and all its variations (Torpedo, Mustang, Pathfinder, Addax V2, Harmony, Peace Train; if my memory is correct). Brand and visual bias are real. People will swear the molds are not the same because of 0.1cm variance on the PDGA specifications. SPOILER: The PDGA does not care and nothing will change unless molds are required to have convex embossing (concave embossing can be faked with hot stamps). Until this happens, arguing that the "Pathfinder" and the "Mustang" are not the same is as arbitrary as calling all "Destoyer" the same (Innova has multiple Destroyer molds which is why they are wildly inconsistent).
Looking at the PDGA approved discs, Remix just had just about their entire lineup approved March 27th, 2023. As a sales strategy, it’s incredibly smart. Have a line that is geared toward the first time consumers on Amazon with cheaper discs and as the consumer gets more into the sport, they will go toward the name brand products. Cool video! It's also possible that Remix represents MVP's excess capacity leftover after completing orders for ThoughtSpace / Mint / etc. If they added dedicated injection mold lines for their external contracts, it makes zero sense for those machines and molds to sit idle after production quotas have been met. I'd imagine that their production contracts have verbiage that molds used for Mint cannot be used to produce MVP branded discs to avoid obvious competition, so MVP makes a "budget" line that's intentionally obfuscated from being sold as an MVP product in order to keep their production investments from collecting dust.
Ronin is the Mint Alpha pretty sure, and the Spartan is the Trace. I had both and compared them and they were nearly identical. Battleship is probably the Bobcat. My guess is that most of these were like first run of the molds or basically their F2s. Also I'm still pretty convinced that Mint and TSA share molds. I have the goat and synapse in the same color plastic and you can't tell them apart and they fly the same. Same with the Grackle and Votum. I'll throw them in my car and show you one of these days.
@@robertc134 I thought so originally too, and it was confirmed by someone lol.. (i have two in same plastic, same color)r, but its so hard to tell them apart and they fly identical to me. See the other comments for the answer lol.
My wife got me a mystery box of 12 disc of Remix for Christmas. There wasn’t but one video about these discs. I was still really new to this sport and really didn’t know anything about remix. I still throw the Spartan. My favorites out of these molds would be the Torpedo, Eldritch and Battleship. I went out and bought other discs because at the time these were not PDGA approved. I was happy to find out that these recently made the list of approved discs. Props to you to finally being one of the first to review these discs. Good work my friend.
So glad to see this. I just got a 6 pack of "Sport Eldritch" discs. They are etherial Praxis for $60 which is my throwing and putting putter. Love them. I was so happy with them I picked up the Torpedo and Spartan in glow, and in they are great. Not quite eclipse 2.0 but quite close. Also the Ronin is money. Flies so smooth and straight even as a normally stable disc forehander. Before I even realized they were MVP I bought a Remix bag for $29, and honestly it's been perfect. Falls over sometimes, but otherwise super comfortable and perfectly holds all my discs and gear for CHEAP. I'm loving Remix stuff.
I had that same remix bag for the longest time. It began falling over too often for me so I passed it on to my dad. I can’t even count the amount of times I put it on my back and got stabbed by whatever debris it picked up when it fell over. 😂
Fun fact, the ronin was actually the first disc I ever bought other than the innova starter set. It’s a really good disc and great plastic, I found out it was produced by mvp and then it made sense to me. I wish I still had it because it had such a cool stamp and mine had a blue cosmic neutron type plastic but sadly I threw it into oblivion never to be seen again.
im guessing they mix up the tops and bottoms of different molds to make a new discs that they can sell under the remix name just to make some extra cash or use up plastic blends that they dont want..or they could be using mixed molds to test new plastic blends.
This is what I heard a while back. It took me a second to get the name but love that it literally says it. I have a friend that was very excited they are getting PDGA approved.
Another play not often thought about in high wind is throwing your layup with the disc upside down & let it slide up to basket with less chance to catch an edge or roll/ be blown away.
Which of those, if any would you bag? And, would you recommend them as a replacement to "beginners sets"? The weights and plastic seem like they could make it a better value. Thoughts?
I just picked up the Ronin and Goliath being sold at a tournament. Both in beautiful premium plastics. Ronin doesn't quite match my Votum, and plays more like my Innova Teebird3. Very nice disc so far. The goliath reminds me a bit of my TSA Synapse, has about the same stability and distance to it.
My dad just got a 3 disc set AND a bag for $28 shipped. All the base plastic starters are $30 now. These are now my go-to for new players. He ended up with plasma equivalent Ronin and Battleship, and a putter plastic Juggernaut (not DX, whatever the nicer putter plastics are). I’ve read the Ronin and Battleship are the Alpha and Bobcat. Solid, if not a bit too stable for a beginner, but they’ll be consistent discs that won’t beat in. Part of the problem with base plastic as a newbie who doesn’t know how discs fly yet is you’re not sure if it’s the disc changing stability or your form being off when the disc starts flipping
@@mickiesworkshop3490 they are just changing the number. It is a Trace. I have both and they are identical in shape, feel and flight. Literally land within feet of one another.
My theory is they are all mint/tsa molds but the plastic blends are off/not quite right, and I’m not really sure how I feel about the whole thing. Haven’t compared the pdga approval specs now that they exist though.
As for the Remix thing, don't 100% agree with the pinned comment, there is some bad information in there. But some of the test mold stuff makes sense as to what they are producing. As for the Amazon store stuff, this is a fun one. MVP Basically killed drop shipping from ALL its dealers, then started hard promoting "disc golf goods" on amazon secretly which was undercutting its dealers prices on baskets and stuff. Now, on one end, It's way easier to use amazon fulfillment, I get it. But when you screw your dealers over, it causes a whole different issue. Especially if you sell products out from under them. Cheaper and free shipping from amazon vs buying at your local dealer/store? That's pretty dirty stuff right there. It's the same thing with the Remix Discs, Best we can tell its seconds from runs. The prototype stuff seems plausible, but I doubt it for most of them. Most of MVP's side molds are not embossed, so easy re-sell. And for them to run remix as a company where they just waste plastic in bad molds to sell at 12 a piece? come on, that's about dumb. There is no access to Mint or TSA seconds as far as I'm aware. So... Those discs have to go somewhere. And... should be obvious with how many L2's that MVP sells that they are really good at making seconds. Of the 1000+ lab seconds I've handled, only like 5 of them have had actual flaws/issues too. Which is even more hilarious.
6 pack of torpedos on the way…..got two glows already they are most definitely pathfinders / mustangs but the plastic on a couple of them feel different to say protron or plasma. Liking the praxis spartan and eldritch the most the spartan is something else can probably play a lot of courses with just those three.
Be careful when you take your meter from the OB line when in circle 1. The meter has to be taken on a line perpendicular to the OB, the meter in a circle rule applies only outside C1.
interesting, can you point me to that rule in the PDGA rule book? I just looked at the out of bounds rules and there isn't any distinction for C1 or C2 that I saw
@@BodanzaDiscGolf , i've been warned during a round but i can't find it in the rule book either.. maybe it's is not up to date, the section 806.02 Out-of-Bounds in the rule book was last updated late 2021, before they changed the rules. They don't even mention the relief in a circle. Anyways gotta say the OB in C1 is rough ; ).
damn im a day later a dollar short. I just ordered the starter pack to film a review video lol. I guess i can give a perspective of a lower level player.
I think your right cause I can buy them through the link and it actually is the price ( adjusted for conversion) . But that’s very sad that people do that and I can’t find the original seller through my regular Amazon search
Honestly, can you slow it down just a notch? Watching your vids feels like a sugar/coffee rush not in a good way. Looks like your on coke all the time. Pace is a good thing.
