My 1947 Chrysler New Yorker Rolling Through The Show

We hauled this car from Carmel, California to Arkansas on an open trailer and the only incident was in Oklahoma City where the roads were so rough a front tire strap came loose. We quickly replaced the strap and made it the rest of the way safely. This car is an older restoration with original mechanics. It has a straight 8 Spitfire engine and fluid drive transmission. It's just a matter of time before I am forced to modernize the mechanics because spare parts are fast becoming obsolete. U-Joints are no longer available. The radiator is octagonal shaped and cannot be re-cored. The car has a 6 volt electrical system which requires creative shopping for battery, headlights, generator and so on. I have learned that when you restomod a car to modern mechanics that has limited under dash space consider putting the air conditioner in the trunk and install the vents and return air in the rear deck. If the cowl and front floor are well insulated that should work just fine. Doing that, you will need to preserve the original heater in order to have defrost.
The thing I like most about these 1946 through 1948 New Yorkers is the view from the drivers seat looking at the beautifully styled steering wheel and dash. Looking through the classic split windshield across that long shapely hood and front fenders is an experience with nostalgia I just can't get enough of. I even like the fact that the steering wheel has to turn several revolutions to make a 90 degree turn. That alone makes it impossible to whip that car into any new direction. When it comes time to upgrade the mechanics the original feel of the steering will be preserved. This video was filmed atop Petit Jean Mountain in Arkansas during the MOTAA Judging Contest. In this event my New Yorker won third place. The MOTAA event is generally scheduled the third weekend of June every year, however the 2020 show has been cancelled for Covid-19. I have been attending this event as a spectator since 1975 and am never disappointed. It's always a lot of fun and every year there are always some different cars introduced to the show. In fact, this was the first year for my Chrysler and since this show I have purchased other cars to introduce to the event. Cars are always changing hands and participants are regularly bringing something new to the mountain to enjoy. James Marple

As a New Yorker who grew up in NYC during the Mad Men era, this car represents the real New Yorker , 😊

This was my first car, well one like it. I did a lot of restoration sitting in the engine compartment between the grille and the radiator. The back seat was great for entertaining. Like sitting on a couch. It drove like a tank in the snow. Love this old boat. Wish I had kept it. Sold it for a uh... Gremlin. Good luck with your amazing car.

I had the 47 New Yorker business coupe. Not too many are left. I sold it in 1998. I totally restored it. Took the guy over two years to finish the interior with the original Mohair type material. I had every piece rechromed and every piece of SS polished. It was a labor of love. Beautiful car you have there.

@@SuperKONR Here is a true story. I remember when before we moved to Flushing, Queens, NYC in 1961, we were living in Woodside, Queens and the next door neighbor had a Buick Roadmaster with portholes on the sides of the hood, a big radiator grill and a radio antenna above the middle of the windshield. I made a fist and punched the front fender in order to find out how hard the metal was and I hurt my fist. That was the first and last time I ever did that, and I was not yet in kindergarten. In Old NYC, in Old America! During the Mad Men era.

Love the car! I have a little body shop down in Hot Springs and recently got a 1946 new yorker! I was wondering if you had any good leads as to where I could find replacement parts for a car like this!?
@jimmarplediy2024

I currently have 4 of these cars and one is listed on ebay; 1948 Chrysler new Yorker. Parts are obsolete so you have to scavenge where you can. Buying parts cars is a good way to buy expensive parts in bulk but many times parts cars are lacking in the same common parts that you need. A decent parts car can be $5,000 to $10,000 and you have to travel across country to pick it up. I have been as far as Carmel California and northern Ohio. U-joints are not available anywhere. Ebay is a good source but be careful on the correct fitment. Andy Burnbaum, Vintage American Parts Company, Mopar Direct, Rock Auto. Andy Burnbaum is excellent to do business with. Kanter Auto Products I stopped buying from because it is nearly impossible to get them to take back parts that don't fit and I was getting too many of those from them. You can buy my 1948 New Yorker listed on ebay, make an offer of $10,000 and I will accept and deliver to you there in Hot Springs for free. Jim Marple 901-495-5264 I will be at the Petit Jean Mountain MOTAA event Saturday September 26 showing an 88 Town Car and possibly a red SSR or white 70 Devill Convertible., say Hi! Would love to learn more about your body shop.

Ok. I've got this same car exactly even in color.. If anyone knows where I could find a right front clear park light lense. Ide love to buy it. Mine is busted in half. Also I need a radiator. My motor is a flathead 6, Super Huricane. My trans is a Gyromatic transmission. It'll operate both as a standard or an automatic. Both items I would love to buy. I'm also on Facebook.

If your original radiator is 8 sided then you are out of luck. You will have to retrofit to a standard 4 sided radiator. I found extra lenses on ebay and also I have purchased 2 extra parts cars that had at least one good lens. Also, you can get these exact lenses in plastic reproduction. I removed my glass lenses and installed the plastic ones in order to preserve the glass ones along with my beautiful swan neck mirrors. Happy hunting!

What size tires are you running on it? Beautiful car! I have a 48 Windsor, I'm not the biggest fan of the 46-48s but I think with the proper size tires (BIG) it will look alright... I bought two of these out of a salvage yard and put together one good one. Had it posted for sale but nobody wants a straight rust free fluid drive car for 800 bucks apparently. Thinking I will keep it at this point...

Firestone Delux Champion 8.20.15, 4 ply polyester tubeless. I love these cars. The art deco styling is wonderful. In 1973 I bought a 1948 Windsor that I found in a road ditch in front of an old country mercantile store in the Ozark Mountains, Arkansas. I paid $350. My dad helped me fix the brakes, changed the oil, cleaned the dry leaves caught between the muffler and floor pan and drove the heck out of it for four years. Sold it for $900 in 1977 and regretted that ever since but made up for that mistake in spades. Sold it to a nice middle class couple who wanted the car to show so I'm sure it survived. I have spent nearly $100,000 on 1948 Chryslers in the past five years with no regrets. Good luck to you with your Windsor.

I've still be able to find OEM parts for mine, a '48 Windsor. I don't want to sound rude but try harder before giving up and changing things. It's only original once, and that matters.

You don't need to "modernize" it. Join one of the Chrysler clubs, and you will be able to get just about everything you need, except maybe a radiator. For your electrical system, you can order a battery at a regular auto parts store, such as Napa Auto Parts. You have to use a Group 2 or larger. Do not try to use a Group 1 battery. It will run down too soon if you are trying to clear out a flooded condition. Also, you MUST use 1 gauge battery cables. You CAN NOT, EVER, use 4 or 6 gauge cables, as 6 volt starters draw twice the amps as 12 volt starters, and 4 and 6 gauge cables simply can't pass enough amps. Also, you CAN NOT put the add-on clamps on your cables if the original clamps get too chewed up. Too much resistance. You MUST replace the entire cable with a new one, with an integral clamp. You can use an 8 volt battery with 6 volt cars. You just have to adjust your regulator so that your generator will put out about 10.5 volts instead of 8.5 volts. Do not try to convert to 12 volts, as you will ruin the relays and solenoids on your Fluid Drive transmission.

NO please don't modernize it!!! So much of our automotive history is destroyed every year in the name of modernization. I think you're going to the wrong radiator shops because I know at least one who had his recored (a '47 DeSoto) without any problem. Any auto parts store can order you a 6 volt battery (I have two cars that are 6 volt) Parts are out there. You just need to look for them. On the u-joints, some will look for a later rear axle & driveshaft and retro fit it as the modification would be clearly invisible (I have a friend who put a Mustang rear axle under his Studebaker but otherwise left it all stock) I would crush my cars before letting anyone resto-mod them.

Yes, the modern-day SUV's are shorter in overall length but compared side by side new luxury SUV's are taller and wider than cars of the 40's. My 1941 Lincoln Continental looks tiny compared to new vehicles.

hallo from Denmark. i have recently bought a chrysler windsor from 1947. and i was wondering about the scoop you can pull up. when do i use that ? when its hot outside for cooler air to the engine, so it dosent run hot ? or is it for something else ?

Hello, I had a 1948 Windsor in 1975 and I truly loved that car. It was my daily driver for 4 years. I found it in a road ditch and bought it for $350. The cowl air scoop is very effective in moving air at your feet and with a rear wing glass open the air can freely flow through the car making it tolerable even on a hot day. Enjoy your '47.

@@jespervrsing1244 That's for interior ventilation. Many cars had a cowl vent starting late 30s when they did away with the opening windshields. GM and Ford went to under-dash and kick-panel vents, but ChryCo kept the cowl vent.
