Very important, an issues that I did not address fully in the conversation. The qualification process There are two main designations that you can go for to be called an actuary: - Fellow Actuary (FASSA) - this is the specialist qualification, eg you are a certified life insurance or general insurance specialist actuary. For this, you need to have passed all actuarial exams, including the two specialist principles and the final specialist applications exam in any practice area of your choice, and of course signed off on the work-based learning (WBL) and other normative skills and administrative processes. - Associate Actuary (AMASSA) - this is a generalist designation, ie you are a certified general actuary. For this, you need to have passed all A-level (core technical) exams, communications and the actuarial risk management exam, and again, signed off the WBL and part of the admin and normative skills process. Both of these give you the title of actuary. Unfortunately, we are so used to the full specialist route (FASSA) that the associate (AMASSA) designation is often not even brought up in conversation. As a result, in most cases when we talk of an actuary, we are thinking of a specialist, whereas there is also an option to become a generalist if you’d like.

So the Associate actuary is the better route?

Please expand on exemptions from the Hons Finacial Math route compared to straight Bsc Acturial Sci.

Did you find Actuarial studies easier when you're in a consulting Actuarial role or when you were in a traditional Actuarial role in terms of time and work-study-life balance?
@mathulemalerotho8348
@mathulemalerotho8348 Год назад
That’s a really interesting question because I think there were other important factors for me, in that I was in traditional and consulting roles at very different points in my career. Traditional early on, consulting a bit later when I was more experienced. But generally, consulting gives you access to a wide range of areas to work on and really forces you to be knowledgeable in what you do which is a huge positive for the later exams. On the other hand, traditional roles are usually less stressful, especially in areas outside valuations. From a life insurance pov, valuations has a very deadline-based structure and so even outside consulting, will probably add a lot more pressure than product development and pricing. So for me personally, I wouldn’t say there’s been much of a difference from a balance point of view.

Thank you for an informative interview💯🙌, Can I please ask that does it matter which university you did your Actuarial Science degree like does university act as advantage??
@mathulemalerotho8348
@mathulemalerotho8348 Год назад
I don’t think that matters at all for actuarial roles. What matters is how close you get to qualifying. So whichever universities you’re in, if you can get those exemptions, you are in a good position.

But definitely find out how the different universities operate and choose one that you feel would be a good environment for you to thrive.

I chose Wits over UCT for actuarial science because I wasn't willing to study for the next 5 years. Wits is only 4 years. No regrets.

Hi Thuli. I actually did actuarial science in my first year but then changed to mathematical sciences. Mathule was my classmate in first year.

@@benmahudu7431 Permit me to ask, why did you change actuarial sciences? I am considering studying it at NWU, any insight would be much appreciated.
