Potatoes can last a long time. If they start to wrinkle & grow buds, snip off the buds, & soak in cold water to firm them up. Even if they're not perfect looking doesn't mean they'll still taste imperfect after cooking it. Pan fried with coconut oil, onion, ground pepper, salt, & garlic powder is one of my favorite side dishes. :)

Great job! One thing i would do differently is buy things like oats and rice from the bulk section. Sometimes its less the 1/2 the price per pound and as you know every penny counts at the end.

Like someone else mentioned plan meals based on what food is in season and/or on sale. Also try to use the same food items for multiple meals but seasoned differently, i.e. coconut milk and ginger are good for both Asian and Caribbean meals. Also don't forget the frozen section. I highly recommend you check out Sprouts, I love that place. Extremely great deals all the time. And their double ad Wednesday is great for stocking up.

Hey Kevin, maybe you should consider the produce your buying and considering if they're in season or not. The most cost effective way to shop , I think, is by purchasing produce that are in season. I'm not sure avocados are in season, however, some might say they are year-round, not all types avocados are year round. i think maybe only the "Hass" ones are. but either way, maybe next time when you shop, put an emphasis on purchasing seasonal produce. Just a thought. None the less, great video! you looked tired at the end, i would be too. Grocery shopping is no joke. Take care Frank from Las Colinas, Irving, TX

I use TVP (Vegetable Protein) for my "meats" and flavor it with all the vegan spice packs at the local store. Also- I use tofu. I get you eat meat, so vegan options may turn you off. I recently turned vegan in March of this year, and not only is my budget less ($150 week for 4 people) but I feel better. I can say that I miss bacon and brats, but all the other fake meats taste great and cost less. Just something to consider. Also, I am not a fan of Pumpkin Spice stuff either- but after work I am finding a Jamba and getting a small one, you sold me!

I would use some more frozen vegetables when u can. They are usually cheaper unless the fresh is in season. sometimes the family packed packages are cheaper than getting directly from meat dept. If you have a Sprouts or Traders Joe's, I would shop there first, then go through Whole Foods for items they don't carry.
@j.jacobs8681
@j.jacobs8681 9 лет назад
I love whole foods, but their produce is such a rip off. I think buying seasonal produce is definitely one way to go. Also I think the cheapest day to shop at whole foods is Wednesday when they have the most of their sales. Also, I didn't see you with their coupon book which should be at the front of the store. Maybe buying frozen meat would be cheaper? Just some ideas! Personally I try to get all my produce from the farmer's market. For example, for $20 at the farmer's market I was able to get 2 eggplant, 1 huge sweet potato, 1 spaghetti squash, 1 acorn squash, 1 butternut squash, 8 small purple potatoes, 2 tomatoes, 6 scallop squash, 3 bell peppers, 2 cucumbers, 2 zucchinis, 3 large carrots, 1 onion, 2 apples, and 3 small broccoli heads and all of this was pesticide free. You just can't beat that.
@j.jacobs8681
@j.jacobs8681 9 лет назад
Also just because the produce is at whole foods does not mean it is GMO free- some of the produce they sell is that same quality that you would get at any other grocery store. Plus the produce I get from the farmer's market is the best tasting food. Plus it's great to support local farms and businesses. The farmers that I buy from are so incredibly kind and it feels great to support them and know that my produce only came from a farm about 2 hours away! I don't know what I'm going to do when November ends and farmer's markets end for awhile😟

I loooooved this video! And felt your budget pain! 😖 what I learned to do is buy produce that's on sale. I also get my meat from the butcher, it tends to be cheaper and fresher. Also, don't buy anything precut (the celery) because it's pricey! Buy the whole thing and cut it at home. Buying produce that's in season helps too! I like central market more too, MUCH better prices!

I love your creativity and passion for cooking. Outside of the bulk section, I rarely shop at WF. Costco and Aldi are my go to stores. At Costco I'm able to purchase 3# bags of organic mixed berries, grass fed beef, and organic chicken with the best pricing around. Go with a friend if you don't have a mini deep freezer to keep your food. Also, my Aldi has a ton of organic and non-gmo produce, as well as organic canned beans, broth, and canned tomatoes. They're owned by TJ's and recently committed to remove MSG, trans fats and synthetic colors from all of their exclusive brand products. If you have one near you, you should check them out!

This was an awesome eye opening challenge. I have never been in a Whole Foods, but this helped me to see how out of line their prices are. Trader Joe's and Sprouts seem much more reasonable. Seriously, who would shop there? If Kevin struggles to make this work, how is the average Joe gonna do it? I mean...

@blahhblah6635
@blahhblah6635 9 лет назад
The chicken tends to be more processed has tons of sodium, and comparing prices it is actually much more cheap to buy fresh chicken rather than can at least where I live. Also, you have more options vs. the can as far as meals go. Might work though. Couldn't hurt to look into it anyway right? Might be able to do things like rinse extra salt off or something?

This was really interesting. I've never had a Whole Foods order with that much stuff for $75. Well done. Can you do another video similar to this where you go to a normal grocery store (e.g. Kroger)? I'd be interested to see how low you can get the bill at a regular store. I found that my bill gets too high if I go to multiple places, so it's just Kroger for me every week. I do very well there price-wise.Sometimes I mix my recipes with half chicken breast and half thigh. It usually tastes as good as full thigh with almost half the fat.
