Allan was the sweetest guy… Met him a few times…Shared drinks and food with him. He will go down as the John Coltrane of guitar and as time goes on I truly believe he’ll be more and more appreciated for how great he was. Thank you so much for sharing, you sound amazing.

The John Coltrane of guitar. Never thought of him that way, but having seen it put that way, the description fits perfectly. As with Coltrane, his contribution is massive and will change the way we think of his chosen instrument. Very few people like him. It's a blessing they exist.

Definitely a Coltrane of the guitar, as Allan was known to be a frustrated saxophonist, as that's the instrument he wanted to play when he was a youngster.

Allan personifies love to me.. He flew me across the country twice to audition with him.. The first time was just moments before Chad walked in the studio and the second time just after Vinnie became available.. Playing drums with Allan was an incredible experience as well as meeting and playing with Jeff and later Jimmy.. However it was the man himself that I carried back east with me.. Deep in my heart I knew I had touched something precious that to this day brings a joy unequaled in my lifetime.. Even as I write with shaking hands there is an inner knowing that I touched heaven and that what I came away with far exceeds anything to do with drumming or music.. I know you know exactly of what I speak.. Thank you for sharing this and reminding me that there is goodness beyond measure in this crazy realm.. Peace

If i may add my own Allan story to the mix; I'd seen Allan live a half dozen times in the last 40 years of his career. Starting in 1976, with the New Tony Williams Lifetime . Then, in Germany a few times. One show in particular stood out...i think 1986. Touring with Stanley Clarke, they played in Nuremberg, at the SportsPlatz where the infamous rally was held. The stage was in an old bombed out Nazi bunker that happened to have great acoustics, with the roof blown off... I know...insane. There were maybe 50 people in the crowd, and watching Stanley and Allan duel with each other .. well, the crowd was electrified. I had perfected this Tarzan yell, and let it out during the applause. The band got a kick out of it. They were staying at a hotel near my office, so a group of friends drank and dined with them all night long. More than 10 years later, i saw Allan for the last time, and he remembered the whole thing. Such a sweet and humble man. You could discuss anything with him. I cried when learning of his passing....

Allan is “the one” if you ask me. In 50 years he will be recognized as such. I saw your performance of letters of marque and your bass solo was incredible. Even Allan seemed intrigued. I usually dread bass solos, except yours and Jaco obviously. Your tone is also spot on, I can’t stand too much treble or a slap type sound.

In 2008 when I was 18 I was lucky enough to stumble into Allan Holdsworth at NAMM. I had no idea who he was at the time, but he was one of the kindest people I've met. It was a spiritual experience. RIP to Mr. Holdsworth!

The first time I ever heard Alan play was on UK's 1st album. I was overwhelmed by his guitar playing. Just brilliant. Never heard anything like it before or since. Sure there's been imitators. There always is brilliant and original musicians but he surely was one of a kind that the Gods surely gifted. Well of course everytime he would be performing in the NYC area my long time friend and I would go to several shows and we would try to sit by his side of the stage. Our jaws would always be dropping with every solo he would perform. My friend and I were very lucky to met him several times and get pictures with him and his autograph. We were looking forward to his next album and tour when he suddenly past away. What a great loss to music and his devoted fans like me. It will never be the same for us without him. May he rest in piece and I still silently thank him for sharing his extraordinary gifts with us.

First time I listened to Allan Holdsworth was in 2018, shortly after starting college. I began studying and listened to The Sixteen Men Of Tain and instantly became a fan. In part, that album pushed me to explore more jazz fusion/progressive genres and I'm thankful for that. Sadly, I won't ever be able to see him perform but his music will carry on in his absence.

I’ve had more than a handful of encounters with Allan, and I can testify that he was always a kind gentleman, with a disarming, wry, self-effacing sense of humor. It saddens me he’s not with us any longer, but he left us such a treasure of his art. Yes, he was an amazing musician, but he was just a regular guy with all of the baggage any of us have to deal with. Never forget we all stub our toes, or get our hearts broken and make mistakes or have bad days.

Wow, what a heartfelt story. Thank you for sharing something so personal to you. I admit, it's hard to believe that someone with your extreme talent was having doubts and actually quit playing. I did the same. Stopped playing because I was not happy with the music business and trying to get a good gig was difficult. My friend met Allan after a show in the parking lot one night. My friend went over to congratulate him on a great show. But, Allan was very upset and actually crying about how badly he played that night. My friend was shocked that Allan was that upset with himself. Just goes to show that we never know what's happening inside folks sometimes. Evan, you are one of the very best electric bassists we have on this here planet. Your musicianship is superior and most of all a very down to earth and kind person.

Thank you so much for sharing your time with Allan. I love the man and his music. His inspiration is always with me. I started playing at age 19, way back when playing by ear and improvising was the way to go. Like most I did Rock covers in and out of many bands. But when I heard Allan all that changed. It inspired me to go in many directions, that have helped me find my own voice. I am now 69. Like you I am in burn out mode. Which stared when I lost the hearing in my left ear because of Meniere's disease. I have found, for me that most self-doubt is in comparing ones-self to others.

Damn bro…I remember when I saw you with Allan. I was shocked but to me it made sense. Where you were before that gig I’m at right now. Frustrated. And I stopped for well over three years and now am just getting the fire back to keep pushing. Now I’m just playing to simply get better and more expressive and if this goes in another direction I just can think about. Ultimately I play because it’s my language. Plus…as a drummer I think Allan has had the biggest influence on me more that any drummer. And that’s just real.

Gr8 video and story Evan. my introduction to A.H. was in 1985 with metal fatigue. I'd been playing since I was 14 in 1976, and the album blew me away, took me in a whole new direction for a few more years to about 1992 when I was 30. I decided that the musicians life wasn't happening for me, and I'd already been in high tech since 1977 so I sold all of my equipment for pennies on the dollar and rededicated myself to me alternate (but very profitable) tech career. its only been over the last few years that I've rediscovered my old passions and noodle away the evenings more and more. everyone's directions and roads in life are different, and time is often the director our fates.

I remember walking out of the venue that night in awe of the performance from you all. Little did I know it would be one of Allen's last performances. You continue to inspire me with the music that you release. Looking forward to hearing more from you and Dana or whoever else you decide to work with. If anyone is interested in watch the entire performance, here it is ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LKiq1e40CIM.html

One of the best gigs I went to was Allan at Ronnie Scott's with the late great Dave Carpenter on bass. Stonking night.
