Dude, thanks for making this video. I’ve been planning on making comments on all the 311 albums for many years and just never got around to it. I’ve seen them over 20 times and met the dudes back in. 04. You obviously know how special 311 is and I appreciate you making this video I subscribed because you’re an open comer just like me. Thanks again. I’m about to watch the entire video so maybe I’ll add more to my comment afterwards but I’m sure you are going to rank them well . I just played the blue album and transistor front to back on the drum set . Last year I flew to Chicago and saw the Blue Album/Transistor at the HoB in 2 nights. Speaking of Offbeat Bare-ass and condemning the drug war, what a win, I just beat a drug case in court this AM and I’m ecstatic.
I don't think anything shows the age of the grassroots album more than the line "the war on drugs may be well intentioned". I was only 9 in 1994 so I wouldn't know what the perception of the drug war was at that time but by at least 2001, pretty much everyone knew the war on drugs' intention was mass incarceration and normalizing police having extra surveillance on marginalized, poor communities. It was also a failure as it only strengthened cartels. Congrats on your win against the system. Nobody should be sitting in a prison for what they choose to consume. Great analysis. 311 is my all time fav band as well. I have all 13 albums on a playlist and I hit shuffle and jam all day. There is not a single song I skip!!
Nice video man! 311 is my favorite band as well. Those first four albums all have a special place in my heart for different reasons. They’ve help me through so much in my life. I do love Mosaic too, and my photo managed to make it to the cover, so huge bonus. There are some definite low points on that album, but the songs that do hit the mark, hit it really hard, and there are plenty of those. Much love!
That's sweet gettin on the mosaic cover! I still have my fair share of phases with that album. It's still probably my favorite post-evolver album with voyager being not too far behind
Thanks for making this, I drive an 06 so I can only listen to CD's. Always like 311 but tbh I only really knew their hits. They have so many other good songs!
I drive a 2009 Hyundai accent and still love buying CDs when something new comes out and they will put it on CD still. Our cars will outlive all this unnecessary, over bloated, electronic crap they make today! I hope your journey into 311s deep cuts is a great one! Thanks for watching!
@@Iamdelivered7 Yea, I can't believe they never went back to that producer again! I was watching this older interview where Nick was saying that the guy..I think his name is Hugh..wasn't much of a fan of the genres they do so getting an outsider to dig what they do was a push to make the album the best it could be or something of that nature and I'd definitely say it worked!
Except for your Uplifter and Universal Pulse ranking, this is the closest ranking I have seen that matches my own taste. Thank you for making it. 311 bliss!
No sir, I just really didn't care for Universal Pulse, but really loved Uplifter. Just a difference in preference. I respect your opinion and did agree with all your other rankings. Grassroots is still my favorite overall.
Great ranking and explanations. I appreciate how much thought you put into the list. I would put “DTOM” and “Universal Pulse” on the “C tier” but leave everything else the same. New 311 album in 2024!!!
That seems to be the most debatable era of the band haha. I don't know how I feel about their newest song yet other than it sounds like it would fit right in on mosaic
Liking this video/discussion. My biggest changes would be swap Universal Pulse and Don’t Tread on Me. Also. Stereolithic is at least A tier if not, S for me. Been a fan since my first show in ‘97 and seen them 9 times over the years.
Nice list, i agree with most of it. I have the same three favorite albums, even same order! 311 is one of the most special bands to me, even though i only discovered them after their prime. But the first songs i heard were from Transistor, it's also my favorite and among my all-time top 5. Absolute alt-rock gem that might be the most underrated thing i have ever come across. Have you read some of the "professional reviews"? That made me stop taking critics seriously. Don't Tread On Me is actually not bad in my opinion, it has other pretty songs like Getting Through To Her and Long For The Flowers and i do enjoy the whole thing more than possibly anything after it. But i agree with Uplifter being the worst, that belongs in D. They still haven't made any truly awful album that would be E or F tier material. But i don't like the latest two that much, even some of the tracks without Feldy feel bland, but they do have their moments. By the way, i think i heard Nick discussing about new material in interview a while ago.
yea, the future with Pnut was still in question when I made this list but he is staying and there is new music coming! I love how much this video has been getting out there to 311 fans lately!
Nice ranking. 311 fucking rules. Pretty solid ranking overall. Definately agree about the DTOM to Universal Pulse era being the weakest. I might have Uplifter ahead of the other 2 just because my copy has the song Get Down. I do think Sterelothic was a really solid return to form that is oddly overlooked by the band live. As far as the Feldman tracks go, I really like Places That The Mind Goes. That is a song to have sex to and the guitar solo sounds so nice. Till The City's On Fire though, that song is atrocious. Like the music equivilent of an Ed Hardy shirt. I don't mind Good Feeling or Born To Live and really like Lucid Dreams. I hope they release something soon. I'm also a big fan of Nick's solo album My Shadow Pages as well as the album he made in 2020 with George Clanton.
I love how much this has been getting out there to fans lately. One of the times I saw 311 live was in 2014 in support of stereolithic so I saw quite a bit of those songs live. Its nice to see some love for Lucid Dreams. I don't think they've played it live yet. After one of my favorite other reggae style bands Iya Terra recently breaking up and being gutted over it, it makes me all the more grateful that 311 keeps trucking on! Thanks for checkin this out!
I started to listen to 311 til recently. Their sond is exactly like latin rock, I don't care that they sing in english. I's like the sound of Mexico's Maldita Vecindad or Argentina's Los Fabulosos Cadilacs mixed with rock rap. Cool band.
I couldn't even tell you what tracks to begin with man.... Flowing, stealing happy hours, prisoner, crack the code.... I hope your journey into this band is as life changing for you as it was for me!
Damn . If anything I like from chaos more than soundsystem or transistor lol but transistor gotta be right behind it. But evolver above it? That's some take. At least we can agree uplifter is the worst and universal pulse is underrated
I have never understood the pedestal that Transistor gets put on. I've tried to like it but to me it's overloaded with filler tracks. I can respect the musicianship and the experimental aspects as quite the achievement but it just never grabbed me as a whole. From Chaos is my second favorite 311 album, Grassroots being #1.
I love all 21 lol. If one song wasn't there, it wouldn't be the same. From Chaos has so many great songs, no doubt about that. I should have given it credit in the video for how in the whiny post grunge and cringey braggadocious nu metal stuff going on in 2001, from chaos didn't latch on to any of it!
