My 30 Day Experience After A Tonsillectomy Surgery - NO SURGERY FOOTAGE

In this video, you’ll see me go through the recovery stages from a tonsillectomy surgery. As mentioned, I wasn’t able to get footage of the actual surgery being done and I wasn’t allowed to see the tonsils after they were removed from my body. The main reason for making this video is to show you what the recovery is like - it’s not pleasant.
If you’re having the operation done, I’d advise you to listen to the person giving you the pre-operation assessment and take notes. Believe it or not, although the surgery may not seem very big to you (like it did to me), if you do not rest, it can be dangerous.
During the recovery, days 3-8 were the worst for me (and most people). You will have good days and bad days. One morning you may wake up feel better, and the following day may seem worse. It was difficult to eat and drink, even drinking water was a struggle for me. I couldn’t each much for the first week so I ended up drinking high calorie drinks to give my body energy. I lost just under a stone altogether. Most people will experience weight loss, but your body will naturally put the weight back on, which can take up to 6 weeks.
After the operation, it took me just over 3 weeks eat comfortably, but this can vary from person to person. I was off work for just under 3 weeks due to my throat bleeding. I’d advise you to take 2 weeks off work, get plenty of rest and sleep and drink as much water as you can. On my second follow-up operation (6 weeks after operation) I checked out to okay and my mouth was healing as it should.
I do apologise if the pictures inside of my mouth look bad quality, but I wasn’t able to get many clear pictures, as it hurt to open my mouth sometimes.
**It took me just over 5 weeks to feel fully recovered**
My weight loss and gain:
Before operation: 10st
- 2 weeks after operation: 9st 1lb
- 4 weeks after operation: 9st 3lb
- 6 weeks after operation: 9st 3lb
- 8 weeks after operation: 9st 5lb
Things you may experience after the operation. Everything in brackets is what I experienced:
- Taste buds changing (lasted 6 weeks)
- Swollen uvula (lasted 3 weeks)
- Feeling tired (on and off for 3 weeks)
- Muffled/throaty voice (lasted 3 weeks - the first few days I couldn’t talk much)
- White tongue (lasted 2 weeks)
- Bad breath due to the scab (lasted 2 weeks)
- Stiff neck (lasted around 10 days)
- Lots of saliva (lasted around 10 days)
- Painful to swallow saliva (lasted around 10 days)
- Bleeding after operation (happened 2 weeks after operation)
- Coughing up small amount of blood (happened 2 weeks after operation)
- Feeling hungry 24/7 (started just over 3 weeks after operation)
- Bad sleeps (varied day-to-day)
- Fever
- Headache
- Feeling faint
- Dehydration
- Stomach ache
- Tongue swelling
- Difficult to breath
- Feeling/being sick
- Disrupted breathing during sleep
Medicine I was taking:
- Ibuprofen
- Co-Codamol
- Erythromycin
- Clarithromycin
Mouthwash & throat rinse I was using:
- Difflam Sore Throat Rinse (throughout the day)
- Corsodyl Gum Treatment Mouthwash (morning and before bed)
I hope this video helped. Here are some good websites with useful information I found which might help you:

Day 7 after my surgery! Had tonsillitis 3 times and trust me, tonsillitis was much worse than the recovery process from the surgery. My tonsils were so inflamed and infected that they were black and swollen. Days 1-5 we’re definitely the worst but it was so worth it! Can’t wait to eat wings and steak again! Great video!

@@liufox4394 To be honest, I've got no idea. I guess if people don't want to go ahead with the operation (because of the tonsil stones) then it's another way round it. But I'd stick to getting the tonsils removed, that way, theres no way of the stones coming back - unless your tonsils grow back again.

@cm66ot69
@cm66ot69 3 года назад
@@This_or_Thatx1 the reason tonsils are removed is normally because they're inflamed (causing a pain at the back of your neck like you say), or because of tonsil stones. Medicine will help, but there's a chance the tonsils will become inflamed again in the future. So you're best to speak to your doctor if you're getting the pain regularly. A lot of people get tonsillitis, but not everyone needs the surgery. I'm not a doctor or anything, so don't quote me on that. But I hope this info helps! 👍

Pain will be there and white scabs will be there on throat for 2 weeks at least. Be cool. I had the same surgery done 1 week before. Going through the same experience. Overall you need to have very patience, coz due to the pain post the surgery, you may be angry for everything. But be cool. Don't worry.

I was in so much pain that I literally couldn't sleep that well, My throat was hurting and my jaw and ears were extremely sore to the point were an heating pad was the only thing relieving it. I would also recommend you to check if you have any digestion issues like GERD or other gastric issues.. that will also cause frequent throat infections. Please do a thorough check before finalizing the surgery. Your throat will be full of scabs for 2 weeks. After a month things will be back normal. it's horrible experience I know. You can't anything spicy for 2 weeks apart from ice creams. But nothing to worry. Do the gastric issues check up. May be that could be your issues. If it's healed no need of this surgery

Hello, this my tonsillectomy experience. The reason I had to get my tonsills removed is because they were so big they made me sick everyday and I was unable to breathe correctly because my nose was also blocked all the time. Day 1: - Immediately after waking up from the surgery I noticed I was breathing fine. - I didnt feel any pain (immediately after waking up). - I had to wait few hours before I could have a sip of cold water. - I only drank water and milk and felt mild pain while swallowing. - I was prescribed Paracetamol, Anti-biotics and an Anti-inflamatory. - Cant talk. Day 2: - My mouth was producing excessive amounts of saliva and it was painful to have to swallow it every 30 seconds so Instead I started spitting it. - Mild pain. - Feeling of something stuck in the back of my throat. - I had Ice cream (vanilla), milk, yogurt and milkshakes. - Cant talk. Day 3, 4, 5, 6: - My mouth was still producing a lot of saliva and I kept spitting it everytime I felt I had to. - Mild pain only while swallowing. - feeling of something stuck in the back of my throat. - mild ear pain. - I can talk but It feels uncomfortable. - I only had Ice cream, milk, yogurt and milkshakes. Day 7: - I tried eating vegetable soup, it hurt. - Mild ear pain. - Still feels uncomfortable to talk. - Less saliva. Day 8: - I ate pancakes even though it was a bit painful. - Ear paintalking. - Less uncomfortable talking. Day 9: - I still dont understand why but I woke up with the worst pain since the surgery, ear pain was also unbearable at that point. - I felt much better after taking Paracetamol. - I ate french fries and Pizza through the pain. Day 10: - Mild pain first thing in the morning. - Still painful to eat. - Ear pain. I'm on day 11 today and I still have ear pain. Please make sure : 1. You have a sip of water every now and then, it's important to keep your throat hydrated to ease the pain. 2. You take your meds on time even if you have to wake up in the middle of the nthen to do it, morning pain is the worst. 3. You avoid solid foods at least for a week or anything that has citrus in it until you're fully healed.

@V1Salvo
@V1Salvo 2 года назад
@@Natt96 It is normal for a small amount of bleeding to happen. If the blood can literally be seen leaking out, then I would go to the ER just to be safe. However, if you experience just some taste of blood and see some small amount, then it is normal. Also, you should go to the ER if the blood is bright red. This is likely just the normal process. You are on Day 7 and scabs typically fall of between days 5-10. Make sure you drink plenty of water and avoid hot liquids and food. Eat soft foods to ease any scratchiness in the throat. Your pain should be a lot better by now. But unless your blood is bright red or is more than minor, then don’t worry. But if you still are very worried, then you can call whatever number is appropriate in your country to ask questions. In the UK, 111 is a good number to call. It is not for emergencies, but they can let you talk to a doctor if it is necessary and they also ask questions about the bleeding. If you can, you can also call your surgeon if you have their number. I never noticed any bleeding during my tonsillectomy recovery, however between days 5-10 (I think about day 8) I did start having this weird metallic taste in my mouth, which was most likely minor bleeding. Remember, minor bleeding is normal because your scabs are falling off (which is good and normal).

@Natt96 2 года назад
@@V1Salvo Thanks a lot for your answer. I'll try to calm down. So far I haven't had any bleeding. One more question - did your doctor suggest you to eat "normally" for better peeling of scabs so they won't be too thick or recommended soft food like yogurts, soups etc? I've heard different opinions on this.

So anyone who watches this is either having a tonsillectomy or has had one and let me tell you, it’s been one roller coaster ride I did not think it would be, obviously do it if your doctor advises you to do it, but honestly my experience has been crap, I’ve had to go to the hospital two times for excessive bleeding, once for recauterization, I’m still getting small bleeds and having to constantly apply ice to make sure I’m not bleeding any more, it’s tough I am basically on bed rest and I have three kids. Hardest recovery I’ve ever had, they say it will be worth it but I’m waiting.

I feel bad for everyone in the comments, my experience is very different. I’m on day 7 right now, I’m of painkillers and my scabs are falling off, I can see the pink at the back of my throat. Can’t eat still and I’m still spitting saliva but I’m feeling much better. If you can’t eat, try making shakes that are high in protein so you can keep weight (I lost 10 pounds within 5 days). The pain was the worst on day 5 (a scab fell of too early and it was the worst pain I’ve ever felt lol). If you have small tonsils like I used to have, recovery should be faster and less painful (I have little to no pain when I swallow right now, Weirdly when I drink water and other things it begins to hurt). I hope everyone who has had them removed has a quick recovery🙏

Day 11 here!! Thank you for your video and your pictures, it was very helpful! As of now, I've been healing pretty good and my scabs are almost gone, so yay! The only thing that bothers me is my swollen uvula. In the description box, you said it took 3 weeks until your uvula was healed, but when exactly did you start seeing improvment? And after a year since your surgery, have you had any problems with your uvula, like does it get big for no reason? I've never had a swollen uvula in my life until after this surgery and it scares me :(
@cm66ot69
@cm66ot69 3 года назад
No problem, I'm glad it helped! From what I remember, my uvula was swollen about a month after my operation and it was swollen for about 3 weeks (I can't remember exactly as it was over a year ago I had the surgery). I went to see the doctor about it and he said it's fine, and it's just to do with your mouth healing as the whole mouth as been affected by the surgery. Since my surgery, I have not had any problems with my uvula or anything. I wouldn't worry, honestly! Like I said, it's most likely your mouth recovering and for some reason your uvula gets swollen, but from my experience, I never had a problem with it long term. Just keep an eye on it, and if it gets a lot worse or is the same in a month's time, then contact your doctor. I hope this helps! :)

Lol, it’s my first night after the surgery. It’s literally 10 hours after. Of course I cannot swallow without pain, but that’s the only pain for now. I don’t feel any other serious pain and maybe this is because of the paracetamol (2x500mg every six hours). It feels like when I had tonsillitis, so it’s not a new feeling for me. I had to remove them because they were oversized and were causing apnea. They literally called me from the hospital 4 days before the operation, so I didn’t have time to be stressed and whatsoever. Besides this, I knew it would be for good and I didn’t even feel any stress. I hope the recovery to be as less painful as it can. Btw, I came back at home feeling that I wanted to eat a whole pizza or hamburger, so I tried to substitute with some natural hummus... Though the hummus contained garlic and I immediately felt it, so I stopped eating after the 3rd tea spoon 😂 Think positive!!!

Also, keep in mind that I am 40 years old, which makes things really different. Anyways, since my last message 5 days ago I’ve been into some really painful moments BUT, all of them were related to the medication. If you take the painkillers the right moment, I think you’ll be just fine. Unfortunately I didn’t pay much attention to when I had to take my medication, therefore I had some really painful times. What ya looking at me like that for : yes don’t cancel it. I’m still in recovery, going for the 7th day. For the last 2 days I have a weird pain which is like there’s a needle in both sides when I try to swallow. The most interesting and annoying thing, is that whenever a try to eat anything (even yogurt), my throat instantly reacts and I have severe pain in both sides but mostly in the right side, a pain which “hits” my wisdom tooth and drives me crazy. If I stop eating (which I do immediately), then the pain slowly goes away. And the pain is not related to the painkiller, as it can happen even after I get it! Weird operation and definitely weird and painful time. I imagine the day that I will be able to eat a hamburger, but I’m mostly interested to see how am I sleeping and if a keep having apnea and snoring...

This is honestly amazing. I'm currently on day 7 and I was so worried that it was just me for the pain and struggling to talk and such. Still struggling to eat personally and I'm waking up a lot in the night with pain in my ears and jaw. Really sucks but so far this morning I haven't taken any pain meds which is great!

@edenmcpherson3070
@edenmcpherson3070 2 года назад
@@brittanycook5641 So when it came to jaw pain for me, I'd use an ice pack. I really helped my pain. Don't put it directly on your skin as it can cause skin damage but like... 15-20 minutes ice on and 15-20 minutes ice off. Another thing is to take your meds at given times. The meds I had actually didn't work on me so I used others which I wasn't supposed to do because of the bleed risk... but I was dying. If your meds aren't working, I recommend you talk to your doctor about that and they could give you something else to help the pain!!

Eden McPherson I’m on day 9 now !!! Honestly I’m not in too much pain anymore and I feel stuff in my throat tear and I swallow it! I don’t know if it’s the scabs or not because I didnt bleed like most people said they do! I was able to eat a full meal today! It took me like an hour! When your scabs fell,, did they fall at once or was it over the course of a few days?
@edenmcpherson3070
@edenmcpherson3070 2 года назад
@@brittanycook5641 It's most likely just the scabs. As long as it's not bleeding (like a stupid amount) then you should be alright! They will fall whenever they're ready. It just probably feels strange because you're actually swallowing them rather than seeing them come out (as if it were on your body). Everyone is different though!

Heyup Mate. I’m on my 10th day of removal and I had a haemorrhage on the 4th day due to the fact I was in the bath with hot water. But since then all I’ve had is one mouthful of spit when one of the scabs came off on day 7. So now I’m just keeping an eye on them to make sure. Did you notice any bleeding at all when your scabs came off? Even if it was just a mouthful. The bleeding doesn’t scare me, it’s the going back and staying in the hospital that I have a real fear of, I hate it.

It's hard to say, I mean, when I coughed up blood it was most likely from where the tonsils were, but I couldn't tell. A few times during the night I could taste blood in my mouth, but only slightly. took mine off 12 days ago. Days 6/7 were the worst (the rest of the days were pretty much painless, taking ibuprofen every 8h and paracetamol every 8h as well, but interspersed). I think I never felt so much pain in my hears and throat, but since then it's been a constant and exponential improvement. Nonetheless, had an hemorrage on day 10 that required to be seared in the ER. Yesterday (day 11) I ate steak and I honestly don't feel a damn thing. I feel awesome after these 12 days.

@cm66ot69
@cm66ot69 3 года назад
Yeah, I experienced the same thing! My breath was terrible for a good week or so after the surgery. But don't worry, it will go away within two weeks from what I remember. The reason why you've got bad breath is because of the scab - that's how I understand it. It could also be the fact that, because it hurts to fully open the mouth (it did for me), trying to brush your teeth 'properly', isn't so easy, so that could be part of the issue as well. But give it a few weeks (I know, it's pretty disgusting) and your breath should be back to normal then. All the best 👍
