After I returned from annual back in June, I found that they Mooney seemed to spring a bit of an oil leak. Our first guess was the recently replaced crankshaft seal. This morning I flew the Mooney over to T&J Aviation in Hastings Michigan to see what we could find.
It was a beautiful morning for the quick trip across Grand Rapids. Come along for the ride, and the quick dive into the crazy world of aviation engine oil leaks!!!

I feel your pain. I’ve chased minor oil leaks on my M20C for years. Good shape now, but had jugs tightened, lines replaced, oil cooler replaced and on.

It’s a good feeling with that leak goes away...well worth the frustration!!!

Thanks man! It does have a few baffling leaks that need to be addressed, but it is in pretty good shape. What do you fly?

After annual, my shop put 8qt of oil in my 1963 M20C. Pretty much leaked out 2qts over 15hr. Now it stays around 6qt even. If I fly a long cross country I add about 1/4. Runs great right at that level. I still believe I have a small leak on the back two oil pan bolts. I'm getting ready to do an oil change so I hope to discover where its coming from. Its so tight in there, I will probably need to run my flexible bore scope camera with light to get back there. Keep the videos coming. Really enjoy them.

Thanks a bunch, it’s never fun chasing those darn leaks! I hear you on the overfilling, 8 quarts = disaster!

My brother! Missed the premier due to classes, but made sure to catch up after homework! Tools show up Friday, I am beyond excited!! Quick question, what audio cable do you use for the go-pro? I start my PPL this weekend, and would love to capture my flights! Thanks for everything, I consider you a true friend and a brother in aviation. Keep the awesome videos coming! Keeps me motivated to get through school so I can afford my own Mooney. Again, I appreciate everything Edit: one more question, what headset are you using? Opinion on it? Thanks!!
@MyTimeToFly
@MyTimeToFly 3 года назад
Right on man, thanks for watching and I can’t wait for those tools to hit your doorstep. The audio cables I use are from Nflightcam. Which one specifically you need will depend on the camera you are using. As far as a headset, I’m a David Clark guy. I have a pair of DC One X’s that I love. But you can’t go wrong with any of the next ANR headsets. Thanks again for being here my friend!

@@MyTimeToFly thank you so much! I will take a look and see what cable I need. I thought that’s what the headset was, but wanted to make sure. Hope they got that leak fixed for ya! Those prop seals can be a @%#$&!!! Thank you for a quick response as always. Stay safe!

I recently had my prop balanced, resulting in a noticeable reduction in vibration at 2300. According to the A&P that helped me, anytime the prop is removed it should be re-balanced.
@MyTimeToFly
@MyTimeToFly 3 года назад
That sounds like something I would love to do. How do they actually balance it? Remove small amounts of material from each blade as necessary?
@pauldirschka7052
@pauldirschka7052 3 года назад
@@MyTimeToFly In my case, after attaching a couple of sensors (one for vibration, one for prop position) and an initial run followed by a a run with weight suggested by the test equipment, the final weight was attached to the inner side of the hub that the spinner is attached to.
@MyTimeToFly
@MyTimeToFly 3 года назад
Oh cool, not too different from a tire balance.

When it comes to older aircraft there is always something that needs attending too, hopefully it's nothing too serious and costly. Thanks

Nice landing, Cory!! Hope you solved the leak! Did you happen to use corrosion X on your cowling, by any chance?
@MyTimeToFly
@MyTimeToFly 3 года назад
Thanks Daniel. I did not use any corrosion products. Are you asking as they have a tendency to weep and would appear like oil leaks?
@danielruff4632

@@MyTimeToFly Yes, it happened to me. Was a relief to figure out it wasn’t oil.
@MyTimeToFly

Makes sense, thanks for sharing. The good news is, on my most recent flight there was less oil.

how did you split screen the documents tab in foreflight on top, with the map on the bottom?

I’m actually using FlyQ rather that Foreflight. It’s standard functionality in FlyQ.
