New Yorker here - It’s a nice apartment, great view and seems like great amenities but you could have definitely found a 1 bedroom in a quieter neighborhood (not in midtown) with sound proofed, double paned windows, for the same price. I think the folks who constructed your building did not put any effort/money into sound proofing the windows. Word of advice, while the views are nice for the famous buildings etc, it’s best to make your home area in NYC one that IS NOT in the touristy areas (midtown/close to 6th Ave) if possible. Try UES/UWS East Village and West Village. You’ll also be able to appreciate the views more when you’re not right under them.

Not all buildings have that noise issue. It depends on the building. Some luxury buildings in New York will be in the middle of midtown, but you will not know what’s going on outside because of the soundproofing. Regardless, your apartment and amenities are really nice!

Very interesting video from a charming young man! As a lifelong, now elderly New Yorker, I am glad to see an example of who rents this type of apartment -- a bright high-rise studio bigger than my (old-fashioned, VERY non-luxury) one-bedroom, with lovely amenities and amazing views -- and what you like and dislike about it. You've made the space very much your own, and I love the fact that you have room for your brothers to stay over and visit, not to mention your cool folding chair that turns into a ladder, and your under-table hammock! Hope you continue to enjoy NYC.😊

I lived and worked in NYC in my 20s (back in the late 90s). It was rough to make ends meet. I had a blast; it was a great place to have fun after work. I moved to Texas over 20 years ago. I live in a massive house on 6 acres. The mortgage is less than $4,000 a month. With hybrid and remote work as an option now, living in any city is a choice, not a requirement. I commute to the office nearly daily, but it's less than a 30-minute drive. Big city living isn't going to withstand the remote work paradigm shift. Certainly not with the current cost/value shown in this video.

If you have Alexa or Google Home, you can tell it to play sleep sounds and select one that can drown out other noises. I love the sound of a window fan. It's not too noisy where I live, but I'm a lighter sleeper. Try that so you'll sleep well without sound disruption. Good luck on your career. Dental health is very important to over-all body health.

I was born and raised in New York City (Manhattan). I currently live in a large 2 bedroom rent control apartment on the upper Westside in Manhattan. My monthly rent is $1,200 and there's a fire place in the living room. I have lived in the same apartment for almost 45 years and I will be here until I die. 😁The only time I live away from New York City, I was attending undergraduate school in Washington, DC. After graduation, I moved back home to New York City. I couldn't imagine trying to find a place to live now in New York City due to gentrification and high rents. I find young people today to be very adventurous. I would be afraid to leave my family moving to a foreign country for school or just to live. Your English is perfect and sounds like a native. How did you learn to speak English so well without an accent? You have a very nice apartment, however, I wouldn't pay $5,000 because I couldn't afford it. 🤣

It's nice but as someone in their 50's I would not want to be paying so much rent when I retire in a few years and I would want to own. If I was younger I might not feel this way but knowing what I know now if I could afford 5k a month rent (60k/year) I would sacrifice and get a room in an inexpensive part of town (Brooklyn?) and save every last penny for a down payment on something. In 4 years you could save $250k and buy a home in another state cash or close to it or have a nice down payment for somethin in NY. Buying cash in another state will get you rental income if you want it or the rent will pay the mortgage for you. That property will increase in value and you can retire there or sell it when you are ready. I own a 4 story brick in Brooklyn. Paid $850k 5 years ago. It brings in 3 rents at $2700 and 1 rent at $2000. My mortgage is $4,100, let's say $5,000 with water, gas, etc. That leaves me with $5,000 a month. Might not be for everyone but I am very happy with the flexibility it gives me.

For $5,000 a month, I would think you could rent a whole house. You’re paying for the view and location. I was born hard of hearing. While there are disadvantages, there’s a lot of advantages too. I can turn off my ears at night. I hear my dog whimpering when he wants outside and fireworks outside, as well as certain other louder sounds but for the most part I can sleep through anything. During the day, if noises are too loud or hurting my ears, I can turn off the aids. So noisy buildings would never be a problem at night. But watching TV or having conversations, I definitely see it being a problem.☺️

You decorated your apartment so cute! Great functional pieces. Nice and neat, too ❤. That's soooo much money though, yikes. You do have decent amenities but the noise and the 5k ugh. I have a 3bed/2bath here with a terrace and still feel like we don't get the greatest quality of life in NYC. Lol, I guess I should be grateful as I dont pay high rent (it's a co-op)🙏 Yay future periodontist! Oral/gum health is something we all need to take very seriously. Good luck in school, hope you ace it and have a fulfilling career. There are definitely so many scams and craziness here (lifelong NYer omg the things I've seen and heard). Thank you for sharing this. 😊

I pay 900$ a month for the studio apartment I live in right now, with a bigger kitchen and also equipped with a washer/dryer. Aint no way I'd ever pay this much money for my kitchen to be in my bedroom.

I was on the same boat when I lived in Madrid but I paid 800 for a huuggggeeee apartment. But the struggle is real out here in nyc. It’s a different world…

That is a great studio! I live in a studio that's under 350 sq ft LOL The old apartment buildings are the best!

An apartment like this costs about 35000 euros (in my country). and you actually own it. sure, its not in new york, but dude, 5k rent is beyond crazy. I've heard about US housing situation but it's still shoking.

I think sound rises, so it will be noisier if you’re living above the street.

Close the toilet lid after use! 🤣My best friend lives in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Best neighborhood in NYC. We would be happy to show you around, but it's far from Columbia University. Seems to me that there are great areas west of Broadway in the Columbia University area where your money would stretch further, like along Riverside Drive. Old buildings aren't going to have gyms or rooftops though.

A murphy bed would need a lot of effort setting up and moving if I was to move. Also, thank you! :)
