Down here in Florida when I used to ride ATVs in the summertime, I would jump in a creek or a canal and get soaking wet and then ride. That kept me good and cool.

Because of your videos in the past I actually invested in a few pieces of summer neckwear. For the past two summers now I either wear a shemagh, or a mesh net I fashioned into a neckerchief. They've just become part of my everyday clothing. When it really gets bad, I like to wear them as a veil under my hat so it drapes over the back of my neck and shoulders. Helps keep the sun off my neck and ears, and I've also learned it helps catch the breeze and circulate it around the back of my head. I've really been trying to talk other people into the concept. Its so simple, but its effective.

I certainly agree. Too hot here in Texas, we call that heat & humidity "Swamp Ass". More people die from heatstroke that any other weather related event. Homeless on sidewalks have to deal with 150+ degrees on concrete, pass out, get burnt, some die. Cotton saves lives in heat because it is absorbent, once wet radiative cooling does it's thing. Learn to find shade, drape a wet sheet or towel over head & shoulders, but do something.

Out here in California we always used to use cheese cloth in the same way. Cheese cloth was always available in the summer in the agricultural areas because farmers would use it to dry fruit in the sun. The cheese cloth would keep insects off the fruit as it dried. Large areas would have acres of fruit sliced and laid out to dry in the hot summer sun - it smelt great.

My wife and daughter went paddleboarding this week. She never came home late. But this time she was two hours past due. I got worried and called the police for help. About 30 minutes after they came, she called me and said the heat got to her. The policeman knew exactly what happened. He gave her advice. I questioned her about the heat before, but she said it wasn't all that bad. The policeman, however, told me the heat can hit you fast and hard. And out on the water, you don't have much of a chance. I watched many Blackie Thomas videos before, and I found this one today. I showed my wife, who agreed, and ordered a veil. Thanks for another great video. Practical advice as always.

I'm staying in with the A/C. I have a Mexican family that lives on my place. They've been with me since 1980. I had enlisted in the Army in 1979 and decided I needed somebody on my place while I was gone. We put them a big mobile home on it. They've been with me ever since. They can work circles around anything or anybody. I've been in my shop reloading ammo, doing other projects. Hell with that heat. I'm 60 now.Paid my dues over 34 years in the service.

I don't know if they're still made but I still use my Bug Tamer jackets , initially used for mosquitoes we found if you wet it in the creek, stream or ditch yeah it's like wearing an air conditioner. Right now in my area of S.C. heat index is 104° and this how I go fishing in the swamps walking creek banks. Now all have to be concerned with are the snakes !

Don't know how it works, but, it does. Have to admit, your net makes more sense and will last longer. I'm pale skinned and burn, blister, and burn again! We lived on the edge of a desert in the 50's and 60's, no refrigerator. We had a tin "safe", was a box, with sieve like holes around it, draped over it was a hessian sack, on which constant dripping water ran. It was known as a Coolgardie Cooler, and it kept our meat, butter and milk cold, same principle as your head cover.

Since we moved to Arizona to escape the oppressive humidity of the southeast, I have a whole new appreciation for evaporative cooling because it's so much more efficient here. While wearing a hat, essential for outdoor activities out here, I can pour a little water on it and it keeps me quite cool as the water evaporates quickly in the low humidity. We've got an adult kiddie pool as my wife calls it, 8 feet across and over 2 feet deep, on the back porch and we'll sit around it in the evening while it's still over 100 degrees, sipping a libation and watching the sun dip toward the horizon and be perfectly comfortable with just our feet in the water. When I take my feet out and let the dry air hit them and it's like I just stuck my feet in the refrigerator.

Excellent to know! I've tried quite a few products in this domain. Onewind sells evaporative cooling towels that work really well but they are scarf-sized. Looks less suspicious when walking in suburbia... I got the orange ones and it makes a nice fashion statement while wearing OD green. I also wear a polyester Buff under my hat as it absorbs the sweat from my head (which does help for cooling) and keeps bugs off my hair if I'm not wearing a hat. Dunking it in a cool creek every time I cross one makes a huge difference when hiking. As a bonus, I got the Tilley Hiker hat (seems discontinued now) which has an evaporative cooling insert in the top. Not the best for cooling, but it's strategic location makes it much easier to keep the hat on.

I know it is not always practical for backcountry use (although at 60 years old I do often accept the weight penalty to be comfortable during the peak summer) my best trick for staying cool is to always have an insulated bottle (or two) packed with ice at the start of the day. I can add water to it for amazing cold drinking, Orr even better sometimes, massively cool my skin. I experimented leaving two bottles with 28 cubes each in direct Florida sunlight about 95 actual degrees (one by itself and the other wrapped in Reflectix) After 80plus hours they both had a bit of ice and the melt was about 34 degrees. To my surprise Reflectix wrapped bottle only SLIGHTLY outperformed the unwrapped bottle! I am going to try filling some of the gaps in the cubes with crushed ice next to see what extra potential cooling I can get from one. On a daily basis, when I fill the bottle from my ice maker and then adding water as needed throughout the day, a bottle’s ice will last about 36 hours! To me it is a beer can sized (large can) instant relief cylinder. BTW I’m using Ozark Trail 24 oz. Cylinders with plain screw lids($9 bucks!) I saw this video and was excited because have a SRO veil arriving in the mail today. Thanks Blackie; perfect timing!

Swamp coolers are an amazing thing, but they do not tend to work as well in high humidity environments. And we use to do that same thing with an old cotton bath towel. Then there was the year my mom started making tubes out of cotton, and filling them with those crystals that are used in agriculture to make the dirt hold more water. And that works, but not as well as the air flow is reduced. But I use to do something similar with a hat that resembled the same hat worn by the French Foreign Legion, now I use a desert scarf.

That trick is much, much older - in ancient Near East like Egypt or Syria they had big clay pots, holding 100 gallons of water or more in their rooms. The water would soak the clay and slowly evaporate, cooling the whole room down. Today you can buy wine-coolers that work the same. Made of clay you put them in a bucket of water and let it soak some 15 minutes, then take it out, empty it and put a bottle of wine in it. Within 10 minutes or so the wine will be significantly cooler and stay that way for an hour or more, while water evaporates at the outside. In a bucket of water the bottle would get soaking wet and the water would start warming up immidiately. Even the german and british troops in WWII in Northern Africa used the same effect, they put their drinking water in bags of goat hide and hung them to the front of their vehicles - a small amount of water would soak through the leather and evaporate and give the soldiers a nice cool(er) drink. They stole the idea from the locals there, which used this trick for hundreds, if not thousands of years,

Face, ears, palms of your hands, and soles of your feet. These are called glabrous zones as they contain specialized vascular structures to facilitate heat loss. Applying cool and/or wet cloth helps facilitate the heat loss. But one word of caution, if someone is on the edge of heat stroke/exhaustion be very careful as accelerating cooling through these zones can actually trigger the body to start heating itself and exacerbate the issue. The trick is to not get the absolute coldest thing you can. If the water out of the stream is fridged, you might want to let it warm up a little first.

Since I don't have much hair, I always wear a hat or a cap. Mostly a hat in the summer sun. I will wad up a large wet cotton handkerchief and put in my hat. Wet enough that the water runs down my face. I try to find cool or cold water to use. When it is really hot, I soak my palm leaf straw hat in the water, then wear it. The US cavalry when they were transfered to the west would hit the nearest store and buy a straw hat and when on patrol try to do the same thing. Evaporative cooling works best in low humidity but still be a life saver where it is humid. In the west in the evening they would hang a wet wool blanket for the breeze to blow through and cool them.

Yep love using this trick in the hot dry seasons in Texas. However Blackie wouldn’t this be less effective in extremely humid weather as evaporate cooling is reduced as the air around you is almost as wet as the veil. Or would it still provide a small bit of relief?
@ahayseed654
@ahayseed654 Год назад
I would think it would help if there is a breeze of any kind. The humidity would just keep the cloth wet longer.

Here in the heart of the fire, Arizona. I put a wet bandana under a hat. Wear a wet shirt. It doesn't beat the heat here. Not much does for long. Aside from an air conditioned living room.
