So important that you have differentiated between being a Registered Dietitian and a Nutritionist which can include anyone who has nutrition (or quack) ideas. Well done Aja and it will all be worth it. Good luck on the exams.

thank you for this video!! I still haven’t chosen what I want to do in college/life, but being a dietitian is a newer option. I realized that although my own relationship with food can be strained due to my health problems, I want to help other people who are struggling with physical and mental issues related to food. I would love to work in sports nutrition, but my dream would be helping people in recovery from eating disorders. I would probably need another degree for that in psychology, though (rightfully so), and it would probably stress me out way too much. I’m still open to the general job though!! just trying to figure out what makes me the happiest doing.
@AjaMadeYa

Thank you for your lovely comment! It is great that you want to help people overcome food struggles. I have known of RDs who have worked closely with individuals recovering from eating disorders and they require extra training, however not a whole degree's worth of extra training! It's a lovely career option, that is definitely rewarding. Many athletes have suffered from eating disorders and disordered eating patterns, I think being a sports nutrition professional specializing in eating disorder recovery would be a wonderful career choice for you to mesh both of your interests!

I’m an RDto be too! But I’m studying here in Australia, and we’re called Accredited Practising Dietitians (APD). I did a 3 year Bachelor of Nutrition and Food Science (allows you to become a general nutritionist and food scientist), and am now doing my accredited two year Master of Nutrition and Dietetics degree. In the master we do 3 “placements” (which would be the same as your internships - we do 1x4 weeks in a food service setting, 1x7 weeks in a community setting, and 1x10 weeks in a clinical hospital setting. Once we’ve successfully completed the degree coursework and our placements, we don’t have to do a final exam. We can then enter the workforce and spend our first year under the guidance of an APD mentor. I find it interesting how the different countries work, but by the sounds of it our coursework is very very similar!
@AjaMadeYa
@AjaMadeYa 4 года назад
Congratulations!!! Sounds like you are near the end of the tunnel ahaha. It is awesome that they provide an APD mentor for your entire first year of work. That's something Canadian dietetics can really benefit from! What is your instagram, I'd like to connect. :)

Hello ! I am actually thinking of applying for a nutrition degree for my bachelors and undergo a masters in dietetics both in Australia ! Was wondering if you could let me know which university you studied your bachelors and masters at ! also, which universities you feel are established and good for bachelor in nutrition and masters in dietetics ☺️
@ohliveeah24
@ohliveeah24 2 года назад
@@precioushong2665 Hey! I live in South Australia, I did my Bachelor's degree at the University of South Australia, and my Master's degree at Flinders University. I loved both universities. I'm not too familiar with programs in the other states, but if you're planning on staying in Australia to work there's definitely more job opportunities as a Dietitian in the bigger states like Victoria, NSW and WA. I would also recommend choosing a Masters degree that isn't accelerated, it seems appealing to do a degree in 18 months so that you can finish quicker, but doing your Master degree is a lot of work because you also have placement so I definitely recommend taking the 2 years to complete it :)

Im a McGill student in my last year in dietetics. My internship was paused due to quarantine. I’m so happy I bumped into your video. Likewise, clinical nutrition in a hospital setting doesn’t feel like my thing. I was hit with the imposter syndrome during my first internship last year. I think I may need to further my education/work experience to pursue something out of the scope of what I did in my internships.
@AjaMadeYa
@AjaMadeYa 4 года назад
Hey! Thanks for your comment. I'm sorry your internship was bumped back! If your internships did not place you in a field where your dream job lies, perhaps you can get that extra education/experience from home while we are social distancing. For me, I've been working on my health writing which is something I never got experience in while I was in my internships. Maybe your niche is waiting for you. :)

I’m looking to pursue a career in Dietetics, however, my bachelors degree is in Business which is non-traditional. My question is would I still need to enrol in a 4 year accredited dietetics program or could I apply to an accredited masters program in dietetics having taken the prerequisite to get into the program??
@AjaMadeYa
@AjaMadeYa 4 года назад
Most programs require the accredited undergraduate degree. However, if you have the prerequisites to enroll in the master's , it sounds like you might be able to do that. I highly recommend talking to the program coordinator of the master's program to figure out your next steps. Good luck!

My reply is kinda late, but I’m in the same boat (my undergrad was in theatre lol). But I’ve researched some schools like LIU that have a B.S./M.S. dual program. NYU also has a masters program where prerequisites are not required. But yeah, most schools prefer having the prerequisites. Hope this is helpful to some 🙂

Thanks! I appreciate the tips. I’m an Rdtobe. I have a masters degree already in public administration so I was advised to just take the required nutrition classes, do a one year unpaid internship, and take the RD exam. I work full time now and am doing the classes part time at night. It’s gonna be a long road for me but I enjoy the journey. I’ll have 12 of 80 units done after this spring. Next up are the chem classes in the fall. Hoping I like them. Thanks for sharing your story!
