Just so you know, this clown thinks that guitar “skill” lives in impressive sounding stupid hammer ons, pull offs, harmonics, tapping, playing the guitar like a drum, and other snazzy looking bullshit that clouds the fact that real skill lives in songwriting, the right hand, feel, and being able to actively noodle with chords and scales (used appropriately) to make the guitar talk and tell a story. I’m sick of guitar you tubers who think they are so god tier at guitar because they know how to play some fucking radio songs with their $4000 guitar and of course every one in the comments just bows down at their knees and says “oh my god that was amazing😭” or “i officially give up playing guitar”. Sorry for rambling but please stop thinking this dude is some Eric Clapton or Tommy Emanuel.
@@ConnorJMC41 umm yeah sure he aint a guitar god but he's good you gotta admit that, and those hammer ons and pull offs and using the guitar as drums adds dimension to the playing.
@@ConnorJMC41 “Every guitar youtuber is full of themselves for playing and recording it” - Connor J. @@ok-tb8ve I'm a beginner too, I know it's hard at the first but keep doing it you'll get it. The first time I sucked at D chord and I kept practicing for 'bout 2 hours and uff I finally got it
@@_Kobold_ that was a reference to the original joke (copyright strikes -> calendar strikes = haha) yeah i got -2 in attention, @kevin pereira also mentioned that before my comment 😢 also, i actually know Swedish better than German so SKAMMEN
I started to play on my guitar when I was 7 years old, now I'm close to the 70's and the only thing I've got out of my guitar playing is ... I own a guitar that's over 60 years old. 😁😜
@@Neptunia_snowy Yep ... and it looks like a guitar of over 100. It's really ugly and it's also dried in and twisted. I have only kept it to remind myself that abilities do not grow into heaven for everyone. (I think sometimes I can do everything with my hands)
That's so funny, it's amazing how things can just come and go and you just have a bunch of instruments sitting around or anything else you thought you needed. I wish you a happy life, stay safe :)
Umm... when I was 11 years old I already progressed alot with the guitar because of hardwork. I'm Asian, but if you're lazy nothing will happen with you...
@@Ash808s I got the joke. It's just that I'm tired of seeing people type these kind of comments. Especially the "Roses are red, violets are blue. There will always be an Asian, better than you."
2:38 Damn I couldn't even play open chords right when I was 2 years into guitar playing and this guy is doing all sort of tapping crazy shit Great job here!
Practicing six to seven hours a day consistently is what really did it for him. The guitar is about consistency not so much how many years you've put into it.
Mattias Krantz: "I did no longer rely on RU-vid tutorials. I started to rewind performances in 0,5X speed so I could copy every hand movement." Me: Screw guitar classes, lets go on RU-vid.
Let people say whatever they want. But sir, (yes, sir) this is pure motivation. I may not be able to practice 6-7 hours a day but I surely will practice more effectively than before. It just hit me like a damn train that im playing for about 800 hours and yet I'm I'm not anywhere near your 800 hours, let alone where you stand today. I will remember your words, ‘You just need to practice abit more than advanced players.’ I will watch this video whenever I need that extra boost. You just became a hero without a cape. Love from Bangladesh.
I’ve been playing about the same time and I’m only at his 800hr range. Like him, lost motivation and kinda stopped playing as much as I used to. No bueno, it’s really calming.
@KRAK3N he said he got his first guitar at 14 but didn't play much. He looks what 18 ish at the 30 hour practice mark. So he practiced for 30 over the course of 4 years? I'm dubious myself lol
This is amazing to see and you have become an unbelievably great guitar player over the past 7 years! For myself, I've wanted to pick up the guitar ever since I was 14 but every time I tried I got unmotivated from the lack of skill, impatience, and finger pain. However, last summer I tried a ukulele at a friend's summer house, learned a simple song with barely any struggle (ofc it didn't sound good but I had a lot of fun with it), and I bought myself a ukulele the moment I got home. Recently I tried to play guitar in our school's music classroom and picked up 5 basic chords right away. It was a lot more fun thanks to my experience with the ukulele which had helped me develop the skills to change chords, apply strumming patterns, and feel no finger pain. This video was a huge motivational push and although I love my ukulele, I can't wait to expand to the guitar as soon as possible and start learning that more as well!
For EVERYBODY saying 30hours is a short amount of time to have learnt something like this, keep in mind its total hours. It does not mean he sat for a day practicing, rather he practiced and “perfected” easy concepts Through likely 2-3h a day of practice, for what i estímate is two weeks. Its not the same playing 30h straight in one sitting rather than practicing for two weeks now is it?
at first d chord was hard for me, then I looked the efficient way to put my fingers together. Nailed it. But switching between chords isn't that easy for me
For me is still a bitch to switch to B so what i do is i practice playing Alicia Keys fallin cause its just two chords its E and B only so after doing that im able to switch better to that chord then i started playing 4 non blondes whats up which also has the B and now i feel i switch easier to it and it sounds cleaner than before, also i think many P!nk songs have the B chord in them to practice to it.
Im at around 30-40 hours and I can play stairway to heaven, tears in heaven , blackbird, shape of my heart (the beginning), fast car, careless whisper, among others... it’s not impossible, but all about the lev of effort you put in while practicing.
@@andreasbjrndal3083 I don’t know how many hours I’m in but I bought a guitar 7 days ago and I can play come as you are, the first couple minutes of enter sandman, crazy train intro riff, seven nation army, killin in the name of, and Dammit. No natural talent for me I’ve just figured out the best ways to learn new hobbies quickly and efficiently.
its so great to see how you've kept record of your progress and its made to show how organic passions manifest in us, and it makes me relate so heavily to both my guitar playing and other passions so thank you so much for making this video!
Ive got almost 7000 hours in at watching youtube and I have to say I'm not any better at it than I was at hour one :( But I can type comments a little faster. Woohoo
People are forgetting that in the beginning, 30 hours to him was 2 months (practicing 30 minutes each day = 60 days) so he wasn’t just “so good at the beginning”
That would still be VERY shocking given my experience. Not trying to say it would be impossible, but in the few hundred students I've taught over the last decade I've never seen someones muscle memory in regards to jumping directly to a chord with all three/four fingers develop in that short of a time. For the first 1-100 practice hours (over 3-5 months), generally speaking, your fingers still work individually and not as an entire unit. As muscle memory develops, your fingers all start to move together in a single grouped motion to match the shape of the chord rather than find their way to specific, individual frets. Again, it's not like I know whether or not it's impossible for someone to manage that in such a short time; I only have my own experience to go by. But I've never seen anyone even come close from absolute no experience to 30-hours practice resulting in adequate chord transitions, and I have had students who practiced 2-3 hours constantly at the start who are incredible today. So I fully understand why people would find it a bit unbelievable. Still, fun video and fun progress time lapse. Nothing wrong with that.
With a guy that is literally a guitar genius, that is very likely 30hrs. He obviously is gifted. Didn't mean you might get there in 30, but you may in 60 it whatever it takes.
2 months is the very beginning!! I guess for a child that sounds like a long time, but for grown ups that's nothing. That's how long it took for my bed to arrive after I ordered it.
Yeah that +he is really talented. Had this one guy at the music camp, he started playing 9 months ago and was so much better then the rest of us. I think i played for 3 or 4 years at the time. The following year he came back, but guitar became boring - so he played the piano for a week with no prior experience and outperformed other kids playing 3 4 years. It was incredible!
I knew I shouldn't have clicked on this video, I didn't want to, but I did, and now all my musical achievements have been overrun by some dude who could play well at 30 hours.
Do not be discouraged this guy is talking crap, keep playing mate. Even if he is telling the truth he achievement has not bearing on your as person or player.
I enjoyed very much seeing this progress. Proof that with patience and consistent practice you can become very good at any new talent/skill. Thank you for sharing
Have to agree. That was not 30 hours from first picking up a guitar. No way you play a passable “Sweet Home Alabama” after 30 hours, and have multiple chords that you hit with ease and can pick the right strings...unless you’re a genius which he might be...
Man that's awesome. I think this is the first "progression" videos I've seen someone make for the guitar. (I'm sure there are plenty others out there) The fact that you kept track of and recorded your progress over that period of time for everyone to see is great. Whether you know it or not it's videos like these that can motivate people to stick with guitar or any other instrument even if they get frustrated and lose confidence in themselves.
I'm 24 years, and you motive me to learn again. I practiced a few years ago, but I want to do it again. I don't remember anything. Thanks for the inspiration!
Same. Saw this old guitar in my brothers room he left here after moving out nd was like sure fuck it ill give it a go. And i dont have a clue where id be now if it weren't for doing that
Why? Because of the ammount of hours it took? If you play video games and check how many total hours you've sunk into them, then you'll understand that it really isn't that many hours. More so, playing guitar requires a lot more set of skills than playing video games. I love video games dont get me wrong but i'd rather be doing something that can improve myself and that I can perform to wider spectrum of audience.
@@RenTheGreat Ever heared of e-sports? Aside from that I know this takes skill but not necessarily more than a video game. Sure it's more impozing to play an instrument but don't assume it takes more skill to play a hard piece than being the first worldwide in a game. :D
@@szabolcsdemeter1536 I do know about esports. But even though it's a fairly large industry it's nowhere near as large as the music industry. esports tailors to a niche group of people. The majority of gamers dont even watch esports. Most people however from a wide variety of backgrounds would enjoy a concert put on by a skilled guitar player.
You my guy are very talented. Most people who learn guitar can only play others peoples music, but you went and made your very own song. I applaud you for that.
You have inspired me to be better. You have definitely progressed to the level of a legend. Please consider releasing an acoustic guitar album. You're awesome man
Really many thanks for that lesson. Im 58 years old and I started to play the guitar when I was 14. During I was playing guitar but only few times every month ... not much...Two years ago I had a heart attack and I still alive so I decided to play the guitar again and Im really enjoying now. You teach me that never is to late and that you dont must be the best one ...just enjoyed.... Thank you very much again !
To all those wondering how he improved so quickly, concerted and focused practice is not the same as simply playing. 7000 hours of focused practice you'll have this skill. If 10,000 hours of focused practice is what it takes to master something, then 7,000 hours is close to mastery. How to practice: 1. Keep track of your mistakes and weaknesses 2. Select a mistake or weakness you'd like to improve 3. Set a timer for a reasonable duration (30 minutes for example) where you can stay focused for the entire duration. 4. RU-vid some exercises of how to improve this weakness, or make your own 5. For 30 minutes (or the time you selected) play these exercises deliberately perfectly (meaning play so slowly that you do NOT make a mistake. If you make a mistake, start the exercise over and slow down so that you execute without a mistake) 6. Take a short break 7. Repeat at step 2 for another 30 minutes 7000 hours of that and you'll be at his skill level, guaranteed. "Playing" is not practice. Practice is practice. Now go practice.
Very good point, and that's what I like to call deliberate practice. Don't just keep doing the same thing over and over, find out what you are doing wrong and make adjustments and focus on that ONE area. You can go out and mindlessly put in the effort and bust your ass at something, but if you are not practicing with focused attention to detail with a specific goal of improving your performance, then you are just wasting all your time and energy for nothing. Like you said, research, deliberate practice, and amount of hours is the key to mastering something. I wish someone told me this concept at a early age.
@@denisde849 Where do you find practice stuff? You are LITERALLY living in an era where you can learn and find ANYTHING on the Internet. Enhance your research skills, you are sitting on a gold mine.
Take heart guys and gals if you're scratching your head at this guys development and thinking about chucking it in. I've been playing guitar since I was 13 and am now 60 and I want you to know that this young man learned at an extremely accelerated pace. (I am VERY impressed!) Most new students will take at least a year to attain the abilities he shows by around 30 hours. Some people in fact take much longer, depending on how motivated they are and some folks never progress beyond that point which is perfectly fine if you are content being able to sing along to your own basic though perfectly competent guitar skills. If you do want to continue to advance there is plenty of information online to help you do just that but be patient and understand that we all progress at our own speed and we all have different things to say on the instrument. It's not a race it's a means of expression and a wonderful hobby if you decide to stay with it. Have fun!
4:25 Thank you so much for this advice. In 3 days, I'll have played the guitar for 5 months. The first two months went pretty well, with me learning how to change between chords at a mediocre pace, but months 3 and 4 my progress stalled, because I didn't try anything more than basic 3 chord strumming songs. Then I saw your advice and I started playing When You Love Someone by James TW and even though it took me like 3 weeks, I'm extremely proud I got the verse down. I couldn't have done it without you
I hope you liked this video. I’m not used to edit something this long, so there’s probably a bunch of mistakes. I had to learn Final Cut pro from scratch (moved from Sony Vegas). All videos in this video is from my youtube channel so you can find all videos there if you want too:)
pink Fungi I still have a free trial on final cut so it’s not too late to change! Why do you think premiere is a better alternative? I’ve messed around with it on my windows a while ago and it looks pretty similar to final cut

I love watching a person truly master a passion. The simple yet wonderful beginnings where its function over form. Watching the ever slow evolution in stages. It's like a tide ebbing and flowing. The end result isn't him playing the guitar, but the guitar playing him through every movement and embellishment. We are amazing creatures. I love it. X

Here's my progression Stage 1: Smoke on the Water, Enter Sandman, Satisfaction, Nothing Else Matters, etc. Stage 2: the four basic open chords G, D, Em, and C Stage 3: power chords and putting the power chords together with the four chords Stage 4: the rest of the open chords like A, E, Am, and Dm Stage 5: learning the CAGED system and how to switch between all the major and minor chord shapes. And that's basically how you get to be a rhythm guitar player.
u can play every day for 30 days an hour or two a day or you can play 8 hours in 4 days, guess which one will be better ? practice your skill and if you do it every single day, i swear to you on the 700th day you will be better
I just picked up my first ever guitar yesterday, pretty cheap one but I thought "Hey, sounds like something interesting to do". And honestly, I've done maybe two-three hours of just watching lessons and little practices. I know I just started, but it feels impossible to see me getting any better, just because of how slow and how long it takes to start off, however, I absolutely love playing it already! But after watching this video, this inspired me! Thank you, man, If I ever feel down or at a block, I will just watch this and see how you have improved and overcome those blockages.
Hey bro, i got my guitar delivered yesterday and im practicing it every single free moment that i get, i know how you feel cuz i feel the same way you do, we cant give up now no matter what or we will be losers and losers dont win anything in life, you get me? Pce
You’ll be fine. In half a year you’ll be at a whole new level of play, in the beginning things progress a lot faster than you might expect. Just try to practice everyday ;)
It took me years before tackling the monster known as Wonderwall, I had to be pushed into it by a friend, I spent hours, dreading each second, the pain of my fingers getting to the correct speed. Through The Fire and Flames, Classical Gas, and Gran Vals were nothing in comparison to this beast. I barely managed to make it through the first section, and I can only play it for five seconds before getting tendonitis in my left forearm from its demanding technique.
Mattias... i wanted to thank u for motivating me about my progress... well... after learning chords... i started to learn your "ambition" song.... so i decided to push myself through the limits and play advanced... and it worked... so... tysm!
I relate to him so much! I got my classic guitar at grade 5 and got private lesson for about two years but stopped. I started again with classic guitar at grade 9 for a year but stopped again. Later in beginning of grade 12 I started again with acoustic guitar and learned really fast from practicing every night for almost 2 hrs (with a lot of blisters and blood :( ). Currently I am almost done with first semester of grade 12 and I can master almost every middle level guitar music piece in maximum of 2 weeks or less (hard work pays off). I have been stressing so much with SAT and college application but guitar helped me get through those stress and anxieties! Playing guitar just makes me happy and makes me feel proud of myself! To all reading this, don't give up because it's hard but try your best!!! at the end you will feel like you have done something amazing!
That's not a skill you reach in 30 hours. He obviously is a returning guitar player. But there are indeed some roadblocks which need to be surpassed. Some get over them slower and others faster. Even if you have short fingers, or fat fingers or whatever. You'll get over them if you practice enough. After that I can guarantee that you'll start to see noticeable improvements and enjoy playing even more. You DO NOT waste money and you DO NOT need to find another hobby if you love playing. WTF is wrong with you people throwing shit like that? Do you even know what a hobby is? You don't need to be Francisco Tarrega or Andres Segovia to enjoy playing the guitar. You don't need to prove anyone that you're better than them. It's about being you with the music you like.
Mathias, I commend you on your perseverance to learn to play guitar . Just found your channel and enjoying your music. God bless you in your future music endeavors. Best wishes to you from Kenner Louisiana
I always lost my pick in the soundhole. After 30 hours of turning my guitar upside down to shake it out, I did 2 things. One, I bought a Tacoma Roadking with an offset sound hole and then I quit using a pick on an acoustic. That said, I have recently learned Lola and use a pick on it. I read these comments and can say that anyone learning guitar today has it way easier than an old fart like me. You Tube has made it very easy to learn. Some good teachers on here for sure. I'll keep their names to myself.
@Ned Kelly What? If u tube isn't helping you to play better u may as well quit now. And as for picks, they are a matter of preference. Old blues players never used picks.
