My Actuarial Science Career - How I Made It.

The qualification process There are two main designations that you can go for to be called an actuary: - Fellow Actuary (FASSA) - this is the specialist qualification, eg you are a certified life insurance or general insurance specialist actuary. For this, you need to have passed all actuarial exams, including the two specialist principles and the final specialist applications exam in any practice area of your choice, and of course signed off on the work-based learning (WBL) and other normative skills and administrative processes. - Associate Actuary (AMASSA) - this is a generalist designation, ie you are a certified general actuary. For this, you need to have passed all A-level (core technical) exams, communications and the actuarial risk management exam, and again, signed off the WBL and part of the admin and normative skills process. Both of these give you the title of actuary. Unfortunately, we are so used to the full specialist route (FASSA) that the associate (AMASSA) designation is often not even brought up in conversation. As a result, in most cases when we talk of an actuary, we are thinking of a specialist, whereas there is also an option to become a generalist if you’d like.
