I catch a lot of flack for my sporterized Enfield and other rifles. But it was my 2nd deer rifle, and it was $30 at the time. New bolt guns were $400+ at the time.
I was at a gunshow yesterday where i listened to a guy rant about how terrible and offensive it is to see so many sporterized military surplus rifles. It seemed to genuinely disturb his sense of order in the world. That someone would modify something to make it more useful for their purposes or to pursue their interests? Apparently, that is unacceptable behavior for some folks. Oh well. Keep it up man. I like your work.
@@caleblebaron1179 which one is historical ? Maybe the mauser that did not have 1 single matching number. They sold them mausers for 49.95 at the gun shows rusted and most had bad head space. Maybe the remington that there where millions made. Also the remington looked like it had never been cleaned was not functioning becouse every single internal parts was wore out. Maybe the ruger old army but that one was not modified at all it just has a drop in cylinder in it. So I turned 1 gun that nobody would collect becouse it wasnt numbers matching it was beat up wore out made a nice hunting rifle out of it. Or the shotgun that would have been scraped becouse if you had to buy the parts and pay to fix it you would have 5 times what is worth in it. You tell me which one.
Thank you and I agree I think ruger built the very best cap and ball revolver ever. Problem is when the Italian companies are building new clones at less then half the price of a used old army it was inevitable.
@A.R.American1 100% agree. However, the Italian repros can't compete with the rugged strength and bomb proof build quality that is in the Old Army. I am fortunate enough to own a "Holy grail" Old Army (Clements .50 cal conversion) built for myself for deer hunting back when I was in the Army still. I yet have to harvest anything with yet though. Can't wait to see more Old Army videos from you as well as that Rhodie Mod 11.

The Kirst Konverter costs more than a steel-framed Pietta. It’s a lovely, nondestructive addition to have for a very worthy piece. Nobody’s peeing on Ruger’s grave.
You know what you have if that's what you want to do to your own firearms to make them stand out for your use then keep doing it and remember you can't please everyone

Let's face it-some collectors, and some wish-be collectors-have bats in the belfry. This goes for ANY category. The batty ones will wig out if you use your collectibles or if you don't, if you display them or don't. They just want to be miserable and spread it around.
I totally agree about the Old Army and the Mauser, never played with that Browning. I had a Old Army and it is rather heavy. As to the Mauser, I had a sporterized K98k and a original stock so I bought parts and rebuilt it into military spec. with the parts, the original sporter and all other stuff; not one number matches. I just wanted an example of type and this was SO much cheaper then outright buying one. As you say: you do you. PS: I see you ave a busy highway to deal with by your spread. Sorry to hear that. Thank you buddy I like seeing old gun put back to original or restored. With me I like to personalize every gun I get in some way or another. I like to make the different from everyone else's. That being said there are a few I just cant bring my self to change modify or customize. My colt detective special my colt m1889 and that 410 sxs shotgun to name a few.
I inherited an old sporterized Mauser. It has tons of serial numbers and not one matches. I believe it was imported to the states from overseas as a jumble of parts that were assembled here with sportsman’s wood stock. Its 30-06 but has a socket for a stripper clip but the open action is too short for a 30-06 round with clip. I assume it was originally chambered for the German 7.92 (the so called 8mm) which I believe was shorter than the 06 rounds. It’s a great rifle. But sad that so many post war rifles went through this.
That may be a 96 mauser or a couple countries made a small ring 98 mauser if I remember right. All of my 8mm mausers I built can take a 30.-06. Length cartridge. The one in the video I'm turning into a 300 winchester magnum. My 8mm mauser was the same way it had all military hardware and a military stock. My grandfather bought it and sporterized it. It was his hobby he taught me and we used to buy those non numbers matching mausers at gun shows for 49.95 . He did buy a numbers matching all original really nice 6.5x55 mauser for 100.00 that he sporterized. Me I wouldnt buy a numbers matching mauser in good shape I'm not into the military style let the collectors have them. I want the ones that will end up in a buy back and get destroyed or parted out and make something nice out of it. Thank you for watching and commenting
Good stuff, i did the same thing with a 51 navy to shoot 38s in, a few years back i built an 1860 that was full size and coverted it into a 45 colt snub nose. Completed with a birdshead grip, 3 inch barrel and a kirst cylinder with loadin gate, its blued with case hardened frame with checkered walnut grips, probably my favorite little revolver right now and its got my own blood sweet and tears in it. Dont get much better then that, love to have something like that A5, that full length handguard is sweet as hell, people are just too damn highstrung on what other people do with THEIR guns. Make it your own and shoot the damn thing has always been a motto of mine, you got some very cool unique stuff, like to see it.
They are really good guns I dont think there is a tougher cap and ball pistol made someday I will find a 5.5 inch old army. Thanks for watching and commenting
Thank you I really like it couldnt afford to buy a rhodesian a5 so I built one. Not why it's called a rhodesian a5 tho they hold 8 in the tube and 1 in the chamber.
That's crap, bunch of people that haven't built anything! Love the shotgun, I bought a black aces semi 12g for cheap. Had both a stock and the birds head and I put the demonstrative concepts strap, works great for it's intended use after I cleaned burrs and other rough edges on it! Imported Turkish with American engraving!

I have a 1895 Mauser that was converted to .300 savage but left in original military configuration, sent it to a guy in South Carolina and had the stock replaced, re-blued and a 4x9 El Paso Weaver put on it, maaaaan what a good lookin, good shootin rifle. Keep at it man!!
I would like to have a cap and ball like that and yes the conversion cylinder like you said it isn't permanent when I saw them back when I was way younger I wanted one if I ever have the chance I will get one if I can afford it . people will be people ya can't change that keep doing what you do good luck
I watch your channel BECAUSE you customize guns. People forget that guns are tools and you gotta make them your tools. I have never seen you use a “Collector “ grade gun for one of you projects soooo you are getting a gun that wasn’t going to be used up and being usable again….WIN WIN WIN.
Thank you that's how I figured it too. I look for beat up guns that arnt collectable. I wouldnt have the heart to do what I do to a collectors piece of history but will do it to the ones that would just be neglected anyways becouse people feel they are too far gone or worthless.
I'm not sure I understand you. You close with saying you don't care about collector value but the lack of collector value was a big part of your critique. Have you shot the Mauser? Matching SN's be darned I bet that's a sweet gun. I think Ruger had a poor marketing strategy. Even the Blackhawk which filled the void left by SA Colts, I believe they presumed that the market wanted something reminiscent of the Colt but was competition accurate. They could have had the Cowboy Action thing sewed up had they cloned a Colt and not reinvented it to prove they could make something more accurate and modern but also not modern. Same with the Old Army. Sure there was a niche market but nowhere near the market for faithful reproductions. You're going to go through the pain and suffering associated with black powder to shoot a hybrid? Great guns though.
Thank you , I guess I should have been clearer in the video. I never cared about collector value when buying mausers I looked fro the ones that where mixed matched non collector guns. I would not personally sporterize a numbers matching collector gun. I also dont have a intrest in the military mausers. That's why I look for the non numbers matching guns. I like to build and or sporterize guns. That's also why I chose the remington model 11 to build the rhodesian a5. I dont think I could have done that to a nice browning a5. I considered modifying the ruger old army for a loading gate but just couldnt do it. I love my old army it's a great gun I got a good deal on. I would never pay what the old army sells for. I also prefer the colt clones over all cap and ball revolvers. I will say tho when the dont ever modify any gun everything is a collectors piece people start going off. I think about finding a numbers matching mauser or something else and cutting and sporterizing the crap out of it just to give them a real reason to freak out lol.
@@A.R.American1 i have a "mauser" that a friend built as a gunsmith school project. It has a reciever of unknown origin and a new barrel in 7.62x39. Not much identifiable as mauser except the bolt. But thats what he started with, a Sarco Inc bolt and reciever. Its unique and fun to shoot. Extraction could be better though.
@thomasozminkowski2589 exactly that gun would have just been a beat up piece considered worthless or sold at a gun buy back to be destroyed. He turned it into something that will be used, appreciated, possibly some ones first deer will be taken with it and possibly become a family heirloom passed down to further generations.
Ruger old army was over priced and inauthentic. Thats why it didn't sell enough and they stopped making it. Find one in perfect condition and make a cut-away out of it for show and tell. That ought to tweak their nips.😂
Haha it's a great gun but cowboy action shooting and sass most guys I met want authentic looking clones the old army isn't. Also they shoot light loads the old army was built for heavy loads. That's why the demand for pietta and uberti clones I believe killed the old army high cost and not a clone demand dropped and it didnt sell well enough just my opinion

The funny part is these Karen’s are the first to yell about freedom and never see the irony in the fact they mean THEIR freedoms, not yours. Even if you were ruining the collector value of a gun, it’s YOUR gun to do as you wish, it’s not like they were missing out on it or you intended to leave it to them when you you pass. If anything they should be happy as it will be less of a particular model and theirs will increase in value! There are keyboard experts and Karen’s in ALL things, they can’t help it, everyone must think and feel exactly as they do about everything…it’s freedom…
I'd be a very, very happy Old Goober if I were to run up on a Ruger like yours AND a conversion cylinder all in shooting condition. And I'd be more than a little happy with the others in this video too! Some folks need to not only get their facts straight but get over their damn selves too!!!
Other than it being none of their business, there needs to be a distinction between shooters and collectors... There are many firearms that are worn, mismatched, etc.. whether they get shot, altered or thrown in the dumpster... It's your discretion fuck 'em

People are full of useless opinions…. If you weren’t customizing something, they would probably complain about something else, like…. “How dare you shoot something like that?! You’re gonna ruin the collectors value!!!”…… they just need a ride in a whaaaaaambulance. I’ve seen a Ruger Blackhawk Bicentennial limited edition 357 mag revolver, that wasn’t made in that high of quantities, that had a scope mounted on it. Some fool drilled and tapped it out to mount the scope on it. I myself was a bit flabbergasted for a minute, but then when you look at that model revolver from 1976…… even to this day, they don’t really sell for that much at all. Not everything old or limited edition is some sort of fancy high priced collectors piece. That’s another thing about some folks too…. They think everything is worth a million dollars or something.

People are so goofy. There were MILLIONS of Mausers made. Browning and Remington auto shotguns..hundreds of thousands made. If someone was screwing a scope to a 1 of a thousand Winchester I could see someone being upset but even then at the end of the day it’s your gun. Do what you want. Good God…people need to get a grip.
