My 13 year old writings were bonkers: my millennial nerd childhood

I first created my fantasy world in 1993 as a tween. Did I ever think I would still be writing about this place 30 years later? Probably not or I would have made it less ridiculous... The embarrassing tour through my earliest notebooks continues with 1995, with heavy influences from X-Men and Final Fantasy VI. It's very nerdy and perhaps some of you will relate to your own adolescent obsessions!

This inspired me to reread my first "actual" story from when i was about 11 and my favorite part is "The dark blue dragon with some white scales is Starflake.” She pointed to a small dark blue dragon with her tail. Some of her scales were white Hmm. Something tells me she's a dark blue dragon with some white scales 😭

Are you sure? Maybe should mention it a third time just in case! LOL very relatable. (Sounds like a cool color scheme though!)

I realize they aren’t your target demographic, but my unschooling girls(ages 6-15) can’t get enough of your worldbuilding content/old notebooks. I think we’ve watched all of them now. One of my daughters filled several pages of a notebook with ideas last week after watching your first old notebooks video. I can see the influence of your art and notation style. It reminds me of the author visits from my public school days, when we were assigned to complete a project related to the author’s work 😅I’m going to have to grab some of your books for them. Suggestions for any appropriate for, say, an 11 year old?

This is just the best!! That is so sweet and when I think how much I was influenced by other creators it feels so full circle. My YA with Bloomsbury should all be fine for them: Magic Under Glass, Magic Under Stone, and Between the Sea and Sky. I also recently put the YA I wrote set in this world that I illustrated with comics and such, The Vengeful Half, back on sale because a few people wanted it. The only problem with that one is that I intended it to be four books long and only wrote two so there is some unfinished business, but they might enjoy it for the art and connecting things in the videos to how they developed later. www.amazon.com/Vengeful-Half-Hidden-Lands/dp/0692641947

These are so relatable. Especially the "I'm going through it so I'm gonna make sure my characters SUFFER to a comical degree" thing.

As a teen I wrote a Story with a frlend. Write a chapter, hand over the book, the other one writes one, gave back the book. After three handovers, everybody our heroine (a blind seer orphan) had ever known was wiped out, every home she every home she ever had bunrnt down. We ran out of Story then.

Omg I love this so much! I wish I had my old notebooks. I was only able to save 2 of them from when I was the same age 🤣 I was a 13-year-old trying to write about adult romance with zero experience hahaha

Best healing wishes to your boss. I hope he gets better soon. Thinking back to my early writing days, I can honestly say that my younger self was definitely working through some things 😅, but then I suppose that’s part of why we write.

I LOVE that you make these. Please do more of these kinds of videos. I'm only seventeen at the moment, but I went through a phase last year where I physically destroyed every old piece of writing/outlining/character creation that I could find from a few years back. There's still a bunch left, but probably 50-70 pages (all of the world/character building I had for this one wip) is gone. I regret that so much now, and it's so, so precious and amazing that you have all of this from when you were a teen. I wish I'd have saved more of mine and I'm grateful for the stories I have left.

Thank you so much for making this video. I've had a bit of an emotionally exhausting week and really needed a good laugh. The history of fashion section had me cackling wildly and I feel like a new woman. 🤣 The part about all the stuff in the wife's hair had me going, but then it just kept getting better and better. I had to rewind the video several times because I was laughing so much, I couldn't hear what you said next. The devotion of the husband, the party where she just sits there, unable to move, and especially the part at the end where he "hoses her down". I will be chuckling about this all day. I want to be clear, I am definitely laughing *with* you. From my perspective, this stuff isn't embarrassing, it's relatable. This video was exactly the medicine I needed today. ❤ I also had my first taste of night life in a 90's coffee shop that was open really late and had live music. The place was filled with cigarette smoke, the music was too loud, and we put sugar and powdered non-dairy creamer in our espressos because we thought that was what we were supposed to do. I felt extremely cool as a teen, sipping my franken-latte and hanging out with my nerdy friends. I had this sort of gothic velvet green dress that I liked to wear to that place--sometimes topped with a flowy, floor-length lace vest. Oh, the 90's.

That's really sweet, I'm glad it made you laugh as hard as it did me. (If you haven't watched the first childhood notebooks video yet, save it for another bad day, the "rules for the Grim Reaper" are right up there with the fashion history...) Yes, the CIGARETTE SMOKE. Man we kids came home smelling like ash trays with burning throats. Somehow in my memories the place was always blasting Iggy and the Stooges until the live music started, although I'm not sure they ever actually were, it just had that specific vibe. And you could order a huge pizza next door and bring it until about midnight. Your outfit sounds WAY cooler than mine was back then. Oh, to find a green velvet 90s goth dress in the thrift store now...!

@segaboy9894

@lidiyafoxgloveauthor Hahaha. Some people purposefully put certain books on display to get the attention of a certain crowd. For instance, one book-tuber I watch has his copy of Infinite Jest prominently displayed, which is a dog whistle for the hyper-intellectuals. Or, perhaps it's on display to make himself appear hyper-intellectual. Love your videos BTW.

Ah, delving into past work is always an adventure. I have several first pages of different stories that never got touched again, and many sketches of exactly the same outfits and hairstyles with minor variations between the iterations of each idea, but most of my old stuff is poetry. Some I don’t think I could surpass even now, some I see has come back to me in different forms over time, and some make me die inside a little upon rereading. So, exactly what one hopes for hahaha Very fun to journey with someone else in these videos!
