Great video Chris. A suggestion for a future vid that will help tons of people and something that is missing on YT would be a video showing how to mix a pub/bar band that doesn't have instruments miked. Handy tips that cover controlling feedback and eq-ing vocals/basic fx so that they cut through the mix. I think this would be brilliant for all the smaller bands on the circuit who have to set up their own gear and who bring their own basic PA with them along with old, school analogue mixer. I know every PA and desk is different but I think a walk through would be brilliant. Just an idea. Keep sup the good work. Love your vids.

I really got excited when you uploaded this video. Thank you for going though the desk. I know this may be a pain but would we be able to download maybe an x32 edit version so we can see closer up your workflow? No worries if not. Thanks Josh.

Probably the only live sound engineer that goes this far for even a local band showcase. You really know what you’re doing! Is it true that some engineers will only introduce any sub for only the headliner? Seems like a lot of the time that any opening bands will only have limited pa support. And the headliner will have the subs and full pa support
@chrishammillaudio
@chrishammillaudio 5 месяцев назад
As in only headliners get the subs in the room? That's bonkers if a venue doesn't let every band on the bill get full PA support.

Fascinating. Not an audio engineer but a drummer/percussionist who’s starting to get interested in this world after a lifetime of acoustic background. Did you come in specially to film this or was this before bands arrived?

Not only does it open a window of communication with the stage, but once the vocal is set and the monitors are set I very rarely have to add anything else to them.

If you’re worried about the cost of a console, you’re probably in the wrong field of work. Unless you’re starting your own company whatever venue you work at has a console to use and it’s most likely something like the X/M 32. 2500 for a console that can do just about everything you need it to do is a bargain.

Great stuff man. Anyone that gets their panties in a bunch over your workflow can go kick sand. And if its another engineer using the console, he can just put the work in and make his own scene from scratch. The last few times I used an M/X-32, I was using a setup where guitars were on 18 and 19, and vocals were on 20-24. I like having things I want to play with on the far right of the console. I like my left hand fingers so my pinky is the primary vocal and ring, middle and pinky are BVs. In dodgy rooms where feedback can zing ya even with a dialed, rung out PA, my hand is always there pushing and pulling the BVs as I need them to keep that extra bleed out of the mix. I also put anything I might need to bump up from time to time there as well, which is why guitars were at 18 and 19. I've run live sound on tons of different consoles, including tons of old, crappy analog consoles and even without all of the other amazing things a digital console like a M/X-32 provides, instant routing to anywhere is my favorite by far. I can do a gig without any effects, without useful EQ, without any compression available, but I start feeling stone age when I've got to yank a cable from somewhere and cram it in elsewhere!
@chrishammillaudio
@chrishammillaudio 3 месяца назад
The “WhY Is ThE kIcK nOt On ChAnNeL 1?!?” People make me laugh. It’s a digital console. Any input on the stage box can be routed to any channel I want. I like my settings because they are MY settings lol We live in an age where any engineer can have the same console and make it completely different than anyone else. You do you.
@JalenRawley
@JalenRawley 3 месяца назад
@chrishammillaudio Exactly, you'll see the same thing with DAWs. God forbid the kick not be channel 1, and don't even think about changing the colors to something else. "Vocals gotta be green, man. That's where the money is." Okay, I abide by that last one...

Thanks for a great channel, too bad for us that you live in the US, a bit far for you to help us. I live in Sweden. The church I'm in needs to replace the mixer soon. I've been thinking about the Behringer x32? I see many people you help use that mixer. What do you think about that? Or should we look at other brands?

Wow, you really do a lot of Compression. I do 1:3 at most. Base settings are around 1:1.5. Why do you use the GEQ on the Wedges and not the included Bus EQs?
@chrishammillaudio
@chrishammillaudio 5 месяцев назад
I use both. GEQ for broad strokes, channel eq for any additional need. As far as compression goes it’s what works and sounds good to me, but every bands different and as I say in the video I adjust if needed. Compared to how much compression some touring sound guys use when they come here I use hardly any.

Not sure what the point is of listing all the settings. None of it matters in a different venue, with different musicians, playing different instruments. And 12dB of gain reduction on a vocal is ridiculous, unless the artist is a screamer.
