I really admire the way he is so inspired, focused, intelligent, and dedicated -- and generous with all of those important gifts. What a wonderful talk!
I lost my husband to pancreatic cancer last summer--my hat is off for this young man who has a way of trying to save others from this devastating disease. Congratulations, Jack! Way to go!
This young man is just getting started...he has the tenacity and intelligence to see a project through. He's also very articulate and not afraid to get up on stage and present his topics. We'll be hearing from him for years to come...
You are amazing, and an inspiration! Everybody can only learn from you and be grateful to you! I really hope you are right though, that there are more people like you out there. Wishing you all the best! Blessings!
Jack, you're such an inspiration ! I hope there are more people like you in our generation and by simple means we can learn how to save the world. Thank you for everything you've done!
What a marvelous young man and ever so brilliant!!! He has already made a huge difference in the world with his incredible discovery!!! Way to go Jack!! So proud of you and thank you ever so much for saving future lives!! You are amazing!!
you are an amazing young man, thank you for what you have accomplished so far, as a person with ovarian cancer this might help detect it faster for so many females of all ages.
Delightful speaker - what an encouragement to see such intelligence and persistence in the new generations. Very important discovery. Also well done John Hopkins for enabling this young man's research.
Jack, thank you so much for sharing your path with guts and humor! I' m 54, disabled and thinking that most of my life has already gone into history. Like Chaldean, I too look up and newmy newest hero. Thanks kid for the kick in the butt!
What an amazing young man. If more of our kids would put an effort into learning and using their minds for good, just imagine what the world would be like. If there were more kids like Jack our future would be a lot brighter!
We lost my father n law Feb 2012 to pancreatic cancer. This kid is amazing and has now given the rest of us some hope for ourselves, friends and family members. I just hope that with this discovery that they won't get greedy and charge 100's of dollars for the test.
Both of my biological parents died from pancreatic cancer at relatively young ages. I am excited by this development and amazed by this young man. Bravo Jack! I'm sure we will be hearing a lot more from you through the years.
Jack, you are an amazing human being~! I am 10 years older than you, but you are now officially my newest, living role model! :D I am so proud of you and you really inspire me to use the internet and my will more effectively. I have so many ideas but little drive to commit to making it tangible. Thank you so much for existing! What a beautiful way to start your future. Keep those positive around you and don't take things to heart that do not nurture it. :)
You are amazing....you inspire & motivate & your so funny too! Your parents must be so very proud of you & how your mind works....I feel like I can conquer the world after hearing your speech....I can't even believe that you have achieved what years & years & millions & millions of dollars & so many scientist could not. Please keep going, you might just save our planet & so many lives with it...I thank you from the bottom & of my heart, I appreciate you & your sense of curiosity!
BTW...last comment and most important...Way to go Jack YOU ROCK!!! I am so impressed by your initiative, perseverance, self confidence and courage to even try. Brings to mind a saying I heard once and stuck..."It's your attitude not your aptitude that determines your altitude" Keep aiming high young man and you will surely go even farther. Well Done!
Angels of protection around him! I just had a friend that died of pancreatic cancer last week. Take one long, last look at the 3 cents because this is the last time we will see it. All medical inventions and cures must start somewhere with someone. I am sure he has testing going on and a patent pending. I say Amen!! Anything that can be found to fight cancer is badly needed and it is a blessing.
Jack is a genius!!! I wish I could get the chance to do a future research with him. And my dream is to do a research at John Hopkins University!! Well done and keep it up dude!! The world need more people like you.
Such an intelligent teenager, his parents must be so proud. Rather than being a "typical" teenager society defines as being music/text & celebrity obsessed he has broken that mold showing that ignorance for what it is and is making the world better by advancing science, he has achieved much more than the average person whilst still a teenager and proves sometimes listening to the youth of today can be beneficial, with age does not come wisdom. You can learn a lot from youth as evident here.
Great job! Great inspiration for young people! The most important things are said in the last minute and a half of your presentation. Big inventions are more often a product of a chance or a combination of circumstances, I hope you'll get some more of those in the future. Keep up the good work!
What a great guy! Besides being an incredibly smart guy he seems like a great person in many ways. If you read between the lines about some parts of his speech, he basically had a lot of problems to start his research by those universities or companies that make a lot of money thanks to cancer. No pharmaceutical company would like to have a cure of cancer, even less an early and accurate detection of it.
Bravo Jack, for your discovery (wow!) but also for going far beyond the limitations and confinements set by school and indeed by society, and for the fearless perseverance it took to get there!!!!! You are quite an inspiration! Would love to know if Jack's parents encouraged "marching to the beat of a different drummer" and how they facilitated him pursuing all this.
Jack, I enjoyed last week's chance to see you speak in Philly. You inspire us all to never stop believing in yourself and your ideas. Ignore the idiots. If you network with others that might help my niece who has POTS disease, have them check out her RU-vid clip. She is Jenna Malcolm
People post about not liking his voice, about his (supposed) sexual orientation, and a lot of other external things, while ignoring what he's saying. I might be an oddity, since I was admiring his spirit, his energy, his wit, his dedication--and his discovery! Hooray for him! As for a healthy lifestyle preventing cancer? I'm sure Jack wouldn't dispute that. What he's offering here is a way to help people detect and treat it early, and perhaps by less invasive means, thus saving lives.
You my friend are a hero. Everyone your age should be like you. You encouraged me to go ahead and study genetics and biotechnology in university. Thank you!! :D
My favorite line was ".... I didn't even know I had a pancreas" LOL Incredible conversation with the world there Jack... Thank you for having this conversation... And yes, with all these minds entering the internet we should be sharing more and more solutions each day!
I find the fact that no one within the medical community that I know of has even heard of Jack, nor his work at Johns Hopkins, HIGHLY distressing. There is nothing in New England Journal of Medicine. There is nothing in the Journal Chest. There is nothing in Medical News Today. There is nothing. I have spoken with oncologists, and other medical professionals, who have never heard of Jack and are utterly amazed once they do a little research - meaning watching one video of his and verifying the data as accurate. There is always the argument that doctors and oncologists are too busy to do any outside research because they are constantly working. That argument holds no water. It would be like saying a particle physicist was unaware that someone, two years ago, developed a device that could transport a human being beyond the speed of light. This is their chosen profession. How could they be ignorant regarding something so earth-shattering regarding their chosen profession? Pancreatic cancer has a 3-5% survival rate. Most cancers are deemed cured if the patient is 5 years symptom free. Pancreatic cancer patients don't live 5 years. The vast majority of them don't live 3 years. The reason is that pancreatic adenocarcinoma is such an aggressive cancer that metastasizes rapidly and is metastatic before symptomatic, meaning there are few to no symptoms until the cancer has already spread and the patient is already, essentially dead. Detection of pancreatic, ovarian, and lung cancer, in-situ, may very well be the cure for these dreaded diseases since resecting them before they metastasize may prove curative. It may be that the reason for there being no mention of him in any of the professional medical journals is that, unknown to me, Jack's invention was proven inaccurate, or a sham, or otherwise invalid. If that is the case, I have nothing about it, and I tend to doubt it. I have never been one to believe in medical conspiracies, or conspiracies in general. I am now beginning to wonder.
Tom Saueracker this is reasonable except his supervising professor appeared on US 60 minutes talking about him. requires more digging it seems. I am here in New Zealand and will dig as much as I can, but the very professor that gave him access to a lab is talking to US 60 minutes about him....????
Exactly what I was discussing yesterday with my family, all those incredible inventions and patents that get bought by massive companies and throw away just because they'll lose money if its produced.
Bravo Ted. It's not often a 58 year old cynic like me is impressed. I've been saying for years though, that the internet when left alone by the money junkies, can save this world of ours through it's ability to connect us with brilliant minds like Ted's.
You are amazing!! Keep up the GREAT work! Its amazing what you can Learn, find and research yourself on the internet...as i KNOW this all to well! God bless!
A kid who didn't know what a pancreas is creates a test for it, lung, and ovarian cancer that takes 5 minutes and uses paper! Thanks Jack Andraka for your point of view and inspiration. Shell of Recovering Autism, ADHD, & Special Needs.
Actually the researchers knew of mesothelin as a marker a few years ago. Just google "protein marker pancreatic cancer mesothelin". But still I like to see young people with such passion and open mindedness.
The antibodies in your blood attach specifically to the mesothelin protein, which makes up most cancerous tumors. So, basically you take the nanotube, which is essentially a microscopic filter, and lace it with the antibodies that catch only that tumorous protein "mesothelin". Thus, you detect cancer in that patient. I could put it so many ways, but you should understand now.
