This episode shows the 3 most influential things that got me into self-sufficiency and growing my own food on our small acreage homestead. Series playlist goo.gl/RaipxZ
This is the fifth episode in our growing food in small spaces series ( see Ep1 here • How to Build a Raised ... and Ep2 • Beneficial SMALL Anima... and Ep3 • How to Grow a Vegetabl... and #p4 • 3 Gardening Upcycling ... )
This episode and video series were created with the help of Creator Queensland (a QLD Govt and RU-vid initiative) and Griffith University.
The following student crew from LiveLabs helped create the "Growing Food in Small Spaces" series as part of their film course final assessment:
Scott Nolan - Director
Emma Adin - Unit Manager/2nd AD
Karlee Catalano - 1st AD
Sophie Cross - Camera
Phoebe Ireland - Data Wrangler
Tom Davison - Camera
Kenny Waterson - Sound Recordist
Hugo Hood - Production Assist
Patrick Mahon - Continuity
This series was certainly a great learning experience for me as well as being a fun project to help create - thanks to all who made this possible.

Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane - the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let's get into it! Cheers, Mark :)

I loved seeing the old pics and hearing you share your stories with us. Some people think living the dream is having a big fancy house, cars, toys and a fat bank account.. I can’t wait to be self sufficient because that to me is living the dream. You inspire me more in every video 👍

We live 20 minutes from Toowoomba, so I know the route to Crow's Nest, you must have cycled. My cycling days in my teens, were spent exploring the back roads around Stanthrope, as we lived in The Summit. Limitless energy and places to go! Those were the days. You wouldn't recognise the road leaving Toowoomba, to Crow's Nest now. They've just installed the second Range crossing. It was great to read your story. Living in many country towns, inspired me to grow my own. Nearly all of my friends were farmers kids, and I got my first job employed, picking beans. Once I was walking through the stone-fruit orchard with my friend, just chatting about teenage life, and I said I was hungry. She picked a piece of fruit from the tree and said, help yourself. Well hello, mind blown! I knew she owned a farm. I knew we were walking in her family orchard. But food came out of the "store", surely? LOL. I'm glad I had those influences, growing up. Because food comes from the ground, silly! ;)

We made the decision before our second child was born in 2018 for me to stay home with the kids. My wife still works and I'm a home dad. This will be our first time gardening and I have found your videos so inspiring. And that enthusiasm I have developed for this upcoming growing season has rubbed off on the whole family and seeing my 3 year old daughter get excited about worms in the garden and heirloom tomatoes gives me a level of comfort and pride I'm sure you have also felt over the years. God bless you Mark. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for sharing your history and how to be self sufficient. Just got into gardening cuz of the pandemic and came across your videos. I’m going through your old stuff to learn as much as I can for this year’s garden. We planted last year and did ok, but for sure didn’t do it right. I want to do better this year. Hello Mark, I absolutely bloomin love your vids mate! They're so inspiring to me and they do make me chuckle. I'm from the UK and me and my lady love our food and have really got the bug for home growing now. We've recently built raised beds and have currently got beets, carrots, cauliflower, spring onions & loads of herbs on the go. Our growing conditions are a wee bit different (wetter/cold winters) to yours over in OZ, but your tips, guidance & practical knowledge are so helpful to keep me pushing on. It was such a pleasure to watch you talk about where it all started for you, and how life experiences come together at times..and you just know what's right. I too was very close to my grandad who fought in WW2 with the Navy, I have such beautiful memories of being in the garden with him growing fruit & veg (especially tons of taters!) while he told me stories, I learnt so much about life and to be a good person. I did make me a bit emotional thinking of that great man and those innocent times. Just wanted to share my thoughts with you. Keep up the awesome work you absolute dude!!

Having served in my country's armed forces I encountered similar situations like yourself that led me to self sufficiency. You've motivated me to start a garden of my own and I'll be implementing the knowledge I've gathered from your videos soon. I live in a desert, so it should be fun. G'day, Sir! Hey Mark I can't tell you just how much I really enjoyed that very personal story... your grandfather's farm looked awesome and really love your homestead...looks like you have some great things growing there. Similar to you my grandfather started an urban farm in the East end of London just after the war when it was rubble.... I was also inspired as a boy visiting my Greek family in Cyprus who were small scale self sufficient farmers....really love this way of life and the excitement of growing interesting things to eat. Thank you for creating such informative videos and regards...Paulo

Great video Mark, when we see how happy and resourceful are the "poor" people in the 3rd world countries" there is no question that we on the "developed" countries are the ones guilty of the consumerism and materialism trap that spoil the planet and family life. You are giving and excellent education to your kids and in that education they learn what it is needed to be prepared in any economical event in the future. Thanks for sharing, cheers from down Hobart, Arthur.

Our life was very similar. Hubby worked very hard. Seven days a week so I could stay home and raise our children. We both felt it was important for one of us to be here. So I grew food. All the food I could. And I learnt to sew, knit and crochet Now children are gone. Married with kids of their own and I still grow lots of food to share with them

Congrats on your life choices from young to now. You are a great influence for sure. Thank you for your advice and the videos have helped immensely. I won’t have anything as big as you do but for now in these tougher months I am doing my small part in being self sufficient for my family. Even my daughter is utilising her balcony to grow food. Being in the garden also helps with my depression and it’s amazingly how calm and satisfying it can be on your health. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Love hearing the story of how you got here Mark, thank you for sharing. I wanted to grow veggies when I was a tiny little spudkin even though nobody in the family did that. Then came The Good Life on t.v and my desire grew as I saw the possibilities. I was given a little patch of ground but little assistance so it all failed. Now, I cannot go through a year without growing food :)

Thank you for your service brother. The armed forces is a good life if you're single and without kids and a nightmare if you do. It pulls you away from everyone you love. I served in the Marine Corp and got out when the wife and I started raising a family. Mane reason was my daughter. The day she was born I watched her die twice.. She had a heart condition ( which she has grown out of now). I was gone on deployment for three months and when I returned she had forgotten who I was. That's why I transferred to the civilian life. You definitely made the right choice! Thank you for everything you teach us and keep pumping out the videos my friend! We'll keep watching... Semper Fi!!!

I'm just so thankful for your "ton of lemons" vid! I'm similar to you with the trade off agreement thing. Except, we live in a suburban rental property & I'm a bit disabled, so can't work. I grow our veges all in pots, and it's only when I can move properly, that I can physically garden. Your vids help me make the most out of the time when I can be constructive because I don't usually have the time to dawdle through it, when I'm actually good to go. I've started a compost, albeit in a Ubeaut proper bin someone once bought & paid for, & left behind in their move... nevertheless I don't have to waste anything anymore. I'm in Vic, so I don't have the sublime temperatures that you can regularly garden by, but with a few tent pegs & a lightweight painters worksheet, add a couple of upended empty pots for height... BAM! Temporary greenhouse on the lawn. I've still had a go at some of the early germination of some seeds, that you'd get within two days, sowing straight in the soil haha!! My Grandfather is/was a WWII Vet. He was MY biggest influence. He used to tell me, "..work out what it is that you love to do, then figure out a way to get paid for it." Look at you go Mate! Keep bringing it to us please, for as long as you can. People like me, still have much to learn. You clearly, have much to teach. 👍👍👍❤❤❤

Hey Mark, I also got into gardening because of my grandparents. I enjoy your videos very much - your corn video recently showed me what I was doing wrong, and I expect my corn will end up being much better this next year. :) I'll post a video and link to you next August with my results. Thanks!

A GREAT BACK STORY I THINK YOU MADE ALL THE RIGHT DECISIONS. I'M SURE THE BOYS WILL APPRECIATE THE FACT THAT THEY HAD THEIR DAD AT HOME TO TAKE CARE OF THEM AND TEACH THEM ABOUT LIFE. I WAS LUCKY THAT WAY TOO TO A POINT. DAD WORKED FROM 04:00TO 12:00 7 DAYS A WEEK BUT HAD A 30 DAYS VACATION EVERY YEAR. WE WOULD GO CAMPING, SEE GHOST TOWNS AND ALL KINDS OF GREAT STUFF. EVERY 2 OR 3 YEARS WE WOULD GO FROM CALIFORNIA TO INDIANA TO VISIT ALL OF OUR RELATIVES BECAUSE WE WERE THE ONLY ONES THAT LIVED IN CALIFORNIA. OUR EXTENDED FAMILY WERE JUST A LITTLE DIFFERENT THAN WE WERE. LOL I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL AND TRY TO WATCH AS OFTEN AS I CAN. I ALSO TELL ALL OF MY FRIENDS BACK IN THE U.S. ABOUT YOU. HOPE SOME OF THEM SUBSCRIBE.
