Chypres in general are not my favourite category of perfumes, but I found one that is truly stunning. It is a oldie but a goodie, Paloma Picasso, Paloma Picasso. It feels a bit formal to me as though I should be covered in furs and dripping in diamonds if I wear it. I do not care, though. I wear it with sweat pants, t-shirts, and running shoes. 😄
@@user-lz6dm5lk9y I had never smelled that until about a year ago, when a woman at work was wearing it. A bit vintage, but lovely. Mostly oak moss, patchouli and a bit of rose (on her at least). I don’t know how many sprays she wears, but it radiates and fills a room.
@@mrspress8057 Yes, I was late to the party, too. I only discovered this fragrance for myself last year(?), but I read where a lot of perfume lovers mentioned it as a great oldie, and indeed it is. It is very nice for cold weather or at least chilly nighttime weather. I do not think I would wear it in Summer. Might wear it on cold Spring days, but I think it would be too much in the heat.
I love your intro where you say - 'for notes or tastes you don't like, there is something out there (you used jasmine) you will enjoy...It will be your gateway into that taste or scent.' I think this is totally true! I used to be turned off by indolic jasmine and oud (not surprising as those notes are challenging period) ...But, I kept giving fragrances a chance. I think Serge Lutens Filles de Joie and La Religieuse changed my mind on jasmine and Oud Satin Mood, Oud Bouquet and and Penhaligon's Bewitching Yasmine made me fall in love with Oud! I love chypres! From the beginning. Not all of them, but right away - some of my favs were chypres - I love rose so...I think rose and chypre kind go hand in hand. I love your list! Modern chypres can be so cool. Its so good to see you! Thank you for this awesome video and your fun stories! - xoxo
My favourite ever chypre is Mitsouko . It is hauntingly beautiful. Unfortunately, I found out a couple of years ago that it was the signature scent of someone I really really really don't like 😡 I was told this by their partner. I have never smelled it on them but. I saw a bottle in their house when visiting. I haven't worn it since but I will, again, now as this person is no longer in my orbit and even when they have been they have only ever smelled of malice, spite and vitriol.
You know I’m a fan of this channel because when this video popped up I was like “Whaaat? Tom doesn’t like chypres!” 😆 As you say, it really is journey. How amazing for a whole new world of loves to unexpectedly unfold.
Wonderful video. I love chypres so much. Miss Dior is a big favorite of mine. I wonder why you don’t like her, and if she might grow on you. Time will tell. I hate to be this kind of person, but you really do need a vintage of Miss Dior to get what it’s all about.
I tend to like chypres, but I haven’t done a deep dive in to the category. I think I’ve only smelled two of the frags you have listed here, Nightingale and Memoir Woman, and I need to revisit them both. Sisley Eau du Soir was the first real vintage/classic style chypres I ever fell for and my taste has been expanding to appreciate more of them, like Givenchy Ysatis and Frederic Malle Synthetic Jungle (which is obviously a modern fragrance, but it smells like a fairly classic chypre). I love Balmain de Balmain, but I think it’s discontinued. I recently sampled and fell head over heels for Oriza L. Legrand Relique D'Amour. I didn’t like Chloe Nomade at first but I fell for that too. Oh, and Ormonde Jayne Ormonde Woman is one of my top three favorite fragrances ever.
I luv oakmoss. I have Aromatics Elixir, by clinique. I work it at work. They can smell me n my funk everywhere i go. Its still a beast. And i dont care. I dig it. I also have Molinard's Chypre Charnel. I have paloma picasso too. 🤗 and Knowing by Estee lauder.
I love symphony and it’s so long lasting for a freshie but I need to smell that rhapsody now 😭. The lids are an absolute nightmare though so be careful not to catch the lid and knock it over.
I thought I hated roses until I tried Tauer’s Une Rose Chypree, have you tried it? It’s such a beautiful one! What you said about exploring notes is so true! Now I love roses and enjoy some more chypres too! Glad you’re back 😊
Yesterday I smelled Cardinal one of the new zoologistperfumes and it is a very green chypre! He is very interesting . I have several zoologists in my collection! I really likeNightingale, Memoire and Shangri la of Hiram green! In my RU-vid video top 2022 my favorite perfume is a chypre but with earthy and aquatic notes. It's Une Île Pluvieuse de Senyôko and in my opinion it's the most beautiful chypre I've felt on my skin! I had a huge crush on this masterpiece! Have a nice day! I also smell Harvest Mouse of zoologist ant it’s wonderful. Have a nice day
I don’t like oakmoss either and haven’t been able to tolerate it in Aromatics by Clique but I bought a small bottle anyway because it smells divine on a friend. Well it’s the most beautiful complex rose I’ve ever smelt - far better than Portrait of a Lady which has a strong note of ‘Vicks’ to me.
Hi Thomas! Missed you! Such a refreshing video. I don't know mist of the scents you talk about here since they are not available in my country, but you describe them so vividly that I can almost smell them:) My fav chypre is Soir de Lune by Sisley. Greetings from Argentina!
Oh oh, my favorite genre! Chypres! I guess you could say I grew up training my nose on them since I was a child. My Mom wore them and so did I. I'm a lot older than you are as well. I notice if I am sampling perfumes, the minute I come across a chypre I almost always sigh with joy and love it. I find them to be the most complex and tenacious fragrance group and if well blended it's almost hard to pick out notes. I have been trying to locate your Ruth Mastenbroek "Signature" perfume as I have heard you talk about it before and it's not available in the US I guess. Oh and yes, "up (or out) the wazoo is a legit saying here :o) oxJulia
Thomas, you beautiful creature!! I've been cheating on you with rockhounding and gemstone videos but your blue eyes and the word chypre sent me running back.😁🤗😃💋 I still love Nightingale mmmm. But the peasants with no taste still run screaming when I wear Mitsouko hahaha....now I need a sample of Rhapsody and it's all your fault.😬
Love the video! Is so good to see you are back 💛 I own Chypre palatin, Nightingale and Maai from your list. My new discovery is Shangri La ( the new one) and is so beautiful and comforting!
Thanks for inspiration. I looove Jean-Louis Scherrer EDT and Eau d´Iparie by L´occitane de Provence. Thought last one is reformulated, it´s worth to try.
I got half way through your video and had to run down to Nordstrom to smell Le Labo's Ylang and it's sooooo amazing. It's going on my full bottle to buy list. It's such a beautiful fragrance and I can't wait to get my nose on the others you recommend. I love chypres. xo
You had me at Nightingale. Great minds and all that, but i was also thinking of doing a video with all my chypres. A genre that surprised me in how much I'm taken with them. Nightingale is both pretty and powerful. I get so much pink sharpness and tangy vintage goodness xxx Hope you can get your hands on Rhapsody. I know that feeling of being haunted by an expensive fragrance, Hera from Papillon did the same to me, and i sold a few fragrances for it. Didn't look back 👍
Ive watched you from the start,,, no one understands my OBSESSION with smelly water . Its just a passion il keep forever.. Surprisingly I thought your collection would be bigger..your doing better than me....Love from AUSTRALIA ALWAYS ❤
Oh Thomas, nice to have you back and to see you all cheerful. I have to admit, I am not too sure what a chypre smells like. But I am not too keen on Nightingale by Zoologist (although it is my fave house and I own many many Zoo animals), it is only one of very few Zoo creations I don‘t like so much. Need to educate myself about chypres, and fougeres too. You‘d think with the size of my collection I should know this but my nose still needs some more training. Thanks for this. Might need to get some samples to educate myself.
Fragrance “gatekeepers” are disrespectful, in my opinion. I see it as a compliment! When people ask me, I tell them. But, I have of discontinued/ reformulated perfumes. That’s the only time I hesitate to tell someone what it is.
ooOPPPHH! I've been waiting for the video of this category! Wonderful list! Def gonna try that Zoologist and Louis Vuitton ones. Your journey is quite similar to mine, I couldn't wear those classic chypres earlier. But then all changed because of Chypre Extraordinaire by Roja! Goshhh that fruity floral Chypre is to die for!
Welcome to the Chypre fan club Thomas! I have three that you mentioned: Nightingale, Ylang 49 and Ubar. I would love to have Ruth Mastenbroek Signature, but there aren't currently any distributors in the U.S. I may pick up the Molinard, as the affordable option on this list.
Thanks Thomas, this was really informative! Can you think of any designer chypre fragrances we could sample in store to get an idea of this scent profile? Thank you 😍😍
Great video! Lots of niche options I didn't know. I'm most curious about the Ruth Maastenbroek one; a pineapple chypre sounds intriguing. I love chypres and my favourites are Chanel N°19, Chanel 31 Rue Cambon, Clinique Aromatics Elixir, L'Artisan Parfumeur's Voleur de Roses and when I'm in the mood for something soft and simple, I like Sarah Jessica Parker's Lovely.
I don't understand why some people are so afraid of sharing what they are wearing, it's a huge compliment when someone asks about your fragrances and we all know it'll smell differently because of our unique body chemistry. Anyway, thank you for your suggestions you got me curious and for sure I'll take my list next time I go perfume shopping 💙 Oh and by the way where do you sell your unwanted fragrances?
I did not even know it was a big deal. Maybe it depends on how you approach the person and asks? For me personally I always took as a compliment when asked and gladly shared
Maybe if you only have one or two perfumes and it is like a signature scent you might not want your friends or family to smell like you? I guess it’s different if you have a collection.. 😊
@wotwouldjudydo regardless of the amount of perfumes you have it'll always smell unique on you because of your body chemistry. I share my perfumes with my colleagues, they always come to check what I'm wearing i also carry decants with me. I even gave a few just because I thought they smelt better on them so sharing is not about how much you have, it's how much you care for others
@@e.r.7785 aww you’re nice. btw (you didn’t ask but) I’m wearing a weird and wonderful combination of vintage poison and zoologist bee for my afternoon walk
I was exactly the same with chypres: I started off not liking them, then I continued on my fragrance journey and kept coming across ones that I liked... and now I like a lot of the ones I didn't like in the beginning! Now it's one of my favourite scent groups. I love how the nose changes :) Ylang 49 is sublime. I love it so much. My favourite chypre is Ormonde Woman by Ormonde Jayne. p.s. which is your number 1 Diptyque? I think mine is L'Ombre Dans L'Eau.
I, too, now want Rhapsody. My goodness, I loved that story. I rarely ask someone what is the perfume they're wearing. I think I've done it about six times in my whole life, and three of them were to make sure I never bought it. LOL. Currently thinning out my 60 bottle collection to get some good stuff and thinking about selling Magie Noir, Lancome and Pavlova, Pavlova. Both chypre and I hardly wear them. My favorite is Femme by Rochas.
Nightingale is nice, but wow it’s loud, so much it almost gave me a headache…mind you this was from a tiny swipe from a dabber sample. In Plunge, is the lilac noticeable? I love Chypre Palatin, it’s sooo good. Difficult fragrance genre to pin down for sure. I’m not sure I have a full grasp on it yet. I think Amouage Beloved Woman feels a lot like a chypre, but Fragrantica says it’s a floral…whatever it is, it’s f’ing amazing.
Loooove your Videos ❤ I started my fragrance journey with heavy gourmand & powdery scents and now I adore more green, leathery, incensecy, weird scents. But Chypre is now my absolute preferred note, that changes my complete world ❤ My favourites are FIRST (Van Cleef & Arpels), NIGHTINGALE (Zoologist), CHOC (Pierre Cardin), FANTASQUE (Louis Feraud), ARPÈGE (Lanvin), YOURS TRULY (Maria Lux), MAAI (Bogue) & CHYPRE SIAM (Rogue Perfumery) 😊❤
STRANGERS Perfumes is absolutely cool! I love Prin Lomros, he made my signature: HÄXAN 🖤 Bertrand Duchaufour, by the way, is MY Perfumer 😂😂😂 I love nearly everything he did!
When you mentioned the materials and concentration used by Puredistance to explain the price, I think it's important to keep in mind unless they specify an exact percentage in the formula, you simply cannot trust a brand that says they use X material (usually an expensive natural, when in fact there are some synthetics more expensive than many naturals). It could very well be 0.01% to make the claim. The other thing about concentration, if the juice in a bottle costs say 2 dollars to make at 20% and you have 35% instead, that's still only 3.5 dollars. Keep in mind also they can advertise say, 40% but if the formula is 20% DPG that means you're effectively getting 32%, just as an example, since DPG is a solvent, odorless and doesn't have to be declared. I think the brand produce some pleasant fragrances but generally speaking, even among niche, they are not using formulas that justify more than 200 GBP per 100 ml or so.
Your funny! I love MDCI Invasion B. I love barbershop! YSL Rive Goshe omg love it and have it. Mmmm hot guy just getting a fresh haircut and shave omg lol!
Unfortunately there is always something else. I have always loved chypres, it seems. Mitsouko is my favourite scent, ever. Watch out for those gateway scents! You’ll find yourself collecting.
Hello, i love your reviews and the way you analyse the perfumes. Also have a similar taste. I am curious about your favorite tuberose fragrances. Thanks for sharing 😊
Yeah, the IFRA determined that oakmoss is only safe at like... a total of 1%, I think, of the entire composition? That's probably the event that changed the chypre world. I'm going to be honest and say I don't think I've sniffed a chypre - I have more experience with fourgere accords. That said, I don't think I really know *what* a chypre is? I mean, I know it's defined by citrus top notes, labdanum and a mossy base, but outside of that... eh. That said, I think I'd like chypres, if I tried the modern ones. I do like oakmoss and patchouli as notes, as well as labdanum and some citruses. Might challenge myself to specifically create a chypre for one of my collections - uh, one day. After I've taught myself trad perfumery, lol (using aroma chems and not just botanical extracts). Gimme ten years or so, my indie brand will exist. This a promise. PS: Thanks to you I now know how to properly pronounce chypre. I've been - mentally - either skipping over it or pronouncing it with a hard ch and the y like in my. Um. ^^;
BTW,,, please tell me you have discovered Ormande Jane London fragrance?.. im late to the party But my mind is blown...especially XIAN .Transports me to a different world😃
As I expected, the classic good old chypre masterpieces aren’t here. I’ve smelled most of the perfumes in this video and own a bunch of them and I can also say (as also said in the video) most of them are not true chypres.
