As a 15 year old kid in 1966, riding a Honda 350, a pal wanted to ride up to Gate's Pass. As a fairly new rider, I declined. He called me "chicken" but i was no dummy; "A man's got to know his limitations..." Never ride beyond your skill level! Now I'm 71. Love your videos and lessons!

Get SUPER familiar with your bike -sound it makes -size/weight -how it turns/corners -torque and speed -braking (abs or not) -practice picking up the bike -basically marry your bike -know how to clean and basic maintenance for your bike -you should be able to tell if something isn't right

What comes to mind when I think of the main things I've learned in riding: 1) Yeah point your nose where you want to go. (Look & Push) 2) Learn to turn, lean and fully understand counter-steering. Consciously practice it. 3) Constantly scan for road hazards and watch intersections especially close. 4) Watch your speed and anticipate the worst from car drivers. 5) I am invisible, the right of way don't mean squat. 6) Know how to stop your bike. Understand the dynamics of loading the front tire, etc... 7) Be able to react instantly and without thinking. Delay your emotions. Smooth & Focused. 8) Wear your gear and never drink.

Everything spot on. Number five: I've seen crash video after crash video where it seemed the biker was aiming right for the car that just cut him off. Usually in the videos the biker has the time and space to avoid by either changing lanes, slowing down, or swerving or a combination of those but seems to be targeted fixated and drives right into the car, then blames the driver.

@@derekwallace3871 Yes I see the same thing you just said. It seems as though hey I have the right of way, this can't be happening, I'm not budging or I need a lot more time to think about this? Sad.

@@barryweaver8833 Yeah like "I'm not going to let you cut me off..." Maybe it's this modern entitlement attitude. I've been driving for almost 41 years. I don't remember people being such lousy drivers back when I started. People had no problem slowing down and giving the right of way to another driver. Now it's bikes smashing into cars and cars smashing into cars and the whole road rage thing. People need to grow up.

One thing I discovered during the MSF course is that I had a natural preference for which side I could lean on. I am right handed, my right side is stronger... but I felt more confident leaning into left turns, I could lean more. I was more hesitant to lean into right turns, and as such, would run wider. You may find you face a similar issue, but the opposite... or not at all. Find your limits, then work to push them. When you lean, you're fighting against your instincts.

3:10 my bike has a kill switch on the kickstand, so i developed the habit to always turn the engine off by putting it down. By doing this i make sure I'll never forget the kickstand, because even wen i drive other people's bike i put the kickstand down and then, if it doesn't shut the engine down, i do it the conventional way.

Take it somewhere mildly hazardous. A month into riding, I geared up and found a bumpy, gravel-filled part of town that nobody drives through. Rode around slowly and got a feel for what inclement road conditions can do to my traction, balance, etc. and what I can do to counteract that. Lessons learned that afternoon have saved me a time or two.

I have an electric motorbike so i'd add to the fuel one - know how your battery react in different temperatures..Def agree the ATGAT, i had my motorcycle gloves, jacket and helmet before i even bought my bike. Also don't ride when angry or emotional, we need a lot of concentration on the road as there as far to many people who don't pay attention, if you're upset you are not fully paying attention.

Really hot weather, especially the south. For rides over 1 hour, mesh jacket. Get a under armour t shirt. Throughly soak it. Put it on, put on the mesh jacket. By the time you get to your destination tshirt will be dry. The cool shirt works like air conditioning. It works, honestly

I know a lot of people who have no gear too. In my brain, I just assumed full gear as part of the entry cost. Bell MX-9 Adventure helmet, leather palm Alpinestars gloves, riding jacket, impact vest, riding jeans with integrated pads, and Alpinestars Roam 2 boots. Cost me about $500 or so total. Bought the helmet and boots on close out, jacket through Facebook marketplace, and pants on a close out at my local dealer

DDFM Thanks for your informative videos. One is never too old or experienced to learn new tricks, or have a refresher on old ones. Here’s a couple of tips I have found useful: 1(a).Keep your eyes up and look far ahead. Don’t stare at your motorcycle’s gauges or the ground right in front of your motorcycle. Your peripheral vision will fill in the blanks. 1(b). Don’t fix your vision at one point. Scan around for hazards at different locations around you. 2. Your motorcycle is capable of leaning over A LOT more than you initially think it can in turns. Don’t be afraid to lean over a little further than you may be comfortable with in order to avoid an obstacle or tighten up a turn you may have entered too quickly and are going wide on. I hope other (new) riders find this useful. Have a safe and Happy New Year everyone!

When i was 16 a well experienced rider said to me, If you pay attention hard enough you wont enjoy ridding. Every car door, every moving object may be a threat to your path. The point i take is paying attention is infinite. You can always do better and any accident is your fault for not paying attention hard enough. Some crash situations are impossible to negate, as we all know. Some ride has there are no risk. I ride while reducing risk from anywhere it may appear. This may sound harsh but its the attitude that is the basis of learning how to pay attention. Having some sophistication in your thinking helps too. Some riders are just dumb asses who should not own motorcycles.. There are two kinds of people in the world. Those who change their lives towards betterment out of desire and others who do nothing but except their bad situation until an outside force compels them to change. My neighbor is all kind of busted up from an accident on a residential street where the speed limit is 30 and full of stop signs. Just makes me wonder!

Great video as always, thank you for doing this. I rode on 22psi in my front tire one day, didn't notice until halfway that I was compensating, definitely check any time you can, as a new rider it looked fine compared to a low car tire. One bad bump would have made for a very bad day.

25psi in my dirt bike tires (tubes), lol. but really, check bikes tires every day. every ride man. thats a big one. even my bike with tire pressure monitoring system doesnt read pressure for several blocks. bikes need a pre-flight check just like aircraft. why?. vibration. vibration is the enemy. high rpm. check fasteners once in awhile. I do, and recently found rear brake fluid reservoir, (which is over the back tire! doh!) mounting bolt loose as well as the reservoir cap!. I've lost a shift side foot peg mounting bolt on freeway (vibration!). find small fairing bolts loose all the time.

@dandanthefireman, One idea I'd love to see you do for a video or the podcast is the reality that "You don't need to buy a new bike... yet.". This is certainly not a dig on you or anyone else for that matter, but I constantly see and read new riders asking about good first bikes... almost always the suggestions, which are valid and usually excellent choices, are always new bikes... which to be fair, and my reason for the need for the video or podcast, new bikes are almost always what these new riders are asking about. My personal situation is likely not uncommon, I am married with 2 beautiful daughters (4 & 6yo), and when I decided to get into motorcycle riding, started with zero items... no bike, no gear, no training... initially I had intended to buy a new bike but quickly realized that just wasn't in the cards by a long shot... especially not even knowing if I would enjoy it or not, having no street experience at the time. Saving up is certainly an option as bikes in general are not super high dollar investments, but I opted to find a decent older bike, which allowed for purchase of gear as the primary focus... certainly more focused than if I was paying 200-500 a month on a new bike... the used bike also alleviated alot of the nervousness about dropping the bike. I know how nervous I was inside even just sitting on and balancing a bike at the local dealer. Looking back on this whole experience thus far, I am so glad I went this path, I found a 2001 Honda Shadow 750 ACE with just over 8k miles for $1800... then bough probably $700 -$800 in even entry level gear. So for well under a $3000 investment, I had all I needed to start down this path. I am about 2000 miles in since late September 2019, I still have not dropped my bike, but the several character spots it has from prior owners, took all the fear of ruining a large investment off of me so I could focus on getting riding locally and I especially noticed this when I first was practicing low speed maneuvers in a parking lot... Sorry to keep rambling, but I can't say enough how glad I am this is the path I chose, I'm sure someday I will purchase a different or new bike, but to learn and grow as a rider, to me there is nothing better than a low barrier to entry good used motorcycle while a new rider doesn't know what they don't know. Keep doing what you're doing Dan, you have helped me in countless ways and continue to help me every day I ride! Thanks!

When I started riding I started on dirt, and my step dad told me brakes aren’t the end all be all of avoiding accidents, collisions or dangerous situations. So I use a process to figure out if more brake or more gas is required. I’ve had incidents where if I applied brake I would have been hit, or hit someone but grabbed a hand full of throttle save my butt.

Depending on the bike and style of riding my range can be from 150 miles to the tank to over 275 miles. The best advice I got when I started dual sporting, point the front tire where you want to go and don’t worry about the back. The back will dance but as long as you control the front with a little grip you will be good.

Boots with traction your best tip. I've made mistakes with boots more than once. My best tip: Don't follow trucks of any kind closly. If they're not dropping gravel or unsecured items, they're generating turbulence that's unpleasant and dangerous. And, they destroy the view ahead. Pass or fall back.

After caging for 30 years, the first couple days on the bike I'd instinctively look over my left shoulder for the seat belt and after dismounting and walking away reach for the key fob to set the alarm...🤦‍♂️🤣🤣. Now after almost 18k on the bike, when I have to use my big ass SUV I find myself subconsciously planning on lane splitting as I approach intersections! Going to have some "splaining" to do when that happens. 🤷‍♂️

A thing I always do, and I'm new to motorcycling (1yr): if conditions are safe, I try to see the road as an obstacle course. I try to get around holes, manhole covers, paint marks, ... just to get more nimble on the bike and be prepared to swerve when I really have to, in order to not die. It also helps to pay more attention to the road's surface and condition

Sorry to hear that my friends grandson bought a kawaski 750 the msf course didnt teach him how to countersteer. Because of the bikes size he kept going wide on corners he sold it two months later. I told him to start with something smaller but the msf instructor advised him it was a perfect beginner bike. Try countersteering using both hands. Try it at about 45 to 50 mph on a straight empty road good luck. It took me a few thousand miles to get the hang of it. Its different on bigger bikes. Ive got over 200,000 miles racked up and im still learning stuff. When you think you know how to ride thats when you get cocky and end up in trouble.

Yup. Washington has a lot of the same laws as California, noise limits no underglow no aftermarket HIDs, strange you aren't required or have insurance though. Texas no helmet needed under low is cool lol what's a muffler, flashlight andduck tape? Headlight is good then. Must have insurance though

Additional tips- driving in the opposite side of the road than you are accustomed to like the UK, India etc. Just remember to keep on the same side of the road as the clutch. That will keep you from coming confused when you come to a roundabout.

Riding in the US or EU (I repeat over & over): “KEEP RIGHT / LOOK LEFT” Drive on the right and double check left at intersections as that’s where cross traffic will first come from. In UK, S. AFRICA, AUSTRALIA Etc. (mantra): “KEEP LEFT / LOOK RIGHT” Drive on the left and double check right at intersections.

I recently had an accident when turning & maybe this will help someone. I was making a right turn on a public road of three lanes. There was only 1 lane to turn right & I sold down to about 15-20 mph. Given it was Christmas Eve so be on your guard even more on Holidays. So I’m about 1/3 into my turn and a car suddenly starts overtaking me in my lane! He startled me & I crashed onto the street. I never touched the car & he never stopped. Guess he was in a big rush! Jerk! Anyhow my advice is to check your mirrors before & during a turn if possible because if I would’ve known he was going to pass me I might’ve been able to not crash! Good news was that since I was going slow my injuries were not bad!

1. Buy sport touring tires I you're mostly on the street, as they last longer, have better grip at cold temperatures, warm up quick, and are cheaper. In a pinch they can be used quite well for moderate trackdays. 2. Always have some sort of tankbag with fxiit or slime flat, along with a few tools and locktite. Most problems are just screws that you notice have come loose. 3. You need microfiber to clean the visor. 4. You should probably either buy many crushable washers or even drill and wire your oil drain plug. You can get away with not wiring other bolts, but not the oil drain plug. 5. Shop around for insurance with the precise engine size of your bike. There's two hundred dollars difference between a 599cc bike and a 600cc bike. 6. Don't brake hard in the center of the lane when coming to an intersection, as that's where cars drop their oil. 7. Stop being emotional or reactive in any way towards drivers. Try being a bicyclist for once and then you'll see how nice bikers have it. 8. Take trackdays several times per year. This probably helped me most of all because I never again had a "corner too fast" problem. After a track day, you'll swear you can plant your face into the asphalt from your lean angle.

dont slime tires, they're done after that. unless u replace anyways or dont trust plugs an would replace either way. 'slime' they do however make a very small plug an air compressor kit. but thats not dirt bikes most have tubes. I carry their kit but its plugs not liquid slime an a tiny air compressor. checking fasteners... Yes!. oil cap & oil pan easy replace with a safety-wire-able one. oil filter is only hand tight those come loose, thats under 'check fasteners', check for snugness. track days to learn to lean? not for most, but the lean lesson for new street bike riders is important, see alot of that going straight off corners afraid to lean. street corners like side roads have alot o dust an gravel dont try rossi lean angles there. if only everyne started out on minis then small dirt bikes they would learn everything they need for street. + a MSF course, of course!.

If you live in California and are considering purchasing a motorcycle from out-of-state, ensure it is 50-state emissions compliant OR has 7,500 miles or more. Manufacturers often have ways of denoting if it meets California ARB requirements. There's usually a sticker under the seat or otherwise on the frame that specifically states California. Some manufacturers signify this in the VIN or model number. For instance, Yamaha puts a "Y" at the 8th digit of the VIN and Kawasaki puts an "L" at the end of the model number. If someone knows how Suzuki denotes this, please let me know. This is important for registering the bike. If it isn't 50-state legal, then you may have serious issues getting it registered. If you owned the bike in another state and are moving to California, you should be fine. Don't be surprised though if they have you visit your closest CHP location for an inspection though.

Other drivers (MC or car) have a hard time judging your speed. When you are approaching an intersection or from behind the other driver's reasoning of how much room they have will be based on how fast they think you are going. This is why many of the MCs in these videos get cut off. The closure rate is often a lot higher than the other driver anticipates.

and if you lane split with another motorbike and he weaves in his lane as he is allowed to to miss pot holes and you pass in his lane there is a very high probability the two of you will collide and crash. so perhaps a good idea to not do it.

Always ride like you have your child as a baby on the back. If you do, you're going to pay attention to everything and notice everything even if you've ridden for years. It will help make better decisions in all situations. Even when people with no cares do this, that instinct really takes over and make better choices. People may not care about themselves but wouldn't want anything to happen to a kid and that will translate I promise

checking fasteners? u should be, an (especially for young) guys heres the rule if not torqueing to specific. snug. an a lil more. dont have to hold your breath an give it all u got like a bench press, snug an a 1/4 turn more is good. finesse not force. too easy to strip sh*t out trying to get it ultra-tight. for things like axles, or handlebars, an many other critical if loose items.. USE a Tq wrench!. mandatory!. becos the torque formula. longer the lever more force it exudes. so a t-handle or any extension increases your force (torque) so take it easy. this goes for torque wrenching stuff too. use an extension?., u need to use the Tq formula to refigure Tq. look it up. but do- do check fasteners, oil drain plug, oil filler cap, oil filter, an just everything on bike. take your t handle set an go around check- first time youll find loose sh*t, then youll be fully onboard with regular checks.
