This is an older activity, but I always read the book Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. Prior to reading the book, I cut out a large heart on butcher paper. On one side of the butcher paper I write "Before you speak, think and be smart, it's hard to fix a broken heart." I turn the butcher paper over onto the blank side so the kids don't see the quote, and as I read, every time the character gets her feelings hurt, I crumpled up the heart, sometimes I will even put little tears into it. Then, at the end of the book, I open up the heart, and I turn it over and I show them how things said and done by others can put a lasting impression on our hearts! Where there are tears in the heart, I use real Band-Aids to try to mend those parts but we have a discussion about how we need to make sure that we are thinking before we speak and try to always be kind to one another. Each of us signs the heart agreeing that we will be kind to one another, and I hang up the heart in our classroom as a reminder for people to think before they speak. There are templates and other activities online for this book as well!

I did chrysanthemum with my second graders! But we read it and then did a drawing/writing activity about what makes us “wilt” and what makes us “bloom”.

I teach elementary music and I read All are Welcome. It’s so cute! I have a melody I sing the words to, and the students all sing “All are welcome here” after each page. We then add some instruments. I then follow up with it the next week with “Your name is a song”:)

Love this! All these books are perfect for back to school and the first week of building that classroom community! I’ve purchased all these books for teachers who added them to their Amazon wishlist! We didn’t do read alouds when I was going through elementary school😭 which I think hurt my classroom community (we started on curriculum on day 2)! My favorite is the invisible boy and the one book i wish we did was first day jitters (had them during elementary school)

These are wonderful ideas, Michelle! Thanks for sharing! I like to use First Day Jitters too. I make a Jitter Jar where they would put pictures or words that help to calm them when they are feeling nervous. Ideally these are things they can do in school like breathe, count to ten, draw, stretches etc and then it’s used throughout the year at the calm down spot in my room. I’ll put them in a notebook and they can read theirs or other’s to find a way that they will use. I’ll include other things too like finger labyrinths, play-dough, fidget tools. Of course this can be done in a year that students can share materials…not during COVID restrictions. I am thinking of putting the jars on the wall and making a small kit of materials for each student to use this year if we still can’t share materials.

I am going to purchase, A Letter from my teacher, Invisible Boy and I promise. This is the time of year where my husband starts to see my credit card skyrocket, "just a little." lol. Thank you so much for giving us some new ideas for going back to school. I"m actually taking a grad class right now and I'm hoping to wrap it up in the next week or so to get moving along with back to school activities. You are the best! I'm going to be broke. lol! My favorite story to read is Leo the Late Bloomer. It lets the class know that they may fit into the category of the parents, who keep waiting and watching for Leo to mature or Leo himself, who lacks the maturity at first, then grows over time to become just as brilliant as his peers. Some Children need more time.

I made a list of promises from me to them and glued it in the back of the book, and after they read the book and read our schools honor code, they wrote their own promises on post it notes. I loved hearing kids arrive at the station and say "wait, LeBron James wrote a book??" Thanks so much for this awesome idea!

The book promotes confidence, understanding of differences, and making others feel welcome.
