#orangecaramel #오렌지 캬라멜 This was an intersting experience. They're kind of ICONIC. Let me know your thoughts! 0:00 INTRO 0:55 LIPSTICK 5:24 MY COPYCAT 10:14 CATALLENA 14:28 ABING ABING
you're a little right about Catellena MV. It's the reason the song is so iconic till today. The MV is about female kpop idols and how the industry devalues them. They start as original and fresh fish of different kinds but when the octopus (high demand girl) comes their value starts falling. Just to keep up with the trend or stay relevant they start dolling up themselves with wasabi and soy sauce (loose their own taste to fit to the preference of the customers) and give sexy poses so they can attract customers ( shows the sexualization of women in the industry and the pressure of standardization that makes them loose individualistic characters). At last they turn into the octopus girl and totally loose themselves but when they are eating their sushi counterparts which is now sold at the lowest price they are reminded of their fresh/original charms/selves from the beginning and start crying. The song itself also refers to this concept. It says even as a girl I find her attractive. So they think the it girl/octopus deserves more and is more valuable than themselves. Song is a huge critic of kpop industry from female idols eyes. It shows how female idols are forced to many things to be successful and they have no choice but to obey even if they loose themselves if they want to be relevant. **PS: the song was also like a lesbian anthem as the lyrics display a woman's attraction to another woman.
Yes, Orange Caramel is so iconic that...tbh, they're like the only sub-unit to overshadow their main group. What's amazing about them is that they never shied away from being wacky and weird, they even embraced it lol. Yup there's only 3 members, in order of shortest to tallest, Raina, Lizzy, and Nana. Raina is the main vocalist, and Nana is now active as an actress. Other great songs of theirs are "Magic Girl", "A-ing", "Funny Hunny", "Bangkok City" and "Shanghai Romance", the latter two going on a city theme. And the funny part is they all dress up like Nana in "Bangkok City", and then like Raina in "Shanghai Romance" XD "Catallena" is so iconic and especially there's a fun montage of their intros of live stages, where they just shout in time, it's hilarious XD Also I wonder if CFs are just made to be extra catchy after all XD
The next Orange Caramel songs you should check out “Magic Girl, Aing, Shanghai Romance, Bangkok City” All bops and iconic~~ I think you’d like those ones more for sure, if you ever decided to check them out again.
Magic Girl, Aing, and Bangkok City are imo the legendary trio. Pure camp with shredded camp on top then drizzled with hot melted camp all served with a side of camp.
The best explanation I heard regarding the Catallena music video is that’s a metaphor for the K-pop industry. They start as free spirited mermaids and then are turned into sushi (aka trainee years to debut) and become something that people literally consume. That why at the end when they are eating the sushi they start crying while missing their days as mermaids.
OMG I've been waiting for you to react to Orange Caramel. Yes they are very different from the image they portray as After School. They truly are a unique group. Their music I wouldn't say is fully trot but is trot inspired or "trot-like" so like a mix of pop and trot? That's the signature sound of Orange Caramel. Sidenote: if you look really closely at the guys dancing in the "My Copycat" video, you'll see some Seventeen members, I think Pledis pulled all their trainees out of the basement for that video. The girls dancing later debuted as Pristin. Seventeen also performed with them in some music shows too.
Ah yes, Orange Caramel, the Subunit that shines brighter than the main group it was apart of. The amount of people who don’t know that this is a subunit truly speaks volume for how POPULAR Orange Caramel was during their prime and even to this day. Catallena is probably one of the MOST COVERED Kpop songs of all time
I think the statement only applies to post 2nd Gen fans and stans, which would make sense since After School stopped making music and Orange Caramel continued on. But yeah any person who was a Gen 2 fan absolutely knew After School as they were iconic and Orange Caramel carried the torch on well after them.
Ow my GOD. What is this day even? What an iconic group! And I hope we get more After School reactions too! They are one of my fav second gen girl groups.
First of all, I am always so happy when people finally bless their eyes with Queen Visual Im Jinah aka Nana 😌 (the one you kept calling gorgeous, as you should) Also, you're correct with your darker assumptions about Catallena! The MV caused quite the stir when it came out; a lot of fuss about women being packaged like cheap fish...as in, the entire point...
Fun fact: The Catallena MV was banned from Korean TV for "denigrating the value of human life." Abing Abing demonstrates how Korean advertising technology is far ahead of ours. Orange Caramel's early stuff was more conventionally cute rather than funny cute, although it was still quirky. They do have an early humorous song (and video), "Funny Hunny" that is off most people's radar for some reason. It can be seen here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8jZOWNNEzUQ.html Orange Caramel isn't really trot. Lizzy, however, sings trot. Her solo debut, "Not an Easy Girl" is trot: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ipouIsX1phI.html The reigning queen of trot today is probably Hong Jin Young; a live performance of her signature song, "Love Battery" can be found here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PkCXsFBjCMw.html. A more recent song with more pop influence, "Love Tonight" can be found here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5zONW_hyI5A.html The queen dowager is probably Jang Yoon Jeong. Her discography is extensive, and many trot singers cover her songs. You should probably just search her name on RU-vid and go down the rabbit hole. A rising trot star is Yoyomi. Her signature song is "Who's that Guy," the MV of which is here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Wz-_x-rVnZo.html. A music video of more "traditional" trot song by her can be found here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tw5Xy-RmCoU.html. Yoyomi is quite active on RU-vid and frequently posts her covers of both trot as well as K-pop songs. The reigning king of trot is probably Park Hyun-bin. A live performance of his breakout song, "Shebang Shebang," can be found here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Kta0zl-G3lc.html. I don't know if you watch Korean TV talk or variety shows, but the nation's MC, Yoo Jae Suk, has made his trot debut under the name Yoo San Seul with two songs: "Hapjeong Station Exit 5" - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E_btnbeYGKs.html - and Redevelopment of Love - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gqCt8MlqzTI.html Daesung from BIGBANG also has a trot song out, although it is in Japanese since his solo career under the name D-lite is in Japan. Although there is also a Korean version, the official Japanese MV of the song, "Look at me, Gwisun" can be found here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JlG0fz4WvoQ.html
Orange Caramel has a special place in my heart and had such a distinct flavor. So much so that when I heard WJSN Chocome for the first time I was thrilled that they were carrying on that legacy.
I love Catallena! I really like the message and satire aspect of the video. You were in the right direction with competition but they're just talking about the value of human lives.
can't believe you reacted to orange caramel! they're iconic! I actually expected you not being so much into them even though you said you liked weird stuff and bops, but yeah they're extreme lol thanks for sharing!
they are a sub-unit from a very iconic girlgroup called After School. they went popular because of Catallena and they are the exact definition of "camp" concept and music
Orange Caramel is probably one of the only girl groups I watch reactions to lol. I miss their quirkiness soooo much. None of those songs are on my playlist either, but I love the group so much!
I think Abing Abing was the first time I learned that groups did commercial songs like that and it's crazy how they become our favorites 😂 I hope you check out the Copycat videos and at least try to find the Seventeen members!
catellena.. the juti meri palo meera bit is actually in punjabi.... its means my shoes my sandals..... and its from a really obscure indian wedding song... this group is so random its brilliant
it's probably already mentioned but seventeen were in the my copycat video and there's also a live performance where they are in the crowd. very cute baby svt also if you ever seen a photo of 3 girls dressed up like christmas trees circulating on twitter every christmastime, that's orange caramel.
Raina, Lizzy and Nana, some of the top beauties of Kpop, even Nana (The one you said is gorgeous) was TC Candler's The 100 Most Beautiful faces of 2014, 2015 and the face of the 2010's decade, hope you can react to more videos of Orange Caramel like Aing, Magic Girl, Shanghai Romance, Bangkok City, The Gangnam Avenue, those are iconic songs
I love themmmm! I enjoy their lives so much! They sing live and are super stable, plus their outfits are always on point, I love their fashion! My favorites songs are Abing Abing, Aing and Shanghai love!
Is this trot? 😂 Yes yes it is. Most 2nd gen groups were very much releasing modern pop music that sounded very much like trot which is why it was so popular at the time. But that's also why I was more attracted to groups like SNSD and 2NE1 who were doing music that was outside of that sound.
the Catallena MV is very interesting actually. If I'm not wrong it was about admiring someone (the octopus lady), but since she became so full of herself she became a bad person and ended up being chosen by no one in the sushi bar. But there are also some references to female explotation in the kpop industry (put into plastic packages, sold together) and also letting go of the past (when they eat 'themselves').
orange caramel my giiiiirrrrllllsssss afterschool/orange caramel will always be my girls. i mean look at my profile picture lol lipstick is my favorite one miss them so much
Note Abing Abing was a video based on Baskin Robbins was a sponsor of the band snd they rolled out s new flavor of zice Cream and this video was a promotion for that flavor. I think many of the people in these videos were famous. Well famous in Korea at least. They were fairly big and lots of people wanted to be in their videos. Too bad you didn't do Magic Girl ir was their first big hit.
The musical concept of Orange Caramel was more geared toward cute J-POP rather than actual Trot. For a time the beautiful Nana was on par as a CF Queen in the same league as Yoona, Suzy and Seolhyun. She's still going strong as an actress. Raina had some success solo and was considered one of the better singers in KPOP and an OST Queen for a time but faded till she appeared on Miss Back and signed with a new agency. Lizzy got busted for a DUI accident in 2021, had her contract canceled and went to jail!
Forever iconic. The only time a subunit ended up bigger than the main group. Catallena is a commentary on how the industy/society treats women as commodities to be bought and sold, almost, especially when it comes to marriage. The chorus of the song samples a traditional wedding song Jutti Meri Jandiye from Punjab - to which they are saying 'no no no' to, rejecting the idea that women can be enticed to marriage through materialism. And no, it isn't trot. Trotty, perhaps, but not trot. If you want to hear some actual trot check out something like Young Tak's Jjiniya, Hong Jin Young's Love Battery or Im Chang Jung's I Hate Trot.
Orange Caramel!!! I miss them... Fun fact, I made a random friend into a kpop stan with the shriek compilation video of Catallena 😆 Within a week she was Army...so weird lol ETA: Not Trot! Trot remains the most popular form of pop music in Korea. Shawols are all waiting fornthe day Onew puts out that Trot album lol. Two trot songs by idols include Onew + Luna's duet 'Because I'm a girl' amd Daesung's 'Look at me Gwisoon', which was written by GD. Both are hilarious.
basically Catellena is about how someone can be fussy and hard to get close to (the octopus) but you kind of want to get near them anyway. There is also the undertones of being really great yourself (they are mermaids) but because no one seese your value no one wants you (they go on sale). So through the video every one chooses the more expensive and more popular options (also talking about other kpop groups) and when the girls come in the only thing left is the cheap stuff - but they eat it and its good and they can feel how great those sea ceratures were even though no one wanted them. The lyrics talk about a girl who can see how everyone loves this other chic girl so much, and they want to be like that but they have to work doubly hard just to get a pat on the back. "I don’t like her because she’s so chic But even as a girl, I can see she’s so attractive I’m angry but I want to dance for an hour, two hours I want to play down to my very last bone Lalala shake, shake it, wave your hand Scream until you lose your voice (Jutti Meri Oye Hoi Hoi Paula Mera Oye Hoi Hoi) Not good enough, have some more strength"
