What’s weird Michael, is that unless there is a contract with Bluenote you would have expected more Tone Poet and Classic series reissues to have come directly from the Music Matters catalog to have come out., because these are the titles that everyone wants. You would have also thought the Tone Poet and Classic series would have cannibalized the Music Matter sales and values, but just the opposite has occurred. That John Coltrane Blue Train will be huge when it comes out and I will buy two copies. I have that those Bob Hutchinson albums one later pressing and the Wahoo might be an original that took me a 3-4 years to get. The Coltrane Blue Train, I have a second or third pressing, it’s a NewYork Label. A lot of Coltrane’s stuff that I have is original, like his Love Supreme (the stereo and mono vesions. This is one of the most fun hobbies to be in for us older guys, it’s interesting and you have to have money in your pockets and have absolute patients, but the rewards of getting what you have sought after is just priceless. It sometimes makes you giddy. To wait for the package, get it, break it open, clean it and sit down with your favorite beverage, cigarette or cigar after plopping that needle down is what makes all of the hunt for this treasure worth it. It is guys like you Michael that make this hobby quite interesting with your reviews and interviews of the insiders and you have encouraged me to seek out more of the 45RPM titles. You are a vinyl champion. Michael did you order the Craft Recording Miles Davis, relaxing with Miles? Keep doing the yeoman’s work of this great hobby.
Hey Michael, I am considering picking up some D2D recordings from Chasing the Dragon. I don't believe I've seen much D2D records featured on your channel, do you have any experience with these? If so, would you recommend? Thanks!
Your collection is very very impressive. It's incredible how your vinyls are in excellent condition. Do you have anything of bossa nova? Could you make a video with your favs of Brazilian music?
For me, Michael, the wonderful outer sleeves make the video extra special. I’ll have to look through your channel to see if you disclose what you are using. All my CR and MMJ have that loose fitting plastic. And that Bruckner!!!
Gracias 💿🎶🎧
I was pleased to have at least one of your 15 Rarest Records, namely the Who, 'Who's Next' by Classic Records, and I certainly agree it is a very good recording. Another one in my collection that I find excellent in terms of recording quality is the Capital Records re-issue of The Nat King Cole Story boxed set on five, 45rpm records; what is your opinion of that one?
Yeah looking for that Grant Green on the Classic Series, had some good ones come out this month, but in June.... Look out !!! Both Tone Poets will be red hot that month !!!
Great show as always. May I ask , when you upgrade albums do you sell the lesser quality sound ones or do you keep them for reference? I ask as I imagine if you are a keeper you must have a number of copies of say a kind of blue.
Michael you killing me with those SRX I’m still upset I couldn’t get those beauties at the time . I do have one of you 15 the Bobby Hutcherson Happenings MMJ it sounds so lush I remember buying at Dusty Groove for $40 now rare great showing Michael. Lovellandrew
I really hope "street of dreams" gets a classic series release. I know they have "idle moments" slated for release soon. They are doing a tone poet edition of "the Latin bit" as well.
Very nice thanks! Buena Vista boxset was nice but wow, hard work. My only large 45 RPM box set was of Sviatoslav Richter. Nice sound but too much work for me! It was like going to the gym! Looking forward to the collab with Stunty! This will be interesting. I came late to the live stream the other week.
Sorry if this has been asked before, but are those gatefold outer sleeves you are using? And do you still store the record in the cover or in the sleeve itself?
The first run of who's next was cut really hot by Chris Bellman .some customers with inferior turntables complained of skipping so it was recut less hot .A bit like led zeppelin 2 RL .
Hi Michael, nice video. Good take on the subject. Your channel is really distinguished from the others with your tone, approach, and presentation, choice of themes. You did not fall in the trap that we are seeing all over with people showing “my most valuable, my least valuable, the price of my collection”, etc. this is boring and common place, nice to see you did not go into that route. Keep your great and distinguished work!
As always, a very interesting take on this aspect of collecting. I too hope that 45rpm versions will continue to be produced, as there are indeed, advantages in this format. As for the inconvenience factor, surely some extra exercise is a small price to pay for the reward in sound quality?
I'm sad...I'd love to have the Bill Evans record. The CD version from Riverside is ok for now...Maybe Chad will do a UHQR version in the near future? I got Happenings from the dreadful blue note 80 Series, vinyl was noisy and blistered (Leagues away in quality from the tone poet series)
I hope You have the cheaper versions of these records like OJC etc from the ol days and play those and only your prize collection for special occasions :)
Since the MMJ are in presentation and in most cases for the sound as well the best version on the market, I don’t see their value decreasing anytime soon. Unless of course blue note decides to one up the tone poets series with a special series with super vinyl and also prints those “unlimited”
as the vinyl revival continues to grow, record companies will increase production capacity, press much larger releases with improved pressings and fewer QC issues. This will cause most of those audiophile releases like Music Matters, etc. to decease in value. This is definitely a pricing bubble
Thanks for the video, always interesting and informative, however I don’t understand the hype about the single sided 45rpm edition. How do you enjoy a 40mn album on 4 single discs ??? I fully understand the fact that 45rpm is superior to 33rpm for the same recording and mastering, it’s already a pain to flip and change a double 45 Lp but standing up and changing 8 times to go through a 40 mn listening session is beyond me... Danke
I wish that I could get into jazz, I feel that I’m missing out on some serious music. However, whenever I make an attempt to enjoy a jazz record I always feel that each musician is playing a different tune at the same time! Is it just me or do any of you out there feel the same way? Thank you for making this video nevertheless.
Sounds like you haven’t discovered the right jazz album that you can connect with and enjoy. Have you tried some of the “classics”? (Kind of Blue, Time Out, Getz/Gilberto, Moanin’, The Sidewinder, Soul Station, Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus, etc). There’s a huge variety of jazz out there, with different styles, tempos, instruments, etc. I’m sure something will click if you continue your exploration into jazz.
I have a great idea for one of your video: “Ranking the bob Dylan mofis in terms of sound quality” I think your viewers will absolutely love it, and regarding the albums with mono and stereo pressing, you can pick the best sounding one of such albums to avoid complexity
As far as I'm concerned and many other listeners, the mono version wins out (which is the case with many Blue Note releases - Chad Kassem did a recent video on mono releases which is highly recommended). I will take the Classic 33rpm mono any day over the SRX version. www.dagogo.com/the-beatniks-vinyl-showdowns-mono-vs-stereo-round-one-two/
Interesting point that there’s a definite difference between rare and collectible (or expensive). I’m rather surprised at which records of mine are actually rare, but mostly due to the fact that there were so little pressed in the first place. When one does occasionally pop up for sale, they’re ridiculously priced. Beautiful bunch of records you’ve got there, Michael. I look forward to you and Stunty’s video. I always enjoy listening to you guys chat. I’m sure he’s got some really rare and obscure stuff. Thanks for the excellent vid, Michael!
I wasnt surprised by anything you showed- you showed exactly what I thought you would. A bunch of really exspensive super limited from the start records. I think you showing a record with only 99 ever pressed and not affordable to even a modest amount of people makes no sense in discussing how rare it is. Those kind of records are meant to be so pricey because the label knows they will sellout pretty fast almost no matter what the price is. Yeah, still rare but its kinda a weird grey area.
Amazing records Michael!. Nothing to do with the video, but it would very cool if you can get Mike from the "In Groove" channel on the next Four Corners. Also, it'd be great if you can interview Ryan K Smith, I think he might be the "easier to get", among the top vinyl mastering engineers. Best wishes from Chile
Good work. Keeping our spirit up in times of sorrow. You and Mazzie are so inspirational to us. We are thinking to do the same. Not about audiophile records, but about rock and vinyl in general. Aber auf Deutsch. Weiß nicht, ob du Mazzies Video über den Tod von John Lennon gesehen hast. Vinyl Junkie 1980. So was halt. Musik und Leidenschaft und Vinyl. Grüße aus Kölle. Alaaf.
You have to be careful with hot title listings. Many sellers will list high and not have item in stock and will buy or drop ship cheaper one from another site or the same site. Once select titles get into collections, they get hard to pry out. Try ebay as well! I only stand up when I listen. If I ain't movin' and groovin', it ain't good.
