Thanks for a great video, I’m thinking of buying one of these cars. Had a Boxster previously which also had its hood draining issues you need to keep on top of.
I appreciate the video,I have used the trombone method but with a water hose ,like a lot of people I struggled trying to find the hole in the beginning The water hose worked but due to the insert I struggled I then used this method as a little annoying as it is I managed to remove half the pipe however, I found that with a little wire I was able to clear the blockage I then flushed it with the water hose which cleaned it ,it took me an hour to do the job ,but I did not remove the full covering behind the seat It would have been a lot more helpful if you could have shown us a bit more from the beginning. Thanks for the ideas
@@mrman9561 hi, I agree with you and a few others have said this. I am in the process of planning a full start to finish video, just been snowed under with work. I could make a short video on it but my car is not standard and has a roll bar so I can’t guide on plastics removal as I don’t have any in mine. So will have to borrow a car
I have a MX5 Roaster 2013 and I don't think I can use the Hood Drain Cleaning Brush method as it appears that a grill has been fitted at the top end of the draining hole stopping you from inserting a brush, unless you know how to remove this without breaking it.
@@flannel2699 sorry I can’t post pictures on here. I am going to try and find a standard mk3 and do a more detailed video on it using the feedback from this video
Make sure you watch the RU-vid link in the description to find out what and how you need to remove to access the drain. This video then makes it much clearer exactly how to fit and clean the drains. Much better than a trombone cleaner when yours is really blocked. Thanks for posting
Clean the pieces one by one and when I put them back I have a leak of water to the part where the seat belt is. It does not seal 100% the plastic piece vs. the metal of the bodywork and there it filters the water inside. How do I fix this problem?
Hi, My car had never had them touched in that area but had water leak (before stripping) after striping mine went away and it didn’t leak anymore. Might be worth double checking and I have heard the seals on the top and bottom prices can perish, at that point it’s find a solution or buy new parts, I would personally double check that the ends are flush with the bulkheads if that makes sense. The slightest twist and they wouldn’t be
Yes, I already had them off to do the roll bar, I will have to rebuild the car and the strip it to do a video on that. As my video was more a discussion about doing a full clean vs trombone cleaner. Wish someone was closer to me who has a mk3 then I could clean their roof drains to get the footage 🤔
@@FATPLEB if you start around the doors it’s easier so your scuff guards (for feet) and then the plastics that run up the side of the seat and seatbelt. Then removing the centre console. Then undo all the poppers and the tray should come off. I do have a time lapse of me doing the trim removal.
@@Paintppa1 I haven’t made it yet, I need a standard mk3 as mine is far from standard. Once I get someone to lend me a standard mk3 I will record the process
Hi. It’s really subjective. But I also didn’t have a recording of it before. But I can say it is really noticeable. If you can hear tyre and road noise from behind the hoops then this is most likely a cause.
I used the trombone cleaning method and ofcourse one of membrane became inverted causing roadnoise. This video should be seen by all mx5 nc owners before trying the trombone cleaner method. Thanks!
Yes. This is what I found to my amazement. I really need to do a full start to finish demo video at some point. Just my health isn’t the best at the moment
You remove them from the top, I did it from a half down roof position, but it will depend on you’re dexterity and hand size etc. if you need any more help feel free to send me an email, I think it’s public on here
@MrMazdaGuy Thank you for this video, i took my drains out and cleaned them and upon re-installing i found that they seem to leak in to the seat belt tensioner area (leak appears to be coming from above possibly from the point where the rubber black pipe connects to the drain box, assuming putting it back together as you have shows just by pushing it back on as flush as possible. Any idea what could be causing it to leak down into that area? also found my white plastic end part that exits out of the car, the seal is perished and causes water to drip down too inside the tensioner box, any help would be appreciated, thanks. Lloyd
Hmmm, curious. I haven’t had this to my knowledge. I know there is a foam seal on the bottom piece. It might not be sealing well? I may have to investigate when I do some more work on my trim at some point
Hey. I have been informed that the seal around the base of the roof and the chassis under the window can be a leak source that runs down into the back of the footwell. Also there is a tank above the drain hose that can clog. Just thought I would update you on what I have found incase you have the same problem.
Regarding the road noise you hint at in this video. Would you describe it as loud/droney enough to consider it annoying. I have an awful drone coming from over my left should at anymore than 40mph. Maybe this is the cause.
@@henrymarriott5636 I would make sure you plan extra time as it can be a bit if a pain. I do plan to do a full video on it once I can borrow a car to do it on
Thank you for taking the trouble to share this. Previously tried the trombone cleaner method, but really struggled to find the drain hole. Am having problems of excessive condensation inside my MX5 Mk3 - all carpets (inc. boot) are dry. The roof appears to be watertight. The car isn't kept in a garage and left on the drive in all the adverse elements ...perhaps that's an issue?
@@dss199 Thank you. I checked and fixed scuttle grommets several years ago as water was getting into the footwell - these have remained dry ever since. Will certainly double check roof drains. I'll probably have another go at trying to find the rear drain holes for the trombone cleaner .... such an awkward angle. Thanks again.
@@sengwellb1 you need to start with the kick plates and remove. Then remove door side trim and seatbelt covers. Then you can remove the roll bar hoops covers. Then remove the large back plastic that holds the fuel cap pull, you will need to remove centre console to do this. Once that is done it’s a case of removing the seatbelt and cover allowing you access to where my video starts. Need to borrow a mk3 before I can film the full procedure. Also get some dehumidifier boxes and put them front footwell and behind seats.
Just seen this today June 11th 2023. Like you I took out the drain tubes to clean. I found very little on this but was motivated by the fact i kept getting water in the cabin. Well that and the fact my good lady decided to push a trombone down them and the noise inside the cabin was bad. As you say its relatively easy. I also found that the rubber seals were stiff and wouldnt seal properly. I inverted the seals and fix to problem. Thanks for showing this video
@@dss199 I have a hard top, just fixed the rattling on the roof by simple adjustment of the roof catch. I am not a mechanic by any description i bet there are many MX5's out there playing a tune. Be good if you had a video on that and my next project is rattling windows !
Thanks, I plan to do a more in depth start to finish video, but as my car is not standard and has bits removed then it wouldn’t be as easy to follow. So I will need to borrow a car
