In this video, you’ll see me go through the recovery stages from a tonsillectomy surgery. As mentioned, I wasn’t able to get footage of the actual surgery being done and I wasn’t allowed to see the tonsils after they were removed from my body. The main reason for making this video is to show you what the recovery is like - it’s not pleasant.
If you’re having the operation done, I’d advise you to listen to the person giving you the pre-operation assessment and take notes. Believe it or not, although the surgery may not seem very big to you (like it did to me), if you do not rest, it can be dangerous.
During the recovery, days 3-8 were the worst for me (and most people). You will have good days and bad days. One morning you may wake up feel better, and the following day may seem worse. It was difficult to eat and drink, even drinking water was a struggle for me. I couldn’t each much for the first week so I ended up drinking high calorie drinks to give my body energy. I lost just under a stone altogether. Most people will experience weight loss, but your body will naturally put the weight back on, which can take up to 6 weeks.
After the operation, it took me just over 3 weeks eat comfortably, but this can vary from person to person. I was off work for just under 3 weeks due to my throat bleeding. I’d advise you to take 2 weeks off work, get plenty of rest and sleep and drink as much water as you can. On my second follow-up operation (6 weeks after operation) I checked out to okay and my mouth was healing as it should.
I do apologise if the pictures inside of my mouth look bad quality, but I wasn’t able to get many clear pictures, as it hurt to open my mouth sometimes.
**It took me just over 5 weeks to feel fully recovered**
