SafetyWing (best for younger travelers + digital nomads): safetywing.com?referenceID=alinamcleod&Ambassador
I use both of these companies depending on the destination and requirements of entry. If you are going to be abroad for a long time and/or don't need as much coverage, I would recommend SafetyWing. BUT you cannot purchase SafetyWing WHILE in Canada or USA. You can only purchase once already abroad. Hey Mondo is more expensive but offers a higher level of coverage including plans that have trip cancellation/interruption insurance. Hey Mondo would be the better insurance to use if you need travel medical insurance when applying for a visa. Both companies cover covid. I am an affiliate for both companies, but I pay for my own policies.

Hi Alina! While French is one of Canada's two official languages, Spanish is unofficially the second language in the USA - and gaining in usage and popularity. As a resident of the USA, I need to work on my Spanish skills. My Lithuanian-Catholic upbringing in Montréal (French all around, Latin in high school) gives me some basic understanding and fluency with the Romance languages. I am most fluent in French, but reading text in Italian, Spanish or Portuguese - I can get the gist of things. But I want and need to become a more fluent speaker of Spanish!

Alina, you’re right in that English is less widely spoken and understood in South America than say in Europe. But with a very basic level of Spanish you can get around and have a great time traveling throughout Latin America. People are super friendly and will appreciate any attempt by you to communicate in their language. You’ll have no problems at all. Have a great trip!

As a Spanish speaker here I might be a littler biased but I think Spanish is one of the easiest languages to learn for English speakers. I think the hardest part will be getting a handle on the pronouns but if you're not after C level fluency its no big deal. You're correct that people will be very appreciative of your efforts to speak Spanish and will be more willing to help you. Please be safe in your travels! Cheers!

Yes. Trying to learn Spanish and Russian ...Spanish is much easier as mostly the same alphabet and many common words spelled the same. I would guess what I learn in Spanish takes 3x as long in Russian.
@victoriaaletaaustria2817
@victoriaaletaaustria2817 2 года назад
@Supernova. I agree. Because how the words are spelled are the same as pronounced. Good thing we were colonized by Spain & had compulsory units while in university then, the Spanish learned is still helpful. Unlike when I studied French, I must learn and cultivate in my speaking the rolled "R" and nasal tones. When I studied Mandarin, it's the same Pinyin spelling but denotes many different meanings just by pronunciation. And when I learned Nihongo, there are pronounced words that is very different in the spelling using the alphabet. But now I have not been using to converse with someone who speaks the same, I forgot some but can still manage simple ones to express myself. In Brazil most people know English in the city, unless going to rural areas.

As an English speaker, I've personally found Spanish grammar to be more complex and harder to learn.
@ilves5980

The easiest would be Norwegian. It is the closest related language to English. Norwegian doesn't have as many loan words from French and German as Swedish and Danish. That said Norwegian has Aaaaa lot of dialects and there is no point in learning it as it is only spoken in Norway.

I am from Brazil and live in USA, I'm fluent in Spanish, i learned the language in 30 days by myself while also going to school to learn English at the same time. I used to live in California in a huge Spanic community, most Mexicans, and i was the only Brazilian in town in the area where I live, so to live in a city where the majority of the neighbors speak Spanish helped me a lot. The Mexicans holds a very special place in my heart. I no longer live in California, but travel there to visit friends once in awhile.❤

Whilst knowing you'll never see this, the best lesson I had 15 years ago learning Spanish, was that the sound of vowels never changes. Unlike English. It's short , sharp and constant. (unless you have an acute accent over the vowel, which only makes the same sound slightly longer). I don't know for others, but it certainly helped me.

I find it very helpful by listening to Spanish love music by Romeo Santos, Prince Royce, Shakira, & Jeans........ Right now I am currently studying/improving both Russian and Ukrainian language. Took me little over 10 hours to learn the 33 Russian and Ukrainian alphabet through an online tutor. I would also use YT to help and also websites (language change) to read Russian and Ukrainian. Best of luck to you Alina. Spanish is a beautiful language and yes easiest to learn for sure. ¡Hola! Como Estás. 2 years in High School and 1 year of Spanish in College...and native speakers at normal speed...whoa 😋. I've found communicating with people helped me learn faster. Same with my limited Russian skills. I recently had a huge surprise when a contractor I was working with rattled off some fluent Russian when I told him I was struggling, but not quitting learning. He has family in Russia and Ukraine...made my day 🤗. You do not come across many Russian speakers down here in Georgia. Spanish is quite useful, especially out West where I'm from....but now almost anywhere in Estados Unidos.

Wow, that’s amazing. I have the lifetime Rosetta Stone that I bought with your codes about 2 years ago or something when you went to Greece. You asked me how my learning goes when I bought it so here it goes: I already knew a lot of the vocabulary but my favourite part is the pronouciation. Learning languages is generally hard, we have to create a routine and make a habit just like going to the gym and occasionally go back to the basics. I believe if you had stayed in Kyiv, you probably would know Ukrainian by now if that was something you would want.

Interestingly enough, my high school Spanish seemed to serve me well and was mostly able to get by. I am impressed that you are learning a new language. My question to you is why not continue your Spanish language skills in Central or South America before going on to Brazil to tackle Portuguese? It was just a thought. Thank you for all that you do. I really appreciate it and enjoy all your vlogs. Glenn from Sarasota, Florida, United States 🇺🇸

Glad to see you learning Spanish also. I took that in High School, and still know some of the basic words and sentences to the point I can understand it. What is interesting is even talking to someone that knows Spanish when I lived in the U.S., they would spill it along with English, so now you are talking in 2 languages. That made it a lot of fun and easy to understand. And you're right, Loretta Stone course was a very good way to get introduced to the Russian language before going there. I find is still is referred to, but Alona is also a good teacher but secretive sometimes as if she doesn't want me to know what she is saying. As long as that does not come out in an argument, then I'm OK with it because she also knows English quite well and has a beautiful accent ))))). Can't wait to see your experiences in South America and I know that they will be the best because the shares will be the best as they all come from your eyes giving us a show. A key difference between children and adults learning a language is the amount of leeway given to children vs adults. Children can mispronounce, mis-conjugate, and generally say silly things without scorn. That allows a base to be formed which is then refined into a more developed language. Just an observation.

That is definitely true. We need to have less embarrassment when making misakes.

I learned German in high school and will brush up on that language as well. It is a great savings and if you want to learn new languages, a one time charge of $179 is a great deal! Good luck on your journey in Columbia this winter (so jealous as I am in cold New England)! Look forward to videos as hoping it is safe for you to shoot some good content. I know you have some concerns. If you can't walk around too much and do videos, you could always do a sit and chat in your room or a safe area to talk about your adventures. Stay well, Safe and have fun! adiós

Hi Alina, I know three languages but two languages I do speak daily, there is no one to speak English to which is my third language. The best way in my view to learn any language is to be in that environment or if you are not then listening is the most effective way to start by.

Hello Alina, good morning, if you go to Brazil it is a wonderful country, the people are very kind, I worked in Brazil, and I fell in love with that country ,, I recommend it ,,, I plan to return to Brazil it makes us feel at home, ,, The pronunciation of Spanish differs a bit, since most of the pronunciation is nasogutural ,,,, but Brazil has thousands of people who also speak English ,,, a hug from Bogota ... to my Ukrainian presiosa.

Do not worry Latinos when we see a very pretty woman we pay her compliments that is out of culture and respect, it is not strange that Brazilians also tell her that you are very beautiful, because it is true ,,,

Hi Alina! I have been to 103 countries (or 104 if you count Kosovo). I currently live in Russia. I fully agree with you on the importance and fun of learning languages. I speak Russian, French, German, Dutch, Spanish, Ukrainian and Hebrew (in descending order of fluency). Never been to Columbia though. In fact I have only been to Peru and Argentina in South America. I am also thinking of going to Brazil this April. Good luck with Spanish and your trip to South America.

Languages are always good and lead to fun experiences. Learning thankyou in Ukrainian got me a LOT of smiles in Lviv from the toughest looking security guards! I lived in Sweden for a few years and Finland for a few months, so I was fluent in Swedish but it's kind of gone now with lack of practice. My Finnish is minimal but was useful, my rule when I'm in a country for a while is learn to count, thankyou, please, good (as in - the food tastes good!) and as many food words as I can remember. Memorable random Finnish phrase - minulla on kaunis moottorisaha - "I've got a beautiful chainsaw".

I would like to learn Greek ... my Mom's side of the family is mostly Greek (sadly, Mom is gone, but I have relatives and friends who help me). But if I know I'm headed for Greece, I'm definitely getting Rosetta Stone.

That's awesome! I actually did Greek on RS when I went last year and it definitely helped me learn some basics. Greek pronunciation is challenging though!

I'm going to Medellin sometime around the 1st of the year. Might buy a place there as a 2nd residence (Americano). The double L "ll" that is pronounced with a "y" in most all Spanish is pronounced like a "j" there. All you need to know is "Donde esta el bano" .....where is the bathroom :-) Maybe you can teach me Spanish as mine is lacking.

Hello Alina, enjoy Colombia, I was there last year in Cali and I really liked Salento and the coffee plantation area. Just be careful with your camera and video equipment in Colombia and Brazil. Always be aware of your surroundings. However, you are a world traveler and I am sure you know how to take care of yourself. Cheers, Carlos.

Great video! (I also speak Russian and some Polish so . . . I think if you are fluent in a Slavic language, it helps with others.) I go to CDMX and Mexico a LOT (I live in Houston, TX), and what especially helps me in Spanish is having a set of questions that I use with Uber drivers. As the traffic in CDMX is congested and notoriously slow, I always have a chance to practice my Spanish. I think I have learned more via Uber than any app. There are also free things on You Tube: sorry but, I have to mention that. Take care!

Hi Alina…I think you will pick up Spanish very well, my concern is that when you arrive there, just watch your self, because we went there few years ago and got robbed in broad daylight…took all the cameras and mobile phones we had..

I don't plan on traveling, but if I was going to the $179 would be a bargain. But, who knows...the way things are going in the U.S. we may need to learn either Russian or Chinese.
